Should i get a backup drive

So i dont know if i need a backup usb drive, they are kinda big and i dont want to clutter my setup.

I also dont know if it would be that bad if i lot eveything, i save most my school stuff to the cloud and i everything else is mostly games and apps i can download again.

I ask because soon i will be adding a ssd to my rig and i dont know if i should backup everything when i do the transfer of if i would be fine just transferring the os

If you are sure that there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING saved on the computer that you need, then I guess you'd be fine.  But I would never be comfortable saying that there is nothing on the computer that I need.  The one thing that everybody that has lost data has in common is that they did not expect it.

Desktop: Intel Core i7-6700K, ASUS Z170-A, ASUS STRIX GTX 1080 Ti, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512 GB Samsund 840 Pro, Seasonic X series 650W PSU, Fractal Design Define R4, 2x5TB HDD

And would a dedicated backup drive be better than a hdd with a usb adapter

I would recommend getting one.  Any HDD will be fine, whether it is a regular internal HDD with an adapter or a dedicated external one.
