Rtx cards are the newest line of nvidia graphics card while the gtx 1000 series is the line behind the rtx cards. Rtx cards have a special feature called ray tracing that makes your games lighting effects look better (not in all games, only a select few and it destroys fps) That’s the basic differences.

It depends what cards you are comparing, a rtx 2080 outperforms a gtx 1080 and that goes true for all cards with the same last two numbers rtx 2060,2070,2080 vs gtx 1060,1070,1080 but the real question is, what is your budget for a gpu? Because that is the deciding factor, if you have no budget the best gpu consumer wise is a rtx 2080Ti

GTX and RTX are product lines. The GTX cards are Nvidia's regular GPUs, and the RTX cards have ray tracing, along with some AI features included. Ray tracing isn't widely supported, but it simulates real light in games, making things look way more realistic, at the expense of performance.

There's also AMD's RX line (such as the RX 580, RX 590, 5700, and 5700XT), Vega line (such as Vega 56, Vega 64), and the Radeon VII.

None of AMD's cards currently have ray tracing, but it's rumored that their upcoming cards may support their own ray tracing technology.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W
