Win 10 sudden slow down

Go to solution Solved by NeoFriction,

So sorry to hear that your issue isn't fixed. I read some posts on the internet and very few people said that this motherboard thermal throttles my CPU.They changed some settings in the bios.Check out this post:

https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threads/cpu-locked-at-800-mhz-z170a-m7-i7-6700k-thermal-throttling-issue.310207/

Edit:Solved: for anyone that's looking for it, The fix was go bios find the "Intel's Adaptive Thermal Throttling" setting and disable it.

So to start off built this machine back in 2016 i think. it is windows 10 on a ssd Evo from samsung, with a msi gaming z 1070, i5 6600, 32 gig ram corsair rgb vengeance with a z170 mobo from msi.

All of a sudden my pc has been running slow. Havent downloaded any new stuff or gone to random sites. I have done a full deep scan and nothing came out of it. I've swapped my 1070 for a 1060 in my other rig, nothing. Swaped my ram for my back up ram 16g set from crucial, that ticked off my pc so I went back to the 32set. I installed windows on a brand new harddrive to no avail. I've troubleshoot with a win 10 usb, restarted 10 with shift restart. My next step is swapping the i5 for something else if my friend has a back up I could use. Any one reading this have any idea what could be wrong. Or should I back step and re try the ram or new harddrive? Could a monitor be going out and cause a slow down...I'm scrapping the bottom of my knowledge as I'm somewhat new to pc troubleshooting even tho I've been building for years

Might be the going bad SSD, check CrystalDiskInfo maybe? Such slow running PC usually got the storage as the culprit. (Hence, SSD's better than HDD).

Humor me, as you should do.

That's what I thought at first but it's even acting up when I put in my new ssd and unplugged all my extra internal storage. I'll check that thing you mentioned tho just incase

Does your PC get enough power? If a PC doesn't get enough power it can cause it to slow down.

pretty sure it does, i havnt moved it to a new outlet, no upgrades, or swapped my psu. and up until like 3 days ago it was running just fine..but i hadnt even thought to check with a new psu...

If you built your PC in 2016 then try a new PSU.Most PSUs live up to 5 years under normal use but Gaming can shorten it's lifespan.Or try borrowing a PSU from a friend and check if it fixes the issue. If yes then you need a new PSU,if no then something else is the issue.

hmm then i will get a new one ordered and give that a shot. i cant believe i didn't think about a psu being the issue. i do appreciate that ^^ a good psu is cheaper than a new cpu/mobo combo.

Ok so psu didn't fix it. After reinstalling cpuz and afterburner I noticed my cpu is just stuck at 800mhz while genshin is in the background *only game that is on here right now*

I've cleared the bios pulled the battery flipped the slow switch put new paste on the processor for my corsair elite h115...any other ideas. Somewhere I read that the msi z170 m5 could be thermal throttling cpus, and they used a program called throttlestop. Does that sound like an idea?

That actually worked. My game runs smooth, website work properly. Thank you for that. My only question is now it's pegged at 3.3 to 3.5ghz even at idle. Is that safe? Or just sucking power it doesn't need?

Mmm,I think it's safe.Or maybe it's a good thing as it will increase your overall performance in Windows.
