Good evening,

I have a friend who recently purchased a 1TB Samsung 870 evo and is having issues formatting. He went into disk management and initialized the disk as MBR (after getting an io device error 3 times it finally worked) and tried formatting and it gives him an error of "Could not format due to an io device error". He swapped his SATA data cable for a new one and tried a different SATA port. I instructed him through command prompt to diskpart and listed the disks, it shows up, but his other 2 drives are GPT, not MBR, so, thinking that may be causing the issue, I had him tried to convert it to GPT, but got the same error, "Could not perform the operation due to io error".

Is there a BIOS setting blocking these actions? What else can be done? He's contacted me because I'm the friend group's IT guy, but this one has me stumped, especially because I cannot physically get to the machine.

I know for sure it's a Gigabyte Aorus Elite/Master board, pretty sure it's x470.

Thank you,

Soup

All I can say for sure is that GPT and MBR wouldn't matter for these issues hes having. His best bet would be to try the drive in another machine, if it works fine elsewhere then somethings up with his machine, which could be many things (does he have other SATA drives working?). If it has the same issues in another machine then obviously its just faulty and should be RMA'd.

Maybe someone else can chime in also on possibilties.

He did try it in another machine and it gave him no errors when formatting, however when he put it back in his machine it gave him the same io error. His other SSD is a 500GB Crucial MX500 and he has a Crucial 250gb NVMe SSD.

Does anyone know if there is a bios setting that could be affecting this?

I'm kinda stumped on what to suggest next, considering he has another sata ssd working and the samsung works on another machine fine. 😕
