Unnecessary or feature?

Why are there 4 memory slots on consumer motherboards when we can ONLY use 2 anyways?

It was a hassle to decide dual channel or quad channel for my first build because the manufacturers page says dual channel compatibility only and some other people are saying quad channel is ok too, I went safe and did dual channel but I'm still curious why in the world do those 2 extra slots exist?

What? Nobody said you can only use 2 slots. If someone did say that then they don't know what they're talking about.
