I got a new laptop, and I didnt realize this earlier but its been throttling like crazy, it was at about 50% CPU usage downloading some photos from iCloud and it maxed temps at 105C (CPU package) while throttling, is this normal? I know it is a really power hungry chip at 115W but isn't this a bit exessive? Temps were found with HWiNFO, no stress tests where used, power draw was about 40W for the chip. I really don't want to undervolt or do any BIOS updates since it is a laptop and not my normal desktop where I am more comfortable messing around.

When the CPU reached its hottest, before it started throttling what was the temperature?

Have you tried turning it off and on again? Maybe Restart it?

Around 90-100C, its gotten up to 106C while throttling though

Are the windows power profiles/settings on power saving? Since it’s new, have you run all the updates and the vendor updates from the app that it comes with?

profile is on best performance, what updates should I do, id rather not do BIOS but I'm open to chipset and those

If you’re not comfortable with a BIOS update that’s fine but I’d recommend doing all the other updates, chipset, WiFi, Bluetooth, audio, etc. you can get them directly from the manufacturer website but it’s easier if you use the built-in app to automatically install them. Also try setting power profile to medium or battery saving performance if you can.

Which app? I deleted most of acer's propriety stuff, I will change the power profile now

Yeah the proprietary app. It has built in features to run updates.

The app didn't show any new updates but I reinstalled 33/38 drivers, the rest gave me errors.

When I installed the drivers I think I accidentally killed my audio driver because nothing sound related worked, I reinstalled windows and I'm good now. Still hot as hell though, 2% cpu usage according to acer's own software at 65-70C.

Do you have a lot of startup processes or background processes? Also does it have good cooling? Not on a blanket or hot room?

Startup processes and background processes are minimal, not on a blanket and room temp is room temp

What else (besides what you have mentioned) will it be doing when it throttles?

Almost nothing, idle its at like 70C

That link is useless, its solution is a Mac OS app that just killed turbo boost, I can just attempt to undervolt/underclock rather then that

  • 3 weeks later...

sorry, life happens man, finally coming back to this, hope you were able to get it to work normally but if not:

uhhh, i think that i meant to say since it's a laptop 70C makes sense....it's still on the high end now that i think about it again.

I would think to try a different browser. Also try to start it in safe mode and start enabling things until you find what causes the laptop to work so hard.
