Dell Optiplex NAS?

Looking for a NAS to host my minecraft server but have the lowest of all budgets after building my gaming PC. Should i just get an optiplex and add RAM?

A downside of a lot of those Optiplex systems is that they tend to lack drive bays - most only have two or sometimes just one, which doesn't make for much of a NAS.

 

Do you have some specific options you're considering?

Just a terabyte or two should do i think.

I was talking about specific Optiplex systems, not the drives.

 

Do you have any listings or product pages that you've been looking at to price them out?

Yeah just 5th gen cpu or above. Nothing else really bothers me as long as its under $100 aud

So you don't have any listings that you're considering?

 

I'm very confused now. It seems that you want a computer for a Minecraft server, not a NAS. And that you want to be linked to any old cheap computer that might work for that under $100AUD - like you don't have any in mind yet. Is that right?

Yes. I basically just want to know if an optiplex with 16g of RAM should handle a minecraft server. I know i am being vague, so heres a listing i am looking at.

The i5 in there is almost the same one for their "Best" configuration.

 

I wouldn't recommend that box for a NAS, because it only has a single HDD bay, but as a Minecraft server, it should do decently well. You may not even need to upgrade the RAM or HDD.
