Looking for a hba

Hello guys, 

im planning to make a nas with left over parts ,

4x8gb ddr4 3600mhz corsair vengeance 

amd ryzen 7 3700x

Gigabyte aorus 1080ti

 

so i found a board

it have 8 sata , but i want to expand, 

but all hba i find are 4 ports on pci-e 3.0 x4

but since i have alot hdds lying arround i want to give a 2nd chance,

so i was thinking to get about 16-20  drives

if i use a 8x card on the 4x slot, it would reduce performance in half right ?

Why does your (generally headless) NAS need a 1080Ti?

If you can manage to saturate the bus, yes, but most HDDs won't have near enough throughput for it to matter.

LSI 9207-8i is what I have; 8 SATA ports.

The problem is that most US sellers refuse to ship overseas, let alone across the planet. Plus if they do, shipping to Europe is prohibitly expensive especially as you pay tax (duty) over the US shipping on top of the product. So, if the card is 80 bucks and shipping sets you back another 60, you pay 21% tax/duty over the total of 140 bucks. That's about $30 so in total your 80 dollar card actually costs 170 dollars

I mean, OP doesn't need to buy that exact listing, I was just linking so they could have picture/info, too.

Why ? Bcuz i have no apu, and maby to game on vm ?

I see, thats a 8lane , but the port is 4 lane, and over 8hdds will it even perform well?

HDDs don't have near enough bandwidth to saturate x4, let alone x8.

8 HDDs @ 200MBps = 1.6GBps

PCIe 3.0x4 = ~4GBps

(you'd basically need 8 SATA SSDs running at 100% before beginning to touch performance limits)

But that is on 8 lanes right ? But the bottom slot from the looks of it is 4 lanses, so that means i will get 2GBps right ?
