Hi everyone,

I recently customized my PS5 with the DBrand dark plates 2.0 and found myself left with a lug of plastic stock plates that I didn’t want to get rid of. Oddly enough, I was able to find an empty middle chassis for the PS5 and it got me thinking: what if I could build a “Sleeper PC” inside of a PS5 shell?

I took some reference photos (attached at the bottom) and did a soft mock up of potential layouts for what the build could look like. As much as I would like to fit a discrete GPU into the build, I don’t think it would fit, considering an ITX mobo and a PSU - not to mention it probably wouldn’t perform well thermally. So my backup would be to slap on an APU (maybe the new 5800x3D) and call it a day. But would it actually perform better than a PS5?

I’ve tried to look around to see if anybody else has thought of doing this, but the only thing I could find was an Austin Evans video of fitting a switch inside a PS5.

I’ve built a handful of PCs myself but I’ve never tackled a sleeper build of any kind, let alone with such a unique form factor. Does anybody have any suggestions? I’ll leave some images below to get a sense of what I might be working with.1EAE059B-EBA2-473A-AC39-8365F850A1B3.thumb.jpeg.739c5cf839b5a5934fa6a8ecea818546.jpeg890016DD-F405-4C64-AF6A-FC60D76C8ED0.thumb.jpeg.966d4ce9c5668eab41c9c776d31c1596.jpeg46E91C86-89D6-44B5-AD8F-FD6B3ACC4161.thumb.jpeg.100d019574486a079520ccd1131c8f99.jpegFB8B6D2F-CF09-45B3-8334-F9A3ED4808C5.thumb.jpeg.9e7c9bfb8b6ddd35a49ba9eb11d4470b.jpeg

You could get away with one, if you plan it enough you might have to make some changes to the actual chassis of the PS5 if you are to add that 3070 into it.

My only issue with doing this is the thermals will be atrocious, but again if you plan enough you could probably pull it off

Oh the 3070fe was just a size comparison. I think I might try to find a smaller card or a blower style card and also make some mods to the side cover to allow for ventilation.

My only concern is finding a small enough PSU or a powerful enough external brick.

That's the least of your worries, thermal will be hard to maintain in such a condensed case like that. I'm not worried about the GPU as much as I am the CPU. Yeah you could use a Wraith Spire cooler but with no moving air in the chassis of the PS5 then the CPU will just get hotter and hotter and eventually just over-heat and thermal throttle cause the stock AMD cooler isn't the greatest depending on the chip you choose.

You could get a small power-supply, I do know they exist but the wattage isn't the craziest on them. Maybe around the 400w range. So making a sleeper build with one would be a challenge. You could always just have the PSU sitting outside the chassis and just run the wires through a cut-out you did on the chassis. So you can have a higher wattage but it wouldn't look as good.

So I kinda had a jank solution to assist with airflow with a somewhat negative pressure setup. I might attach one of these cheapo Amazon PS5 coolers at the back to assist with airflow. It’s already made to fit the chassis and it’s USB powered, so I can run an extension to plug it into the rear io of the mobo.93D3C172-CABA-49C3-8261-0BA78700E335.thumb.jpeg.c489c04f211f4e3328690c4e44a5a712.jpeg

That's exhausting air only. You might be able to get away with that, but thermals will still be too high for it to be justified.
