Hi, my brother is currently using my 5 year old desktop PC. I used it for 3 years then it was stored for 2 years after I bought a new one. I bought a brand new SSD & HDD for it and a 2nd hand RX 580(upgraded from GTX 960 2GB).

I'm looking to replace some parts, but since some are quite old I want to ask for suggestions on what to get. He doesn't game too much so not looking to upgrade to anything powerful. I'd like to keep the PSU, GPU and CPU if possible.

Specs

Mobo: MSI H81M-P33

CPU: i5-4690

CPU Cooler: DeepCool GAMMAXX 200T

GPU: Powercolor Red Dragon RX 580 4GB (Mining card with only a single DVI-D connection)

RAM: HyperX Fury 4GB 1866MHz DDR3 x2

HDD: Toshiba DT01ACA100 1TB, Adata SU800 256GB

SSD: Adata SX8200 Pro 1TB, Samsung 860 Evo 250GB

PSU: Seasonic S12II 480w Bronze

Need to replace because USB ports are failing. Devices are disconnecting and reconnecting. One stick of RAM is also faulty. Already did troubleshooting and to no avail. I think the parts are just showing their age. Thank you to everyone who will suggest what parts to get.

It's not an upgrade if you keep the core components the same, are you intending to fix the problems with the PC or actually improve the performance? And also what is your intended budget?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

You're right, used replace instead of upgrade. And can spend $200 - $300 at most.

Well if the goal is to improve the quality of the PC, I would recommend a used motherboard to try to fix the USB problems. A used Z87 or Z97 is a bit expensive, whereas some H87 options might be more budget friendly. I definitely recommend only buying a motherboard that includes the I/O shield as well. Make sure to check the listing descriptions to verify.

Will look into those mobos. Thanks a lot!

There are brand new H87, H81 and B85 motherboards on eBay. Same type of ordeal as the brand new x79 boards, but for consumer LGA 1150.

they’re kinda expensive but a lot of them actually have pretty decent feature sets for being 80-90$, and they’re new so you don’t need to worry about anything being iffy with a used board

otherwise just kinda get whatever is compatible, if I had to say anything specific with haswell it’s that it was gigabytes golden era for motherboards

there really wouldn’t be too much to upgrade here, an i7 4470/4790 would be too expensive to really be worthwhile over upgrading to an entire new modern platform, gpu is fine, psu is meh but adequate

maybe spend the money on games or better peripherals, a nice keyboard and mouse goes a long way

Been checking my country's eBay equivalent and no more brand new boards from that gen unfortunately. Most likely will have to stick to 2nd hand ones.

Actually found a 2nd hand i7-4790k + AsRock Z87 Extreme 6 + 32 GB Corsair DDR3 RAM bundle for roughly $250. Asking what the RAM speed is though.

Also yeah, he's got a decent mouse now and a cheapo but ok quality mechanical keyboard is on the way too. Thanks!
