Long story short, I bought a Dell Optiplex 3050 (8 GB RAM, 256gb SSD, intel i5-7500) and put in an ASUS GTX 1060 I got for $90.

I plan on selling it to make some money.

I noticed that there was lots of stuttering in some games (mainly Fortnite). Fortnite is notorious for stuttering, but on Performance mode, DX11, and DX12, the CPU was at 100% and the GPU was only around 40%. No high-CPU background tasks in Task Manager. That's a CPU bottleneck! (Temps are fine.)

At least it's not my PC! (I have a 12600k and 6700 XT)

How bad is the bottleneck though? Is there anything I can do to make it perform better in all games, to make the buyer happy with their new PC? I also noticed subpar performance in other games (although no stuttering), mainly Apex Legends and Counter-Strike 2. Apex got 120 FPS, and CS2 got 130 FPS (160 with FSR Performance)

Once again, I really don't care that much because I'm going to sell it soon, I just want some quick suggestions/things I could tell the buyer to do to improve performance.  I deleted everything but Fortnite off the small SSD (preparing to sell it), so that's all I can test if you have any suggestions.

one of the main reasons why I don't play fortnite on my pc. My 5600 spikes to 100% even at 1080p with all low on performance and it stutters like crazy. It's mostly due to optimization so I instead play it on my Xbox and it's much better. Seems to be normal since that CPU also doesn't have multi threading. That paired with fortnite's bad optimization is a reason why

how's RAM usage in game? Use msi afterburner's OSD to see instead of tabbing out

how's the PSU in that? has it got the 6 pin power connector that an ASUS DUAL GTX 1060 should have?

That's understandable for an i5 7500.

Regarding changing that, there's not much you can do if the game wants the CPU at 100%. Really the only thing is repasting it and/or cooler swapping to see if its running into a thermal limit. You can tell if that's the case with something like HWinfo64. That may provide a solid 20-30% increase in performance from what you're seeing if its running into a severe thermal limit running at 100% the whole time.

GL on the sale, I imagine the margin won't be substantial or worth the effort unless you get really predatory.

Vram or Ram? Don't want to test right now but the ram is around 94% used

Not too bad, on apex this channel got about 140 fps

But zwormz got about 230 on CS2 with low settings (without FSR) so update your drivers

CS2 performance is weird then. How was RAM usage in these games? at 94% again? I'd say get another 8gb stick anyways (it'll also look good on the listing and probs bump up the price by $30 though the upgrade was only $25)

Those systems can have UEFI limitations as well, OEM ones like that which prevent a sustained higher boost clock because of their poor thermal/VRM design.

Either way, an i5 7500 and 1060 6GB isn't a bad basic PC system, I just don't think you'll get a lot of profit if you spent $90 on the GPU and potentially a couple hundred on the PC. I think its better off as a sale for an office PC, since an i5 7500 is still very capable as a workstation. Gaming in 2024, its a stretch, unless you can find an ignorant grandparent buying a fortnite gaming PC for sub $300.

idk but I'd assume RAM usage is similar. I already deleted Steam and CS2 so I cant test 😞

I'd still install another stick if RAM usage in fortnite was so high. Zwormz was using around 10gb in his benchmark on low settings in CS2 and in apex the benchmarker in the video was using about 9

I'm looking to make $200 or more. The maximum price I'll probably be able to sell for is $400. I've spent $200 so far. So if I get more RAM I think I'll be over my budget. Thanks for the suggestion though, I bet that would help 🙂
