Hey,

I got a SSD from a colleague that was originally in a Mac pro 2013. It is 1TB in size and I thought this might be a cheap way to get an extra SSD.

Before installing I had a bios time of roughly 5 seconds max. Now after installing it I have to wait over 3 minutes. It just sits at the main board logo. I used a pcie to apple SSD converter to fit it into a pcie X1 slot.

Mb: b550 Aorus AC

CPU: Ryzen 9 3900X

32gb of Corsair 3600mhz

Any ideas how this could be fixed apart from throwing the SSD out?

I already tried fast boot but it isn't working any better.

Likely related. What SSD is this? What did you have before? Where is Windows? What adapter is this?

The adapter: https://amzn.eu/d/eWjbk13

Don't really know if there's a model number that makes any sense to share because it is a apple original part but shows as "Apple SSD SM1024F" in the bios.

My system has a SanDisk 500gb SSD where windows is and a 2tb Samsung Evo 980 with Linux. There are some hard drives but this shouldn't affect any of this.

I did a clean format of the drive with diskpart.

Weird part is that is does show up in the boot sequence (from which I removed it) but not in the info what is plugged in (in picture)IMG_20231220_021506_611.thumb.jpg.2f6b17ae03d16cf26cbf1201c640f4eb.jpg

Have you tried plugging the adapter on your second or third x16 connectors?

Those are pcie 3.0 unlike the x1 connectors that are pcie 2.0

If pcie gen compatability is playing any role in this, this could mitigate the issue.

Only thing that pops in my head right now.

Qoute my reply if you want me to answer back.

so he's running 3.0 x4 nvme at 2.0 x1 ...  that's according to google. 500Mb/s.. slower than a fast regular sata3 sdd

PCIe 2.0 x1 is slow, very slow. But you said Windows is on another drive so its speed would not play a role. Something else is getting caught up during the boot sequence.

Not really, that ssd is SATA according to the model number. The adapter must have a sata to pcie converter, the board looks void of any logic though.

The SSD is spec out at a max interface speed of 600 MB/s, so the limit of pcie 2.0 x1 of 500 MB/s is no big deal.

Still doesn't explain the unusual boot time, seems like a bad quality adapter I guess.

So i've tried it in the third x16 slot which didn't solve it but decreased the startup time by a lot. I measured about 3 minutes before and now "only" 2. To make sure it isn't anything else I've also taken it out and voila 5 second startup time is back. It is weird because the adapter doesn't have any bad reviews and the drive worked perfectly in the Mac.
