Hey every one,

I’ve been helping some one upgrade their pc and I am getting their old hardware for free…

im in need of a NAS so im thinking of getting hex OS and building my one. But is this over kill? And can I “under clock” it or something for power savings?
ryzen 2950x thread ripper and 64gb of ram assuming ddr3? Maybe 4? What ever was standard back then and a 1080ti….
Is the hardware to old? Or over kill? Help! Thank you!!!

All these for free?! Then ignore this question! Any system is fine; it's apps running on it which might ever push the Ryzen into limits. However, since HexOS requires royalty, you may wish to play with a royalty-free one like TrueNAS or most generic Linux distros. Put everything on it until you start concerning power, noises or other possible issues!

In any case, only DDR4 RAM may be used by this Ryzen, with frequency no higher than 3200 MT/s to ensure stability.😃

All hardware was free. And it was a working system. Hex os is the only thing I’d be paying for. The life time licence seems expensive but it’s a buy once cry once and I don’t have time or energy to learn how to set up trunas…. The other idea is I might just try to sell the rig and build the naps later when I have money for hard drives and build a more power friendly nas.

Heck yeah that's great, especially for free! I have a much worse system running proxmox with several services like TrueNAS and it's doing fine, barely any overhead too.

Yeah the parts are in my garage, would need new case. Boot drive and storage hard drives.
