Hi, this is my first time building pc and i did the following

I have a lian li controller that controls fans and it needs to be hooked to 2 SATA power supplies and 1 usb header to work.

I hooked up fans to this connector, and just plugged in the 15pin SATA power supplies.

And then I switched on the PSU. At this point no other device was connected to psu not even the motherboard, i just wanted to check if fans would run, also the controller was only connected to psu and fans and no other connections were done(usb to mobo was not done basically) .

Within 5seconds I could smell burnt plastic kind of smell from both PSU and controller.

I am not sure if this is compatibility issue or I need to plug in everything in for controller and then only connect psu sata connector.

Now I am very scared to go ahead with any kind of build and am not sure if the PSU is faulty, was it my fault that I didn't connect all the wires of fan controller, was the fan controller faulty.

Please I need some suggestion or help.

I am very new to this forum, so very sorry if I do something wrong, any guidance will be really appreciated. Thanks 🙂

I am not hearing "I studied PC hardware and learned about building PCs for x time or x books.".

Any kind of equipment can be faulty out of the box nowadays. Chinese Brands are the ones more likely culprit because of the lack of quality control.

Also your PC inside works on DC current and you cannot invert connectors even if it does let you. "+" goes to "+" and "-" goes to "-".

You need more studying or more money to experiment on your own skin. I suggest the study path more efficient.

As for the burnt smell, you have a short in the fan controller or the PSU or both. Now there are PSU tester gadgets for sale, if you want to redeem the PSU or test it.

I do not suggest you use it on MB after smoking it. I'd get rid of the cheap fan controller too.
