Hi everyone,

I'm planning to upgrade my current gaming PC and would appreciate your input before I go ahead. I want something that’s future-proofbalanced, and not overkill. I play games frequently (mostly 1080p/1440p, so nothing crazy), and I was happy with my old system back when it was new. But I have had more and more problems with CPU temp (I know I probably just have to reapply thermal paste and make some adjustments). But since some of my components are very old anyway I thought I might as well make some upgrades. I just want something that will last me several more years and allow me to upgrade the GPU later without replacing the whole platform again.

Existing parts(List with models/links)

Current specs: (still running, but thermal issues and old platform):

  • CPU: Intel i7-4790K

  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 2070

  • RAM: 32 GB DDR3

  • Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VII Hero

  • Cooling: AIO from be quiet! (front-mounted, to be flipped properly, which might resolve cooling issues) ->be quiet! Silent Loop 2 360mm (AIO)

  • PSU: Corsair (older, still working) Corsair HX850i

  • Storage: 2x SSDs (SATA) -> Edit: See pcpartpicker

  • Case: Corsair likely ATX Mid Tower, but idk which one exactly

Planned upgrade (Phase 1 – urgent platform update):

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D

  • Motherboard: B650 or B650E with Wi-Fi 6 & Bluetooth (e.g. ASUS TUF, AORUS Elite AX)

  • RAM: 32 GB DDR5-6000 CL30 (2×16 GB)

  • Cooling: Reuse current AIO (after thermal paste + proper orientation)

I made a pcpartpicker list anyway for compatibility sake, even though it is not available  plus a link to a local vendor with the parts I chose (digitec):

I plan to reuse my current GPU, PSU, case, and SSDs for now.

Phase 2 (future upgrades, much later (too poor right now)):

  • GPU: Eventually upgrade to an RTX 4070 Super or better

  • PSU: Replace if stability becomes an issue

  • SSD: Add a Gen4 NVMe for faster game loading

Questions:

  1. Does this build make sense for longevity and gaming/working?

  2. Any red flags in terms of compatibility or missed opportunities?

  3. Are there better-value motherboard/CPU/RAM combos for my use case?

Sidenotes:

  • THIS Post is primarily about Phase 1, so which parts to get in the immediate future

  • I know you should not rely on it which is partly why I ask here as well, but I let ChatGPT, help me identify some issues and components and make recommendations.

  • Let me know if you need more information.

TLDR: Upgrading from an aging i7-4790K system with thermal issues to a modern AM5 platform (Ryzen 7 7800X3D + B650 board + DDR5). Reusing my RTX 2070, PSU, and storage for now. Budget is ~CHF 700. Looking for a future-proof setup for gaming (mostly 1080p/1440p), with plans to upgrade GPU later. Want to confirm if the planned build makes sense, is compatible, and offers good value. Based in Switzerland.

Thanks so much for the options, thats definitely a viable alternative. I gotta read into this a little more.
