Nighthawk XR500 Setup Problem

Hi, so i recently bought a Nighthawk XR500 so that i could play games where i wasnt lagging from matcbing people so far away. Also the wifi in the house was never great so this would help too. However to setup it need an internet connection via ethernet. The old box (sky internet) connect through the phone line via a microfilter. I cant figure out how to set this up frankly. I even tried do it via my old router but no joy. Can anyone educate me in what i need todo or is there anything else i need to buy to set this up properly.
