RAID 5 - drive failed, how to replace?

Cal920c

Hi guys, kinda new to the whole RAID thing,

I have a 9240-8i with 4x Seagate 3TB ST3000DM001 drives in RAID 5.

Drive 3 has failed, and I know which drive it is. My questions are:

Is it as simple as buying a new drive and swapping it in?

The drive isn't even a year old, could I try re-instating it as a unconfigured good and putting it back into the array?

The drive went down when it failed a check or something and the raidcard has marked it a "Unconfigured Bad" therefore my array is running in a "degraded" state.

If anyone can... give me a quick guide on how to add the drive back into the array? If possible, I might as well ask now, how do I or can I expand my array with more drives?

Thanks!

I dont know how exactly works but in theory just replace the bad drive and the array will build itself

maybe you have to check in the raid config..

You just replace the bad drive and the array will either rebuild itself automatically, or you have to go into the RAID Card BIOS, or software (if installed on the OS) and tell it to rebuild. Depends on the RAID.

If you think the drive is ok, take it out. Boot the system. Connect it as an external or non-RAID drive (i.e. in the motherboard's SATA port) and check it with Speedfan or Crystal Disk Info. If the only problem is Reallocated Sectors and Uncorrected sectors, then format the drive (the long one, not the quick one) and check it again. If the only yellow thing is Reallocated Sectors, just stick it back in the array and have it rebuild with that one.

If the error is anything else aside from Reallocated Sectors after the deep format, get a new drive and try to use your system minimally until it arrives. Then pop it in and do as I said above. Either let it rebuild automatically or tell it to in the RAID Card's BIOS or software if it has software.

Edit: FYI, the reason I suggest checking what the error is and deep formatting if it's the uncorrect sector count and the reallocated sector count is because I've had that fix a drive. The Reallocated sector count was still yellow (i.e. it was close to the maximum), but that was a month or so ago, and the drive is still going strong. I keep a spare just in case. I suggest you do the same.

Would anyone know if Seagate warranties those drives for a RAID environment?

Yes, there is no small print against RAIDing them.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

This is NOT the signature you are looking for.

Use the ancient dos text seatools for best results. I wouldnt bother though as the raid card dropped it for a reason.

Who says it was in a raid environment?

Yes, there is no small print against RAIDing them.

You are correct but also see above.

Yeah, that's what I plan to do, who knows how long the RMA is going to take, if it's a dead drive.

This is why I usually recommend buying a extra drive if you need 4 buy 5 so you have one to pop in immediately other wise you have to hunt one down and get it shipped quick or leave the system off or raid card out if you dont have any more redundancy.

it should be here http://goo.gl/XYq8wh to use it you will have to put the controller temporarily in IDE not AHCI. Hmm they only have the graphical one on there. Here it is on my server CD http://goo.gl/We09WA and Floppy http://goo.gl/V3JQfo .

Cool, thanks! I blew out a PSU in my other gaming comp, (corsair AX760i, I was suprised), so i'm going to use some old comp, i'm assuming it works with any comp with SATA ports in IDE mode...

Thanks man that bit of my server is mostly temporary to get files to people who need them quick if you know what I mean. Also the floppy one can be quite usefull and from what i remember is actually easier to convert into a flash drive than the CD one. Either way it does take a bit of work but is nice than CD once setup.

How long did you have that hdd before it failed?

Well, aside from the "re-allocated sector" count being at 120, it hasn't "failed" but it's been maybe only 5 months?

Checking for errors now after I've completely (long) formatted the drive... Will be checking with seatools as soon as I can find a working USB drive or a blank cd...
