Hey everyone,

I’m planning a new build and could really use some feedback. Here’s my current parts list:
https://geizhals.de/wishlists/4619185

Firstly, I know I’m spending a lot of money here, and I realize some people might see this as overkill or even a waste. That’s really not my intention, I just want to get this right for my own preference / case. I’m not trying to flex or upset anyone. I’d honestly appreciate constructive feedback and help to make the best choices.

Goal: A quiet and clean-looking PC for 4K gaming and streaming. RGB doesn’t matter to me; I’m fine with it or without it.
Overclocking: Plan is to run PBO with some OC tuning and EXPO enabled. Might try some RAM OC later on (never done it before).

GPU
Is the MSI Suprim SOC worth it, or should I spend a bit more for the ASUS ROG Strix Astral, especially because of the Pin Sense? I’m set on GPU air cooling.

Motherboard
I’d like support for 3x NVMe without lane sharing or dropping PCIe to x8 (2x would be acceptable if needed). PCIe 4.0 is enough, but I want solid USB options (at least USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C (20GBPS), ideally USB4). That’s why I’ve been looking at X870E boards and for better voltage handling / enough VRM phases for stable GPU/CPU

Some thoughts:

  • I actually like the Nova board, but I’ve read about stability issues with ASRock on 9000-series CPUs, so I’d prefer to avoid them.

  • The MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk WiFi looks solid, but I’ve seen people mention BIOS issues.

  • Gigabyte supposedly has weird bugs (like crashes when typing a non-existing search entry in BIOS?).

  • That kind of leaves ASUS as the “safe” choice.

One thing that confused me: I found some TechPowerUp reviews where motherboards showed FPS differences in games of up to 10% (example). I always thought boards don’t affect gaming performance, is this legit? How does this come?

Which board can you recommend?

RAM
I’d like to try DDR5-6400, even though I know 6000 is the “sweet spot” for AM5. I’ve been eyeing the Kingston Fury Beast 64GB kit, DDR5-6400 CL32 (2Rx8). Would this be realistic to run with EXPO on a 9000 CPU, or am I asking for trouble?

PSU
I think 1200W makes sense, that way the PSU won’t constantly run near its upper limit (which can sometimes cause coil whine or other noises). It also gives me enough headroom for USB devices and peripherals that I keep connected or charged via the PC.

Case Fans
I really don’t want anything that hums like the Arctic P12/P14. I’m looking for something as quiet as possible with a pleasant sound profile. I’ve heard good things about NB eLoop  (based on igorslab) (maybe the argb version, if it will be a fishtank case), but I’m also considering Noctua A14x25 G2, be quiet! Light Wings 140 HS, or Silent Wings Pro 4. I’ll need nine fans in total (three on the AIO radiator).

Which would you suggest?

AIO
Thinking of the Arctic Liquid Freezer III 420. Should fit in my case choice, and I value performance and quiet operation over flashy looks. Planning to run it in a pull setup. I know that an air cooler would be enough, I just want a big AIO 🙂 Any reason to reconsider?

Case
I went for “fish tank” style cases because they often have cooling in favor for GPU and they’re not too tall. I only have limited clearance under my desk (for example, the Antec Flux Pro would already be 5cm too high). The NZXT H9 Flow (2025) looks great because it seems to have excellent GPU airflow (bottom-mounted fans) and support for a 420 AIO at the top. Would love something that feels somewhat "premium".

Build quality is important to me too, has anyone tried the H9 Flow 2025 in person yet? GamersNexus hasn’t reviewed it, so I’m not sure.

Alternatively, I’ve considered the Lian Li O11 Dynamic / O11D Evo RGB. I’m also open to other suggestions, as long as airflow and build quality are good.

Any advice or input is greatly appreciated!

What does this mean?

  • Gigabyte supposedly has weird bugs (like crashes when typing a non-existing search entry in BIOS?).

I have never in my 35+ years of building machines ever typed a search for anything in a BIOS.  Can you even do that?

Gigabyte boards are solid with excellent power delivery, at least the AORUS Elite and Pro line do.

The rest of it... I'm no fan of the 5090, nor Pro drives for gaming, nor pushing RAM to the IF limit.

But as an overkill balls out PC... you picked the right parts.  Should all work well, though some of your reasoning is a bit too much of "reading something somewhere" but I get it if you haven't built or used parts much.  No other option to read or ask, so makes sense.

Can't get much better than what you posted for gaming.

Most of the time I read the things I've posted about at igorslab, techpowerup and some german review sites (and hearsay reddit obviously) 🙂

This is mainly the case for all the mainboard stuff. For the other parts I relied on different benchmarks.

Do you mind explaining this to me? 🙂

Can you perhaps recommend a MB which fits the points/conditions I stated above?
What do you think about CASE/Fans/AIO/PSU and the Custom model of the 5090?

Basically if you try 6400 RAM, and since the IF ratio is at 6400... you may or may not get it to run in Gear 1 vs Gear 2.

Good conversation about it:

I like the case, will work with an AIO well.  Fishtanks are better with water than air due to their design.

I think the AIO is a bit much, I'd dial back to 360mm.  Not much benefit to go to 420mm, and fit is easier.  That 9800X3D doesn't need that much cooling, so whatever you get is more for you than the CPU 🙂

1200w PSU is good for a 5090, and I don't really know the benefits of the Astral to say if it's worth it or not.  For gaming, I would go with the one you like since money isn't an issue.  The price difference when compared to the entire build cost is negligible.

Got you, maybe reconsidering to 360mm, but I would just LOVE to have a 420 😄

I really hope that it fits into the H9 Flow 2025 model! There are some sources online that say it fits, others say it doesn't.

Regarding the RAM, after reading the post, I think I'll just go with 6000 so I dont have any struggle.

Is there an AIO that is nearly as good as the AF iii 420 but a bit thinner? (And usable without software...) So I would maybe be on a more safe site that it will fit in the case.

Is there still a MB which you can recommend? :)

Do you know wether the asrock 9000 CPU melting problems still exists? After reading this it scared the sht out of me, because I was really set at the Asrock NOVA Board and now it seems I need to go with Asus, maybe the x870e Hero. I really don't know what to pick here...

Thanks a lot for your advice!

NZXT claims it can support 420mm AIO's in top and front.  So get your 420 on!  I'd get the one you picked out, it's arguably the best one.  How much thinner do you want it to be?

ASRock's issues with the 9800X3D are over, get the NOVA.  ASUS has some customer service issues lately, so maybe not the best choice.

I'd look at the AORUS Master as well, though  I don't concern myself with the M.2 lanes since even SATA SSD's are fast enough for gaming.  Going Gen 5 SSD is a level of overkill beyond simply overkill.

looks like a great mainboard! the thing is, i wouldn't be able to install 3 NVME M2 there without degrading the PCIE for GPU to x8.

Yes, the NZXT H9 Flow 2025 says 420mm Radiator (Top) fits, but with the exception that the max thickness doesn't exceed 62mm. 😕

Because of that I'm asking for another 420mm (Which is controllable without software) which is as good as the Arctic but thinner. Still, I would love to go with the Arctic!

Maybe be quiet! Silent Loop 3 420?

The 5090 loses about 2% when going down to PCIe 5 x8 vs x16, so yeah.

What about the MSI MPG Carbon Wifi?  PCie 1 shares bandwidth with 2 and an M2 slot, but it has 4 M.2 slots... if am reading it right...

Yeah, like 2%. But I hope you get me here: I dont want to build something like that and lose this 2%. Even if it doesn't sound much, my inner monk is very against it 😄

Oh, the MPG X870E CARBON WIFI sounds good. Does it have the same BIOS like the X870E Tomahawk with shared problems? Or do you think I can go with that? It sounds damn great at paper and has everything what i need! Loving it!

Is the bequiet silentloop 3 420 as good as the Arctic? At least it should run without the need to use software for pump etc. That would be great. Or are there other AIOs which are preferable because of performance / pump noise / etc.

At that level, they are all very close in performance and quite overkill for that CPU.  You'd have to set temp limits to test noise levels and it's a dB or two.  You won't be running it hard anyway.

I get you on the 5090, and I'd be doing what you are as well.  I want every iota of performance I am paying for!!!

I have not heard of any issues with that MSI Carbon.  I think that's an AGESA issue, not a motherboard specific one.

Ongoing Concerns Over AMD AGESA 1.2.0.3a Patch-A Firmware and Ryzen 7 9800X3D

At this point, you're at the mercy of a broader chipset problem.  Luckily the BIOS's at this point are more just tweaking AGESA and other things rather than big performance tweaks.

I'm leaning toward the Carbon if it were my money.

True 😄

Then it will be the MSI x870e Carbon! 🙂

I've updated everything so far:
https://geizhals.de/wishlists/4619185

Regarding the AIO - yeah, it's overkill, but even here, just want the best for my money and maybe get with OC some more power out of it. Would love to try this out!!

Would you give the go for the bequiet silentloop 3 420mm? Or am I missing out on a better AIO?

Regarding the fans: I've added some to the wishlist which I'm considering:
image.png.09735d9b9d6e51b52cce549d4371ef61.png

Just need a nice soundprofile (For example I can't stand the Arctic P12/P14 - I currently have them) and great cooling and at best I can reuse them in my next case/build!

3for the AIO and 7 for the case.

What do you think is the best option?

The Be Quiet comes with silent wings I think.  Great fans. I have some on my own aio now about.  The EK ones sucked.

I'd definitely get it.

Ah, great catch. Yes, it uses the silent wings pro 4 High Speed.

So, your suggestions would be to get for the rest of the build just the same fans which are used in the AIO? 🙂

Pretty much.  I've been impressed with those fans.  The original EK fans on their 360mm AIO were louder but one actually started grinding.  So I replaced them, after getting suggestions here.  @Hinjima I think is a big Silent Wings fan, IIRC.

Yeah, the build looks great.  Really nothing would have been wrong with your previous choices, these I think are just a tiny bit better.  But at this price point, you're paying for a tiny bit better, so get it.
