cpu for steam os?

AMD cards are supported. In the first beta they weren't but now they are. However nvidia is better for Linux. AMD refuses to hire enough engineers to work on Linux drivers, pretty pathetic. With the amount of Linux games being announced and with external pressure the chances are that AMD will fix the drivers by the time steamos comes out of beta, but nvidia is obviously a safer bet for Linux.

As far as the CPU is concerned, just forget about the fact that it is a steam machine and make your decision in the same way you would for a normal gaming pc. Either AMD or INtel is ok depending on performance at your budget.

is there any difrence between amd or intel cpu for a steam box? i am thinking about building one and i read an article saying that they picked intel cpu's for best compatability (im not talking about gpu's fyi) and It made me think i dont want to spend 250$ for a core i5 id rather get a fx 8350 or athlon x4 750k for way cheaper(i realize the i5 performs better). so I guess im asking can i build a steam box with a 8350 as long as it uses nvidia graphics ? i know amd graphics arent supported at the moment (at least to my knowledge)

Project black out: cpu: athlon x4 750k @4.7ghz, Mobo: asrock fm2+ a55 vg3+, ram: 1x 8gb hyperx 1866mhz, video card: 1x saphire radeon r9 270x, Storage: 1tb hdd ssd in the future,  cooling: 2 noctua 120mm fans 1 on rad one front intake.

thank you very much! and I will post my steam box in the build logs when i finish it !!!
