If not, how about having another arduino on the receiver end, and plugged in with USB? 

This sounds like it could be possible, but I don't think it would be worth the effort.

Yeah, but I have the hardware sitting around and was thinking if I could make myself something like this.

Probably buying the already made part is the wise choice though.
