  1. The only way to update the client itself is to download the new client from F@H website, uninstall the old client and install the new one. Although unless there is something in the new client that you specifically need (bug fixes, new feature(s), etc), you shouldn't have a need to update it. As far as im aware, the main thing that the F@H would need updating the most is the Folding Core (Core_A7 for cpu and Core_22 for GPU as an example) and that is handled by the client and F@H workstation server automatically. So unless your client is not grabbing those cores for some odd reason, you should be fine with your current install.
  2. As far as im aware, it can help some but it really depends on the current Folding Core and the WU on those cores when it comes to SMT/Hyper-threading. https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=31357#p304984 Basically what you are assuming is correct on the overhead. (Topic thread from F@H forum was about i5 vs i7 and hyper-threading but i dont think it'll be much of a different answer with current Ryzen/Threadripper SMT) Which makes me wonder if F@H has added something to client to prevent users from using the extra spare threads in these high core count cpu's.... Wouldn't put it past them for doing such but i have no proof on that matter. Although it's probable what lexxR mention already is the more likely cause combined with the WU shortage. (Whether is a windows limitation or client, i couldn't tell you).
  3. Well we should define "power hungry low performer". Sure the PS3 is power hungry compared to modern hardware (for the performance) but I would argue that wasn't the case when F@H was using it in 2007. Back then, it was very powerful and surprisingly quite power efficient for the performance it gave. Even compared to the ATI/AMD gpu's F@H was using back then (Nvidia GPU's couldn't fold till about a year after the PS3 client launched). Around 900 to 1,000 PPD on PS3 vs a Radeon HD 3870 typical 1.5K PPD (max of 2k PPD if i remember correctly). It wasn't something to sneeze at. Now if were trying to compare point production of Hardware and Software of 2007 to our current stuff.... That's pretty much comparing apples to potatoes.... Different WU projects (with different base points), different Folding cores, new instruction-sets on new hardware, and most importantly, the use of "Quick Return Bonus" (QRB) that wasn't being using at all during that time, makes a comparison difficult, if not impossible. (QRB wasn't used till 2009/2010 on cpus and 2012/13 for gpu's).
  4. This assumes the WU's on an Android Phone will be the same as a GPU or CPU WU that your desktop/laptop is using. Which is an incorrect assumption to make. The F@H group has historically tailored made WU's and Folding Cores to work on the targeted hardware. So if the hardware isn't as capable as a modern X86 cpu or gpu, then the WU's are scaled back in either size or complexity to best fit the hardware. (or if the hardware had unique properties that F@H could benefit from, then those cores and WU's were design to use it). Folding was possible on both PlayStation 3 and even the hardware in our subject, Android Phones, in the past but sony drop support for both of them and F@H didn't take up the task to maintain it themselves (Sony was the one that created and maintained the app on the phone). https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sonymobile.androidapp.gridcomputing&hl=en https://foldingforum.org/viewforum.php?f=100 And thats probably the bigger issue than "it'll be to slow". The issue is that F@H Group needs to support it and create Cores and WU's to do it. Something that currently, doesn't seem to be in the cards... (certainly with the Covid-19 pandemic going on). Also as a little history note, GPU folding on desktop/laptop used be the same way when it came to WU's and Cores. If you had an Nvidia Card, you ran different WU's and Cores than an AMD/ATI card. It wasn't until the summer of 2013 when Core 17 was released that AMD/ATI & Nvidia Cards could process the same WU's https://foldingathome.org/2013/06/29/welcome-to-fahcore-17-2/
  5. Other than you'll have access to more (and different types of) WU's. Not really. Beta and Advance are tags to get WU's not in normal circulation yet due to their early nature. Beta WU's should be self explanatory while advance WU's are WU's that have exit beta but still need further tests to be sure there's no problems. (Kind of like early access or something like that). Also to note, If you have Issue with advance WU's, you can hop on F@H support forum (not LTT forum) and discuss your issues about the WU. (Like it's failing at a certain step or %). Beta WU however, you will not get support unless your a Beta User on F@H forum. So it's highly recommend not to run the Beta flag unless your a beta member. https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=8
  6. There's no native app that im aware of that will allow you to control the F@H client directly. The next best alternative I can give you is to use remote connection software like Team Viewer or Parsec that can allow you to control your PC. (Software will have to be installed on Desktop and Android phone.) Parsec: https://parsecgaming.com/ Team Viewer: https://www.teamviewer.com/en-us/
  7. Sadly, not really. https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=32735#p314395 https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=32735&start=45#p316346 Basically, you would need a server and internet connection like what Linus has at minimum to handle what F@H needs. Also these servers need to be validated to make sure the science they're sending and receiving is not being messed up by the servers (reason why it took several days for Linus server to start sending work). This also wouldn't address the other issue F@H been having (although been improving) that i mention earlier about (the number of WU's). If servers dont have WU's for your computer, then no amount of servers will fix that issue and that something only the F@H group can do.
  8. I wouldn't expect linus server to fix the issue. 20x demand on the F@H network is not something that a single server will fix. It'll help for sure however. From 10k-15k active users "pre-covid-19" to 160k+ active users currently generates a lot of traffic. (think F@H group are about to have 6 to 8 servers coming online soon from various people/orginizations). We also need F@H group to keep the servers full with WU's to give to us which has been a chore for them. Think i read somewhere on the support forum that they been adding like 90k WU's per hour (or something like that) just have people machines do something (cant find source for it but i'll put it here if i find it again). This is just that unprecedented of a demand that their system just cant handle it (nor could of been predicted). Anyways, if you're interested in F@H servers, you can see which servers are running here. https://apps.foldingathome.org/serverstats and just seen linus server have CPU (A7 core) WU's on that stat page. 168.245.198.125linus1.foldingathome.orgWS9.6jake10,800.00/hr00YesAssign10,9140GRO_A765.74TiB35 minutes2020-03-29T04:28:55Z
  9. As a old friend to the Linus Tech Tips F@H team, I just wanted to say thank you to all the people coming together to fight for a common cause. It's nice to see that a lot of the ground work the old timers laid out back in January 2013 still holds to this day. I remember @Whaler_99 "working his butt off" getting this team up and running and assisting everyone that need it. It doesn't feel like it was that long ago but wow, look how much you guys (as the LTT team) have grown. From a mere 160 active folders (April 2013) when a few of you guys join in on your very first F@H Competition (The Chimp Challenge with overclockers.com, RIP....) to the current Covid-19 outbreak and competition with 33K+ Active users (and growing). (16:00 mins into the video for F@H stuff) 7 years after starting, You guys are now the titans of the F@H world that EVGA and [H]ardOCP once was when this team started. Well.... Keep it up all you crazy folders! Even after we beat down covid-19, there will still be other stuff we need to cure. Remember, at the end of the day, Science Win when you fold! Also congratulations to reaching 1 Billion Points per Day (Well it's 971M PPD atm..... but you'll be there shortly). WTF! (old folding slang for "WAY TO FOLD!")
  10. Well, nice to see that someone still doing the F@H news around here. Finally after all this time, I've finally manage to comeback around to this forum and see what all has change. And boy has it changed! New faces, old one that are still kicking, and even mods that I remember as regular members! For those that never met me before: Anyways..... I was just about to come over and type something up about that since I haven't done one in forever (of course it's been a few days late . i haven't been paying attention) but you already had that covered. Maybe now I'll stick around for a bit and actually be useful.
  11. Eoc stats went down for maintenance for those few days to clean up the the huge history table. http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/ That why there were no point updates for those days and the huge spike on the 9th is combining points from day 6 though 9.
  12. In my opinion? Overall not really..... but if you just have it and it just laying around, might as well utilize the power. So while the 210 uses such little amount of power to generate 1k ppd..... the main problem I have with it is F@H will be dropping support *soon for these cards. Core 11 and 15 WU's that these cards used to run are slowly eroding away as core 17 comes along and takes it's place. Core 17 how ever, will not fold on any gpu below Fermi (so Geforce 8, 9, and 200 series are on the chopping block) and will not fold on cards below AMD/ATI Radeon HD 5000 series. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/73898-fh-news-nov-8-changes-in-core17-update-and-move-to-full-fah/ So it's your call on if you want to fold on it as much as you can till support finally drops in a few months or not bothering at all. * Stanford/F@H never gives an ETA (except on rare occasions) on just about anything. Although they will say "soon" when something will be dropping support or will be adding/launching something new. So "soon" in F@H terms could mean a few days or it could mean 6 months. (Haven't seen a "soon" reach a year yet but I could be proven wrong.)
  13. Sorry I didn't respond back yesterday, was at the Antietam National Battlefield yesterday and was worn out from all the walking and site-seeing yesterday. (BTW, if your in the US. Till the end of Monday, all US national parks are free admission. http://home.nps.gov/news/release.htm?id=1531) Anyways, to your problem. Only running at 50% on a HT P4? Sounds like your running on a single core cpu slot instead instead of a multi-thread slot. I'll copy part of my guide (that I help made on my other team) that will help you change it. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/34683-12-toms-hardware-folding-home-team-guide-testing#1147115 You will need to open your Client Control and not the web client to change the setting(s). Just change that "-1" (or what ever it says) to "2". This should fix the issue. Now the PPD figures, When my P4 2.8GHz was still working back in the day on SMP client, it was able to get about 400 PPD. That was without gpu folding running at the same time (Geforce 6200 could not run F@H as it didn't have cuda cores). Pic and specs of the old system in my build log while I was upgrading to my Core I7 machine. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/7341-family-system-rebuild-warning-very-high-res-photos/ (Warning: high res photo's. It might take a moment to load all the pics in.) [spoiler=]SMP Client: is an old client that you were force to use if you wanted to run on multiple threads/cores at the same time. This was before the V7 client that we're using now that includes everything into 1 client. Of course that machine died in Oct. 2010 and this is Nov 2013 so you may get less PPD now or more. (unlikely more but you never know.) Hope this fixes your issue
