Hi there.

I want to know if i should go i7 or e3. The e3 is a bit less expensive and to my understanding runs cooler and is more geared to server operations. I will be setting up a normal desktop type pc as a demo server for clients. so far I only have the motherboard (MSI z87-g45 gaming) that i got as free gift from MSI. I also understand that I need a graphics card as some of xeon CPU's don't have integrated graphics. i have an old 8600GTs lying around and it still works fine.

So will it be better to get xeon and add dedicated gpu or pay more and get i7 and use integrated graphics also that will give me one less point of failure.

whats is the system being used for? theres no point in getting either of them if your getting a z87 motherboard and a xeon because you cant OC and no point going for the refresh because it sucks and you cant OC it. if its just for gaming stick with the i5 4670k or for workstation uses a i7 4770k .

Remember it's only the 4790 not the K cpu. Won't overclock as I wan't to have this cpu for as long as it can.  As I said it will be used as a demo server for clients and the e3 cpu is just a little bit more than a normal i5-4690.

Also the 4770K is a lot more expensive than the 4790.

i already have the motherboard and cpu cooler (thermalright silver arrow) I'm planning on installing it and using the cooler without fans at first to see what the temps would be like.
