When I went to play minecraft with shaders today, it only used like 40% of my 3090, and around the same on my 7500f, but I was getting only 80-100+ FPS (varies a lot). This makes no sense, as just yesterday the GPU was constantly at 90% with me getting 200FPS+. I haven't installed any updates, I checked that I don't have framecap on, the power mode is set to max, the power limit is set to 107% in MSI afterburner with the same undervolt I always used. I also tried it in quake 2 rtx, and the usage was also at only 50%, but for some reason cyberpunk still works just fine and uses all of the GPU

I know you already did but make sure there are no processes running in the background (chrome tabs, downloads, ongoing updates, etc.) that could slow down your system.

You can also take a look at the latest updates or versions of Windows and Nvidia drivers. Automatic updates are really hard to turn down for those two.

Since you are using MSI afterburner, can you try to revert all parameters to default settings for your GPU ? Sometimes there are glitches with settings and GPUs can be limited in so many ways that it's easy to miss one parameter. Power limit, temp limit, locked clock speed, memory overclock, different voltages....)

And since you were getting 200+ fps not long ago, I suppose that your computer wasn't bottlenecking elsewhere (disk bandwidth, internet speed, available memory).

As for your monitor, what is its rated refresh rate ? If you have a 75 Hz, 80+ fps is more than enough but if you have a 240 Hz monitor, I understand that losing half the fps may impact some games.

Hope that helps 🙂

The FPS definitely matters to me as I have a 360Hz monitor. Resetting the MSI afterburner settings didn't change anything. I haven't seen any updates from nvidia, and windows updates don't install since I have reviOS blocking them

Then maybe the game settings changed ? Anti-aliasing, DLSS, FSR, upscaling and downscaling can all have an effect on GPU usage.

There is also the possibility that the nvidia drivers got corrupted somehow. I recommend using DDU to remove the drivers completely and reinstalling the latest version. If that still does not change, maybe try installing a prior version.

Good luck !

Nah definitely not the settings, may try reinstalling drivers later, but why would it work fine in cyberpunk but not the 2 other games?

That's why I suggested game settings since not all games exhibit the issue.

Also, Cyberpunk is mostly CPU limited so it makes little sense that this one uses 90% and the other games are topping at 50%.

Something definitely changed from the before and after state of your computer. But I really don't know what it is at this point.

Good luck !

I tried changing everything I can, including shaders, but no matter if I have shaders on or off I still get around 40% GPU usage, even though the FPS is very different

I think this is time to test your hardware. Too many things have no explanation.

I suggest you try using your graphics card in another computer and/or try using another card in your computer to see if the issue is hardware related or simply a software issue.

Edit: I got a last minute idea. Do you have a dual BIOS switch on your GPU ? Try switching it to the other position to see if it changes anything.

It's set to performance mode, which i also haven't touched, but ill try it

Usually, the only difference between performance and quiet modes is the fan curve. Since you can change it with MSI afterburner anyway, treat it as a second copy of the BIOS in case the first one fails.

nah same low GPU usage in quiet mode too

That was worth a try.

I think the next step is testing the hardware.

Unless you want to try wiping your boot drive and install a fresh Windows. Whichever floats your boat 🙂

The GPU is 100% fine, as it was playing cyberpunk just like before, same for CS2, but minecraft and quake in particular decided to live their own life. I don't feel like reinstalling windows, since there's like over a terabyte of data that i don't want to copy back

Unfortunately, I reached the end of my expertise here. I don't have access to similar hardware and I don't play those games.

I wish you luck and have a nice day !

I just found out that quake was somehow set to a higher resolution, when i put it back to 1080p it was 150 fps again. I still have no idea why is minecraft getting such low fps, as my friend with a 6900xt and all the same settings gets way more, 75fps vs 120 in a very intense area

Maybe you can try changing the resolution of your other games to see the impact it has on GPU usage.
