Using a Second GPU for display outputs

Simple I'm running an RTX 2080 Super with a 9900k. Currently driving 4x LG 4K monitors. Looking to get a 5th 1080p monitor but the 2080S only supports 4 outputs.

 

I can get an output by enabling the iGPU or putting in a spare GTX 1050 I have lying around. But once wallpaper engine starts up GPU Usage soars. Usually what i expect is somewhere between 15-20% GPU Usage when I have all 4 wallpapers going.

And I'm pretty much able to get that when I enable the iGPU or with the 1050 with displays only plugged into the 2080S.

 

But once i try to plug in a 5th display to the iGPU or the GTX 1050, this happens.

GPU Usage for BOTH GPUs soar to about 50% even though there isn't anything extra running and the 5th monitor doesn't even have a wallpaper. Along with that my whole system turns into a choppy mess and is basically unusable until i pause/quit wallpaper engine or unplug the display connected to the iGPU/GTX 1050. The same sorta graph happens with the iGPU just that it reaches about 70% instead.

 

The GTX 1050 doesn't need to compute anything for me, it just needs to act as a display output.

 

Wallpaper Engine is also already set up in both display settings and NVIDIA control panel to use the RTX 2080SUPER

 

If I can get it working properly I'll probably head out and buy a 1650 super to throw in there. (the palit gtx 1050 gets really loud even at idle)

 

Any help will be appreciated was running on NVIDIA drivers from April this year (don't remember the number) and already updated it to 451.67 07/09/2020 with no improvements.

I would suggest putting open gl gpu to the 1050 and maybe put the the pisx gpu to the 1050 as well, not a expert. 

tried that, no difference at all. still watching a very fast slideshow with both GPU usage about 50+%

thing is its only occurring once i plug a display into the GTX 1050, once i unplug it i get RTX2080S usage at low 10s and 1050 at 0%

Strange indeed, I'm doing roughly the same thing as you yet I don't have that issue, could it be a PSU or power management settings issue? just spit balling ideas but maybe try setting power mode to "prefer maximum performance"?

On windows side it has always been set to high performance and no sleep settings etc. I frequently do long renders on this pc (This is my main workstation) so I already had to make sure it won't try to save power etc since long ago.

 

PSU is a Corsair RM850i, I checked it out in iCUE and the power draw with only the RTX2080S is is 148W in 133W out, with the second gpu it was only about 30w higher? Don't exactly remember. I just pulled the card out for now as I can only really test at night and will have to continue with my work tomorrow morning (its 4am already lol).

 

So if anyone has any more ideas I'll try it tomorrow night to see if it works.

huh, I haven't the faintest idea then.... and its not 4 4k monitors ill say that lol, just one asus 2k and 1k to make work easier but same cpu and ram, though i have the older 1070ti card for my main display, however i also use a 1050 to display the image on my second monitor.

Do you also happen to run wallpaper engine? As I tried launching a couple games just now (ATS and RIDE3) and they actually still run fine. Could even still have a YT chrome tab running with no stutters. So I have a slight suspicion it has something to do with the way Wallpaper Engine renders videos which makes windows and NVIDIA very unhappy.

If wallpaper engine really is the culprit i guess i gotta make the decision between my wallpapers or a 5th monitor just to keep my whatsapp/discord/spotify up.

alt+tab isnt very useful when i have about 50 different windows of programs and references open, but well guess i’ll have to make do
