Adding data to a pre-existing plan on AT&T

I have a question, right now i have a basic phone and i was wondering if i move my sim into an htc 8x that i am buying form a friend do i have to have data added on to my plan. If so what are the prices (I live in the north east in the US) and can i do it if I don't have an upgrade available. Thank You to anyone who replies, I am really not sure about this one.

Your carrier will probably add data to your plan as soon as you put your sim into the 8X. They'll probably give you the cheapest option though, which you should go in and change if you want a reasonable amount of data. You should be able to change your data plan at any time.

I don't know about the other carriers, but on AT&T it's $20 for 300MB and $30 for 3GB.
