All your asking the Athlon to do is run your OS. Are you running Windows or a Linux distro?

So I have some spare components right now from my previous build. Currently I have:

  1. Athlon 200GE
  2. Asrock B450M
  3. 8GB DDR4
  4. 2X3TB HHD
  5. 1X128 NVME (Boot Drive)
  6. 350W PSU

 

I intended to use it as a media server (Jellyfin) and file server (Nextcloud) and run it through a reverse proxy. Should I buy a dedicated GPU for media transcoding? I'm thinking of buying a used Intel Arc A380 6GB ($120). Or should I buy an HP ProDesk 400 G4 MT (Intel i3 7100) and use the onboard GPU (~$200) instead?

Absolutely, yes. Your old Athlon will grind to a halt if it is tasked with any transcoding.

 

Personally, I would go for the $120 Arc. The i3 7100 and your existing Athlon are relatively similar in terms of performance but the Arc will trounce the i3's HD630's iGPU for anything you can offload to it.

Should I stay using Athlon 200ge or upgrade the CPU down the line? I could probably afford Athlon 3000g ($20) or stretch the budget to Ryzen 3 3500x ($70) if it is necessary for future-proofing, but I personally do not want to create e-waste.
