I have an old laptop from a friend that i am supposed to fix but i can't figure out how to fix it because i haven't used XP in years. basicaly I get an error that says there is a corrupted or missing files in the directory "\windows\system32\config\system" and i'm not sure how to fix this file. I have a USB drive with XP home on it so i can launch the setup but I'm not allowed to format the drive because it apparently has pictures or something on it and i will only format it with the owners permission and as a last resort.

If it were me I'd pull the hard drive, jam it into my desktop, back up the important stuff then format it and do a clean install.  Other than that you can try the windows repair utility, sometimes magic happens.
