upgrading android

Is it really necessary to upgrade your android phone to android pie or can I without fear still use android 8.1? I am asking because I want to buy Nokia 7 plus but I heard it had some problems after upgrading from android 8.1 to 9.

well, you don't technicly have to, as 8.1 is still a well supported system, but I actually got a really nice performence bumb from going from 8.1 to 9 with my mi8
