Memory issues probably dead but hopefully not.

Hi All

So I bit the bullet and got myself a ram upgrade of eBay (used) Old ram 4x4gb 1600mhz kit (works fine no issues).  New ram “XMS3 — 32GB (4x8GB) DDR3 1333MHz C9 Memory Kit”.

I think this ram is newer than my system, so the motherboard does not have xmp for it (although not sure you get that on 1333mhz kits).  So basically, I am getting intermittent BCOD’s relating to memory.  I have done the obvious, updated the bios, reset to stock (no OC), still no luck.

Therefore, I have undertaken some memory testing with Memtest86, which has taken a bit of time.

I have run Memtest86 test on the kit as a whole and found many (hundreds) memory errors. I have run each stick individually in my system in the same slot as individual ram sticks, 3 out of the 4 sticks do not pass Memtest86 with 1 passing.

Mixing that single passing stick with my existing 4x4gb kit results Memtest86 pass.  If any other 8gb sticks is swapped in there are many errors.  My existing 4x4gb kit has zero errors.

After this testing can rule out other hardware and say there is a defect with 3 out of 4 of the sticks?

Or are there more settings I should be looking for in the bios in case its potatod a voltage or a setting.  I have not done any memory Overclocking before but my only hope is the mothboard is it pushing something to hard and therefore not working.  I did spot it was under volting the ram and have pushed it to 1.5v (up from default) and tried  1.55v with no improvement in ram testing.

Thanks for reading

Probably bad ram, just dont want to have to deal with ebay sellers and memory that posts but is not stable.

The ram upgrade is a stop gap measure (6-9 months), but it might be a sign to upgrade sooner, get a new 12 core cpu and a new gpu.

might be timings? double check configurations, might be a specific incompatibility did you check manufacturers sites to see if it's compatible? qvl list is more than just type, speed, and timings

Does seem like bad ram indeed. Maybe try lowering the speed a bit and see if it helps.

Can you go lower than 1333 the bios oc menus is a pain to use but will try tonight.

Manufacturer does not test everything.  Unlikely to be non compatible as a single stick out of the 4 works.  The issue is there are that many timeings and setting I can't tell if one of them is bs.  Don't have full settings for the memory

yes you can.  seems to work stable at 800 mhz.

check to see if for some reason you have ecc enabled and try to disable

try swapping between ganged and unganged

timings from what I found should be 9-9-9-24 but go with the slowest you find for the rating to test

since it's testing stable at 800 the sticks are probably fine, though odd you don't get xmp profile which it should have

manufacturer might not test everything but they did test yours and you should be compatible
