Questions about external cloud drives

Alright I've been thinking hard on getting one, I'd like to know though are you only able to hook them up via network? Could I have one plugged into another usb device while having it on my network?

 

Also from what I know you're able to leave it connected to your network and can access it via 4g lte from your smartphone?

 

And finally was wondering if some of you could share some could externals, I'm thinking of getting a 2tb one but from what I know you can replace the drives with a bit of modding?
