Looking for a core upgrade

No need for WIFI, because the case is quite big, and this PC wasn't made for mobility.
No need for sophisticated DAC, because I also plan to get a dedicated piece that's fitted with an amp, for the headphones I got (BeyerDynamic DT-770 Pro).
Also no thunderbolt needed either. I have nothing to use it with.

I need DDR5 and support for 5th gen NVMe.

TUF B650-Plus seems like a good fit, then. ASRock B650 Pro RS also has one PCIE 5.0 M.2 slot, though only 3 audio jacks, if that matters for your streaming/recording.

Hey there, guys, I've been saving up in the past few months to upgrade my PC.
The current PC is by no means bad, but the motherboard has been having some quite annoying glitches, and I've pretty much had enough.
Otherwise, it's decent, I could stretch out with it a bit more if I really have to. It has an i7 8700K paired with 32 GB of DDR 4 and an RTX 2080 Super.

I'm planning to get a core upgrade. Just motherboard, CPU and RAM, and after I save some more, I'll decide on the GPU.
My questions are:
What's best for a gaming/streaming/recording rig? Do I go for Intel or AMD?
I heard that Intel's latest gen, looks more like a revision, rather than a full gen. So do I wait for the 15th gen lineup, or what?
As for AMD, I'm completely clueless about how they have been doing.

I'm aiming for full performance and pretty much no bling. Not interested in RGB or other stuff I only inflates the price
I'm thinking of something that makes good use of DDR5 memory, and latest generations of SSDs.

So, I need advice on which CPU to go for, and also a good motherboard for it.
Any help will be appreciated.

AMD are currently kind of ruling the CPU department for gaming, their 7800X3D is the best gaming cpu you can get right now, on top of that, it runs 1/3 the temperature of the 13/14900K and is 1/3 cheaper

System specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D [-30 PBO all core]

GPU: Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT NITRO+ [1050mV, 2.8GHz core, 2.6Ghz mem]

Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI

RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB 32GB 6000MHz CL32 DDR5

Storage: 2TB SN850X, 1TB SN850 w/ heatsink, 500GB P5 Plus (OS Storage)

Case: 5000D AIRFLOW

Cooler: Thermalright Frost Commander 140

PSU: Corsair RM850e

The gaming CPU to get is the 7800X3D, but the 14700 is better for productivity / mixed usage, however streaming and recording aren't usually that demanding, unless you're doing a lot of editing (which sometimes uses the graphics card more anyway), so it's probably not worth the switch in your case.

The AMD CPUs (at least, at stock) are generally easier to manage and cool (even though they run hot) than the Intel equivalent, because of the lower maximum power consumption, but the 13600K/14600K are fine with a decent air cooler and gaming is less intensive than full multithreaded load, so you can get away with less.

I'd suggest looking at reviews of those two CPUs first and if your usage isn't that CPU intensive, your decision is made.

I'll get a beefy cooler for the CPU, regardless. I'm thinking NH-D15. Should do a fine work, regardless of my choice.
And, yeah so far everything I've seen points to AMD.

Any advice on the motherboard? The one I have right now is a Z370 Aorus Gaming 7.
I'm really not pleased with the problems it's been having, and the support department was entirely useless.
I'm pretty much afraid to stay with Gigabyte, to be honest.

Peerless assassin is likely to be better value if available in your region.

It depends what features you want, PCI-E 5.0 (on graphics, or M.2) is the main difference between boards, other than that:

- Quality of the VRM/heatsinks.

- Number of M.2 slots.

- Number of sound jacks & quality of the codec.

- USB ports and type (e.g. type C).

High-end boards also have Thunderbolt / USB 4, 10Gb LAN, WIFI7, USB fast charge/PD and DP over USB Type-C.

B650 Tomahawk has 3x M.2 (all PCI-E 4.0) and a decent audio codec with rear SPDIF & 5 jacks.

TUF B650-Plus has 3x M.2 (1 is PCI-E 5.0).

B650E-F Strix is one of the cheapest B650E boards with PCI-E 5.0 graphics.

TUF A620-Pro is usually a decent price, has 2 M.2 slots, 5 audio jacks, 1x USB Type-C on the rear.

Interesting. I have the Z370 AORUS Gaming 5, and love it.  No issues and simple XMP stability.  Plus their RMA department was fast with my 1080Ti issue years ago.

In fact, I love Gigabyte boards over all the others, hence my B650 AORUS Pro AX which I was going to recommend by way of the Elite AX for your 7800X3D.  😞

Are you referring to Peerless Assassin 120 SE? I can see it's praised by Gamers Nexus.
It doesn't seem to be available in my country but I may get it from somewhere else around the EU.
Thanks for the tip.

From what I understand, the motherboard I have now doesn't allow the SSD to go at full speeds because the lane is shared with other components (don't know the technicality in detail).
I'm just going for full performance on the RAM and SSD.

Maybe I was unlucky with this piece, I don't know.
Basically, at some point it started refusing to shut down properly.
I made a thread with that issue, you can check it here.
Alongside that issue, the USBs oftentimes remain powered, after shutdown, even though they're not configured to do that.

Thank you for the help. So for now I have:

TUF B650-Plus - 202 EUR
Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR5 6400MHz - 151 EUR
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D - 454.06 EUR

Noctua NH-D15 - 103 EUR
It all sums up to around 915 EUR, which is well below the intended budget of around 1200 EUR.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions.
Maybe can find the cooler you mentioned, and save even more, but the chances are slim. It doesn't seem to be sold in my region at all.

Again, NH-D15 is overpriced for the current market, if you can get any thermalright coolers theyre much better bang for buck, if you cant check out the AK/AG620 from deepcool, very similar cooler to both of the aforementioned ones and again half the price of the noctua for the same performance

I never considered that, thanks.
Although, I don't think it will be necessary with the Vengeance kit, cause they're really low in profile.
Just checked, and as you suggested, it's "AMD EXPO Profile Ready"
I also found the Deepcool AK620 to be available, so out with the Noctua.
Everything is now lowered to 878.14 EUR

I'd mark both of you the rep, if I could.
Thanks a lot for the help. If all goes well, I'll be putting this thing together myself in 3 weeks.
