I just purchased a Ryzen 7 9800X3D to upgrade from my Ryzen 5 5600X. This means I am also upgrading my motherboard and RAM. I've built computers before, but never actually done a platform upgrade. Are there any special steps I need to take like uninstalling drivers or other things? I've seen people saying to do a fresh install of Windows(I'd rather not) and I've also seen other people say that Windows will take care of it without me doing anything.

I'm doing the following upgrade:

CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X -> Ryzen 7 9800X3D

MBD: ASRock B550 Taichi -> Gigabyte B850 AORUS Elite WIFI7

RAM: 32GB DDR4 3600MHz CL18 - > 64GB DDR5 6000MHz CL30

Staying the same:

Cooler: Noctua NH-D15
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 10GB LHR

Storage: 2TB Samsung 970 EVO PLUS(boot), 8TB Samsung 870 QVO, 2TB Seagate HDD

PSU: Corsair RM850x

Since you're doing a platform upgrade, I always recommend a fresh install like you're building a new machine.

I wouldn't count on Windows picking the right chipset drivers, Lan/wifi drivers, etc.

Since you've effectively partitioned your data/drives, it shouldn't take long at all.

Remember, Win11 doesn't have wifi drivers included.

Thats one heck of an upgrade!  Nice 🙂

I personally always reinstall windows when I do such a major platform change. I just can't be bothered with potential issues.

I always write down my important programs and games so I remember what to reinstall asap after a fresh windows install.

The only time I didn't do a reinstall when upgrading from a R5 1600 to a R7 5800X (and new motherboard chipset too) I had to live with degraded CPU performance (it was a known issue - only fixed via Windows reinstall which I was too lazy to do). Windows always functioned correctly with no blue screens or other problems, but if you want to be sure to get the best experience, there is no workaround: backup the files that you want to keep if you don't have them in a cloud service/nas and just clean install.

Seems that a fresh install is highly recommended, so I'll do that. I have Windows installed on my C drive, but most of my programs(like Steam and it's games, Unreal Engine, Discord) and other stuff(like pictures, music, etc) are on my D drive. Some apps, however, like Microsoft Visual Studio have the core program on the C drive and have other stuff on the D drive.

Do I need to wipe the D drive too, cause that would really be a pain.
