GPU upgrade timing

Si3Rra_7

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qsF7fv

This is my current build. 3700x and a GTX1070. So i need a GPU upgrade YESTERDAY. Thinking of getting a RX7800(sapphire) and a 5800x3D to balance it out.

While the RX7800 seems like the best bang for buck, this whole fucking generation has thrown off all my common sense. AMD doesn't release the 7800 and 7700 for 9 MONTHS, nVidia is mad as a bug on pricing and they delayed their midrange releases aswell.

So help me gauge on how good the timing is to buy a GPU right now, including rumor mill info. Is nVidia about reduce prices? Or pull a "super" semi-generational refresh like they did with the 20 series? Or even bust out the 5000 series to fix their shit?

Need to make sure I don't make a mistake cause these European prices are killing me man. Same prices compared to western europe on a eastern europe salary... (the 7800xt is 680 euros for reference).

Instead of the 7800 XT buy a used 6950 XT from ebay, you should be able to get one for around 650 euros. Then you could buy a 5800x3d.

My First PC
CPU: Ryzen 5 5600x
Cooler: Asus TUF Gaming LC240
Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix B550-f gaming
RAM: 4x8 GB Corsair Vengeance RS (3200 MHz, CL16)
Storage: 1tb Samsung 980 Pro
Graphics Card: Asus Dual RTX 2060 OC
Case: Deepcool Matrexx 50
Power Supply: Corsair RM650x
Headset: Razer Blackshark V2
Keyboard: Corsair K70 Pro Mini (Speed Silver switches)
Mouse: Razer Viper Mini
Only changes I have made is I sold the 2060 for $235 AUD and bought a Powercolor Red Devil 6700 XT for $400 second hand (it was barely used, think I scored a deal on Ebay with that).
I'm learning video editing and trying to get some cash as a high school student.
I like F1, my favourite team is Scuderia Ferrari and favourite driver is Charles Leclerc. Favourite track is Red Bull Ring in Austria.
Playing with a 1080p 60hz monitor right now, hoping to upgrade to a 1440p 144hz one soon.

Living in AU and that pisses me off since every event is late at night or early in the morning (almost every F1 race starts around 11 PM AEST time)

won't most of those be mined on? don't really personally trust 2nd hand market.

EDIT: also, not with that power consumption. i did post my build which has 650W PSU.

As reviews come out, the 6800XT seems like the 6000 series are still a decent performer in raster.

Although the 6000 series might not get all the features like 7000 or when 8000 comes, not sure how that stuff will be handled.

Also you have recording and stuff, as the 7000 uses AV1? so most of the newer ones have some added benefits or if one likes Nvidia's Nvenc.

(7000-8000 series might be more dedicated for AMD AI solutions, I would assume?)

but agree the prices are a bit wild when seeing older cards that nearly outperform newer ones, but just for an GPU the 6800xt or higher often is sometimes on sale or used market. if one is experienced and knows what to look for, like the used market or other cards that you might want for a certain reason.

5800x3D is a nice CPU, but could get limited for future upgrades/changed and it's a bit in a weird spot, but can be a nice I guess and whatever its price is.

The 7800XT is, pretty much, just a 6800XT with new features like AV1, potentially better new feature support in the drivers etc.

The 6800 non-XT might still be the value king.

I'm pretty much in the same place, except i alr have the 5800x3d and i have a 5700xt. Personally, i'm probably gonna get the 7800xt. Yeah, it may not be a crazy performance lift from last gen, but it performs the same, is the same price, is a lot more efficient and has new features. So it kinda just makes sense to get it, unless you find a crazy 6800xt deal or something. But for me, the 7800xt seems good for the time being

as for the cpu, i would say get the 5800x3d, you can keep the same motherboard and ram and still get major performance uplift. Maybe next gen will be the time to pull the trigger. But if you're upgrading i think the 5800x3d is the best option.

i mean i have a 1060 6gb card currently, just ordered the asrock 7800xt challenger card from newegg for $500 usd and it came with starfield premium free worth $100 so id say its a great time to buy, especially if your coming from a much older generation. Great price and if you dont currently have a 6800xt then the improvement comparisons to it mean nothing in the real world to you.

well the 7800 XT isn't great in terms of like pricing-performance. Also 650 would be fine, if a 4090 can run on a 550w PSU with an undervolt a 6950 XT can run on a 650w just fine. Also you could undervolt it so PSU won't be an issue, you can change that out to a 750w later when you have some extra money. Also they don't necessarily have to be mining cards, I'm pretty sure thats still more popular with Nvidia cards. Also mining doesn't necessarily damage the cards.

can you mention these features difference between 6800 xt and 7800 xt?

I'm still rocking 1060 and now moving to 1440p gaming, which won't cut it. so I'm definitely will get either one, just curious what features I will be missing (nvidia is way overpriced in my country and I don't turn RT on)

and how much price gap between 6800 xt and 7800 xt that's "make sense" or justified?

Besides AV1 encoding and decoding, the other features would be:

AMD Radeon™ Anti-Lag+ - https://www.amd.com/en/technologies/radeon-software-anti-lag

AMD HYPR-RX - a new driver experience that allows users to optimize their games using AMD Software features for their RDNA3-based Radeon GPUs, achieving increased performance and lower latency with ease.

Potentially better frame generation in FSR 3.0 (not a thing yet)

Pretty much nothing that really matters. XD

A 7800XT should be priced roughly the same as the 6800XT to be a better option. Maybe 10-30€ more would be acceptable to consider.

Is StarField a game you wanna play (and havent already bought)? If so, take it into consideration when comparing value.

I didn't get a 7800/77xt due to size limitations in my case (bought a 4070), but the reviews make them seem like sensible priced, if not that exiting new products. If you want a new card in that performance range, it seems not bad 🙂 But yes, my feel of pricing has gone out the window as well. Before the Crypto boom I frowned upon buying a card worth much more than 2000 DKK (typical x060 /x600 price tier) but i just paid 5300 DKK for my new GPU (granted it was a conscious luxury buy with my christmas bonus, but still)

mITX is awesome! I regret nothing (apart from when picking parts or have to do maintainance *cough*cough*)
