Upgrade Questions

Hello i am currently thinking of upgrading my CPU on my set up currently i have ( i want to upgrade to a Ryzen 9 5900x)

- 5 5600x

- 3060ti

- msi b550 gaming plus

- 650w power supply

- 2x16 3200 ram

- 1tb 980 pro m.2

- 2tb barracuda

 

and i was wondering if it is worth the upgrade to the CPU or if something else would be more beneficial first, or if it is the right thing to upgrade if the rest of my set up can support it, Thanks! :D

Can you tell us why you want the 5900x?  It's a productivity upgrade.

 

If you have use of that CPU, you may want to look into upgrading to 13th gen or Ryzen AM5.

Why a 5900X? Do you do CPU-intensive work on the system?

If for gaming, the better upgrades would be the 5700X (cheap upgrade) or the 5800X3D (best gaming upgrade).

For gaming get the 5800X3D (tho the 3060 ti shouldn't be bottlenecked from the 5600x) and if its productivity then yes a high core count cpu would be better

ohh ok yeah i just saw it was on sale i am looking into upgrading for gaming, do you think that the 5800X3D would be a good upgrade that can produce the most results and still be compatible?

For gaming, that is the best CPU without changing motherboards.

ok should i upgrade anything else with it or do you think that just the 5800X3D would be a solid upgrade without being bottle necked too much by anything?

Without knowing the resolution (assuming 1080p), or games... hard to say.   But it IS a solid upgrade on the CPU side.

 

You can also look at what you play and what resolution, it may make sense to upgrade that 3060Ti as well.

 

Optional recommend:  Lost that HDD and swap in a 2TB SSD.  No PC in 2023 should have a HDD for game libraries.

yes i am doing 1080p, just for future reference though is any of the 40 series cards a good upgrade i have heard many mixed reviews and dont know much about any of the AMD cards so what GPU's should i be looking into? also is my ram config solid for both these upgrades?

For 1080p, stick with the 3060Ti.  It's a great 1080p card and anything you upgrade to will be for 1440p or just more fps in 1080p.

 

RAM is great, decent speed and plenty of it.  

 

SSD is all you have left to upgrade then.

Upgrade the monitor.

Get a 1440p 144Hz one, those are cheap now, and the RTX 3060 Ti can game on 1440p quite alright (check the latest Hardware Unboxed video comparing a 6700XT, 3060Ti and 4060Ti, they did 1080p and 1440p).

what monitor would you recommend for that im trying to keep this not to expensive so im hoping i don't have to pay like 700$ and i will defanetly try to find the comparison video.

Since it's a secondary drive, I would look at bang for buck.  For example... 2TB for $65, even being Gen 3 NVMe...

VA panel, probably slower, not sure if it's fast enough actually to be a 144Hz panel (it might be slow so you might get double images or motion blur). Not familiar with the brand.
