Hello,

at the moment I am looking for the hardware for my new workstation and hopping that you have some nice recommendations.

My requirements:

  • The operating system shall be a Linux (unsure which distro exactly, but might be Fedora or Manjaro).
  • CPU:
    • MY current system has an Intel Core i7-6850K and the speed is sufficient. However, a newer state-of-the-art CPU would be nice. Intel and AMD would be fine.
  • RAM:
    • At least 64 GB and ECC (because the ZFS filesystem might be used).
  • Motherboard:
    • If possible without "Kiddie stuff" like RGB or WiFi.
    • An onboard 10 GBit SFP+ would be nice, but not a showstopper.
    • PCI-Bifurcation would be nice to be more flexible with future hardware and connecting M.2 SSDs to PCIe.
    • Some spare PCIe slots for later extensions and also some spare PCIe lanes.
  • SSDs:
    • At the moment I am planning to use 2x 2TB and 2x 4TB M.2 (as two mirrors).
  • GPU:
    • The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 of my current system will be available and could be re-used. Depending on the CPU and motherboard also an iGPU might be sufficient.
  • Chassis:
    • Definitely no glass panel on the side.
    • Should be quiet.
    • A 120mm fan on the front would be nice.
    • Around 2-3 5.25" slots on the front side would be nice.
    • The format of the chassis should be Desktop, Mini-Tower or Midi-Tower (in this order).
    • 2x USB3.x at the front.
  • The system should be power saving. My current PC draws around 130 Watt when surfing the web which is way too much. During normal office stuff the new system should stay way below 100 watts.
  • The system shall be used for:
    • Office applications (most of the time)
    • Video editing with DaVinci Resolve (the editing should be smooth, but if the video export at the end might take a bit longer it is acceptable).
    • Gaming (a few times Battlefield or FarCry).
    • Virtualization of VMs:
      • 1-2 VMs running Linux/Windows.
      • USB-Passthrough to the VMs.

I am looking forward on your recommendations and thanks a lot in advance,

Thomas
