Aftermarket CPU Cooler (Help needed)

Hi,

I going to get an aftermarket CPU cooler for my system, but I'm unsure if and how a cooler will fit on my motherboard (keeping the RAM position in mind).

I'm hoping someone can confirm that a Cooler Master Hyper 612 will fit on my MSI 990FXA-GD80 motherboard. If the size of the RAM matters, I'm using Patriot Viper (4 sticks so I can't change slots).

I also want to fit two fans on it and have it blowing to the back (horizontally).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It will fit on your motherboard but it might be blocking the first ram slot.

The 212 is tall and narrow it most likely will not affect your ram

I actually did a review on the 212 EVO if you want to take a look

That's what I'm worrying about. I don't want to remove a stick.

I'll have a look at that one. It's a little lower than the 612, but slightly. It's also narrower which might help. Nice review BTW.

have you considered a closed loop water cooling kit? they totally solve RAM height issues and are not 'that' much more expensive than a good air cooler.

I'm currently trying to decide what I want to get. The only problems I have with water cooling is that the radiators are all 120mm and my case has 140mm fans at the back. I also can't use top mounting because I have 2x 200mm fans on top. I don't mind taking out the 140mm but I'm just trying to avoid it. The other thing bothering me is weight. My case is already kind of heavy and difficult to carry 'cause of it's size, and correct me if I'm wrong, water cooling adds quiet a lot more weight than an air cooler would.

Thanks for all the quick replies.
