Budget (including currency): 16000 ± 2000 dkk

Country: Denmark

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: 1440p gaming and programming. I might have to work with machine learning, depends on some life decisions which is why I have one option with nvidia GPU. Gaming includes the newest AAA titles such as starfield, red dead redemption etc. but also popular games such as LoL, CS:GO and Valorant

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I have all peripherals, so no need for that. While the price of the thermalright peerless assassin is not available through pcpartpicker, it should become available at around 350 dkk soon. I do like the fractal north case and would like to keep even though it costs a little extra compared to other cases.

I would like to stay at 16k however I don't know whether it is feasible with a 4080. I have looked at the 4070 (TI), however 12 GB vram feels kinda bad especially for ML.

The only difference between the two builds is the GPU.

Except when you use Clear Linux for gaming. It is one of the easiest distributions to install.

7900XTX will suddenly perform like 4080 in most games.

And do not forget that the AMD Linux GPU drivers are the most reliable GPU drivers right now.

I know exactly how good the Nvidia, AMD and Intel drivers are on any operating system.

from the limited ml experience i've picked up from observing my father cuda was used way more, has that changed??

if yes and amd if a viable option then you should go with it, but if not, im pretty sure you can get some used old quadro on ebay to cover that need

I think 7900 XTX plus Clear Linux will be on par with the RTX 4080.

Do not forget that Nvidia users can not use the best operating systems.

Think about Alpine Linux, Devuan, OpenBSD and Clear Linux.

Your question pretty much boils down to this. In case you don't, then the AMD build should be good. Otherwise you have no option but go with the 4080.

Has not changed, seems like OP is just unsure if they will be doing ML stuff or not.

I don't belive OP is planning to game on linux to begin with, so this poitn is moot.
