Need guide MHL cable

ok i bought a monitor asus vx239h which included the MHL for the function. the packaging give me the MHL cable.

i tried to connect the MHL cable to my phone and change the port (HDMI1) at the menu but nothing goes out. what i suppose to do? do i need to get MHL adapter ?

my phone is samsung s3

from what I understand the Samsung devices need a 11 to 5 pin adaptor there also might be some need for an older phone like this too have a powered connection although that I'm not 100% sure on 

 

hope this helps although I'm not sure it will still be relevant
