I'm trying to set up some VMs using Hyper-V on my personal computer running Windows 11. I'm able to create VMs but whenever I start and try to connect to them, I get a problem saying I'm unable to connect, seemingly after timing out the attempt. This happens regardless of VM OS, and started when I was running Windows 10. I haven't been able to create a VM that works either using quick create or making one more involvedly. I suspect that this is network-related somehow, as I was able to connect to a VM a single time when I started trying to do this, but it cut off my host's network connection.

I recently built my own server and here are how the server is currently setup. Proxmox is the hypervisor. Unraid is running as a VM under Proxmox. Windows 11 runs as a VM under Proxmox, with Plex and other games installed. I did passthrough a 4060ti (its the only one that can fit into my case so please don't roast me for my choice) to the windows 11 VM hoping plex will use it for transcoding. I found that plex is able to transcode if I watch the content on the windows 11 VM but cannot transcode if I am watching from another machine. At first I thought it was because I did not check the primary GPU box in the PCI tab but it still does not work after I enabled it. My guess is the windows 11 network is used up receiving video data from the unraid VM through Proxmox networking. Therefore chocking plex's ability to send data out to the internet. I am also thinking about getting another ethernet to USB adapter and passing that into the Windows 11 VM, but I am unsure if this is the actual issue. Are there any other things I should check? I set everything up following this article. .

I am currently trying to network together 3 virtual machines running in virtual box. One is the latest version of ubuntu server, another is a windows 11 VM and I want to connect them both to VyOS. My main problem is that VyOS can't seem to connect to the internet. I have tried to ping 8.8.8.8 but it always says network unreachable. When trying to network the machines to each other I can't since VyOS is not getting an ipv4 address only ipv6. I believe this was causing problems when I was setting a specific route and needed a return ip. This is for an assignment in my cyber security networking class and are supposed to replicate the model in the image. We are supposed to use internal networks on the ubuntu server and windows machine and then a nat network with 2 matching internal networks for the other vms. I have tried just about everything but for the life of me I cannot get VyOS to get a ping and because it's not connecting properly I have a feeling that is what is causing issues with the rest of the assignment for me. I tried changing VyOS and the ubuntu server to just have a nat network attached the same as how I have my Kali machine set up but even then with only one adapter neither of the machines would connect and always returned the network is unreachable error. When I reached out to my professor about VyOS not having an ipv4 address he just asked me what it should be and wont tell me anything else. I know that somehow it has something to do with the .1 on each side of the diagram. I am pretty new to this level of networking so I don't understand a lot but I have been stuck on this assignment all week and this is my last resort.

Sup guys I have some problems with zfs on unraid. Plan A I wanted an all in 1 Solution with zfs on unraid 3x4tb raidz1. Plex, Steamlink/Moonlight, Vms, Docker, Backups and few game server + Ts3 in one pool. But that’s not how things work on unraid right? Plan B Instead of the raid Controller (9211 8i) i could buy another 4tb Wd red and make it a raid 10. So I won’t blow my budget and have good performance. Would That solve my problem with zfs. I need decent read/write speeds for 4K streams up to 50-70 MB/ps. To not bottleneck my other vm/docker etc, I would like some fast raid/zfs solution with backup. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can do this. -Im completely new to server stuff, unraid and everything around it. My Parts -2x Intel Xeon e5 2670v1 -Supermicro X9DRL-iF -4x 8gb 12800e -Lsi 9211 8i -3x4tb wd red efrx -Gtx 770

Heyy everyone, Here's the deal, I got a Threadripper 3960x coupled with 128G of ram on a Zenith II Extreme with a RTX2080. I'm a software developer and I don't have much patience nor skill on the hardware/configuration side of things but what I wanted for quite some time now was to make install Unraid or Proxmox or something like it on my machine as a base operating system and then run maybe three VM's for different stuff, for example, windows for gaming (not heavy gaming) and a couple of linux VM's for work, like 1 linux for 'home work' and another one for actual company work. I don't think I wanna run more then like... 2 VM's at the same time, but I which I could use the same peripherals and screens for all VM's and just switch between them. Realistically speaking, I guess I don't need graphics card for the linux since I don't play on it, it's just code... but the windows would need since it's... the gaming side With my "idea" explained, here are were my doubt's begin... Since I use 2x 27'' screens on DP and 2x 1070p screens 1 on DP and 1 on HDMI (I was looking into upgrading to 2x 49'' to reduce the number of ports and cables ), to connect all this screens to the machine I need a graphics card that can handle it right? or are there any other ways or tricks to do it? Also, I've researched about Graphics card allocation for VM's and from my understanding I need to allocate the entire Graphics card to a VM and I cannot 'split-it' across multiple VM's, witch would mean I had to buy another Graphics card for the linux VM's I guess... but, then my questions begin, does this mean I have to keep switching physically the monitor cable's between the two graphics cards?????? Also, how would I do the switching of the keyboard between the two VM's ? mouse would be fine since I have the MX Master 3 and it has support for up to 3 different machine easily... So, what I wanted here was... I'm I day dreaming and I simply cannot achieve what I want? or do you guys have some answers and ideas for me? Thanks in advance!

Hi All! I would love some advice regarding my home lab setup. Below is my current hardware and some features and functions I would like my home lab data center to accomplish! I have 3 Dell PowerEdge r710 and 1 Dell PowerEdge r410 a few of the servers have all HHD's and a few have SSD's. All except the r410 have RAID PERC controllers. One r710 has a Nvidia GT 1030. I also run a Mac OS server with an external RAID 5 hard drive using SMB for a file share. This is my main File share server and it gets the job done but it is less than ideal when I have all of these servers. I have yet to transfer all the data from the Mac server to one of my PowerEdge machines because of a lack of stability in my home lab "data center" setup. I have been playing around with Proxmox and setting up my home lab "datacenter" and experimenting with all the stuff you can do with hypervisors and servers. Everything that I have set up has not stuck or has been inadequate lacking a main feature or function that I'm looking for in my ideal home lab. That leads me to the functionality that I am looking for. For starters, a major requirement is running a hypervisor. Proxmox was recommended to me but I'm willing to learn something else if given a good enough reason. A major requirement is to passthrough all my GPU's to my VM's. I also need hot-swap capabilities for my storage because I can't afford to fill up all my r710's currently. I am willing to go to a software-defined storage model instead of utilizing PERC controllers. I would also like the ability to run storage pools and resource pools. In an ideal world, I also would like to tie the Mac Server into the mix using this storage as extra probably backup capacity. (every time I have tried to SMB connect it to Proxmox it fails.) Ideally, I also have some sort of replication that is occurring for redundancies. Can someone guide me in the right direction to accomplish these requirements? Am I using the wrong hypervisor? Do I need to get rid of the PERC controllers? What is the best way to configure these? I look forward to hearing the communities opinion and advice. Thanks in advance! ~Googs55

I am looking to build my first NAS/ Server with a AMD 3600x that I am to retire from my main PC shortly due to an upgrade. My goals are to have a NAS with 4x 8-12gb HDDs for storage and to be able to have headroom to be able to get my first experience with VMs, containers, docker etc. Possibly looking to run Proxmox and FreeNas. I feel like I have a basic understanding of the requirements from longtime lurking and just having a general interest in this type of field for quite a few years but up until this point not having the finances to try it first hand. My question would be around SSD and NVME requirements. What would be a proportional (to the 3600x although with the AM4 CPUs only going to fall in price, I would like a little headroom to upgrade in the future) set up to enable good caching and responsive VMs? I feel this is where my knowledge falls short. Would it be worth buying a motherboard with two NVME slots and if so what best to utilize them for? I understand SSDs would be the best place to store the VMs? Many thanks for any assistance you may be able to offer.

Hey, I am on the verge of making a computer that can 1. Run two Virtual Machines at the same time. and 2. One will be Mac, one will be Windows 10. This project is going to be quite costly, and I need help on a few things before I get to buying parts and potentially losing money. These are the parts that I am going to use for this machine (hopefully they're all easy to understand what they're used for), its a little on the budget side, but thats because I dont want to spend all of my money, It would be great if it was <2500 USD. The way this machine is going to work is my host system Linux Manjaro is going to run MacOS and Windows10. I wish they could all be on at the same time, but I figured out that its better to just turn one (guest) on and the other (guest) off when using them. My first of many questions is How do I safely make one graphics card exclusive to a specific vm? I don't want to screw anything up by trying to use a graphics card on both VMS. So how will I keep them exclusive? Will the host just yoink my stronger graphics cards? because im thinking of either getting a really crappy one (or the integrated one) for the host to run on and I dont know if it will work or not. Will I need to get better components? Because I'm not sure if what Im going to get is capable for this amount of vm weirdness. How do I pass two graphics cards through to two different Vms? I haven't seen anything myself from scouring the web, and I really need help when it comes to that. Do I need more cores? I heard cores are very important to vms but i think a Ryzen 7 3700x is good, im thinking of switching it to an intel i7 9700k or maybe upgrading, I still dont know. Do I need a better motherboard and case? Ive been pretty much guessing if one goes with the other, because im not an experienced builder by any means. The Mac VM is going to be for Photo/Video editing and the Windows VM is going to be for gaming. How will I evenly allocate certain things to each system without forgetting anything? For example, on the Mac, Heavy rendering and the windows will be doing doing not too hardcore gaming, just things like minecraft, csgo, rocket league. Do I need better parts to get the best experience on each? General question, What is a headless host? what does that do? will it help? Final question. Ive been thinking you need things like 3 mice and 3 keyboards for each vm, is that true? I dont know if there's a way to just have one and move it between each vm or at least two and cycle the second pair between Mac and windows.

I would need a PC in a case that can handle multiple VMs 10+ with capabilities for running all the VM's at once none stop. (ATX or EATX?) budget is 2500 to 3000 going to be running multiple versions of windows\Linux\Mac Going to be hosting Games - Players very from 10 - 100 (some VMS would host more than others) Thanks guys

Hello, So I have been working on / building computers for 20 years now. (Damn, I am old that I think about it ). I have been wanting build my own NAS for A bit, waited for A good deal on some older hardware from ebay, craigslist, backpage ect ect. I got A epic deal on A HP ML350 G6 ( 2x Xeon E5620 2.4ghz, 144gb ECC DDR3, 2x 200GB SAS SSDs, 2x 300GB 10k SAS HDD, and LSI 9211-8i ) all for $240.00 shipping included. I have had it for 3months with on issues & adding more hardware and testing different VM software. (Windows 10 with VirtualBox) , Hyper V, ESXi ). Now it time to give unRAID A go . All hardware I have to work with. 2x Xeon 2.4Ghz 4c/8t (16 threads total) [ Should note I will be changing these to X5670s 2.93Ghz 6c/12t ea = 24t total) 144gb ECC DDR3 1333MHZ (18 x 8GB) HP P410i (built in Raid Controller W/BBU and 512Mb Cache) [ Using Raid 1 for Host install & VM OS for some things] Intel Quad NIC PCIe x4 card LSI 9211-8i (IT Mode /P16) LSI 9211-8i (IT Mode /P20) [This one is for pass threw] Nvida GT 730 4gb 3x Seagate Constellation ES.3 3TB 7200/128 NAS Drives 1x ADATA SU800 128GB 3D-NAND ( NAS Cache ) 2x HP 200GB SAS SSDs (Not sure if I will use) 2x HP 300GB 10k HDD (Not sure if I will use) 4x SanDisk 32gb Msata SSD W/ 2.5 Adapters 2x SanDisk 16gb Msata SSD W/ 2.5 Adapters And waiting on A 4port USB 3.0 controller to show up ... MIA (house is wired with Cat 5/6 and have Access Points already) What I want from all of this NAS / PFsens Router / Windows 10 VM for streaming to A TV Via SteamLink or NZXT Doko) (Side note the Doko Crops and steamlink has alot more options but starts in big pic mode, more then likely will use steam links) Once I upgrade the CPUs, I would like to add 2x more VMs for Windows 10. One will be Another TV steram and the other will be for Team Viewer. Goals with the Win10 VMs .. I would like to Project Computers (VMs) to TVs ( and only TVs) in my house for my parents ( think Steam link is the best choice for this ) the 3rd Windows VM will be accessed threw Team Viewer / Windows Remote. This will be my Net surf VM. (right now on my main rig , I run Ubuntu threw A Virtualbox and keep that way from any of my accounts.) Once set up the server will be set aside in A room of its own. What I know so far. I HATE Hyper V .. Yuk Virtualbox I have used for years, know it well but it is limited. I can stream windows 10 VMs TV smoothly with 1GPU ESXi 6.5 only been using it for 2 weeks. Overall I like it, however the Documentation / help videos for 6.5 are not that common, seems to be alot of pre 6.5 and get people to reply to you for help lacking. unRAID ... Going to start with its try this weekend. What I dont like is its NAS RAID System. Questions about unraid 1) Will this be do able with unraid. 2) I dont like UnRAID NAS vs FreeNAS RAID. Could I install A VM with FreeNAS ? Will need to pass threw one of the LSI controllers. 3) Can I split the GPU Memory use per VM (Non PassThrew) or will I need A GPU per windows VM. These VMs will only be used for Streaming to TVs / Comps and Net surfing / Youtube at most. NO GAMING ! By Streaming the VMs to TV I will save a lot of space and keep people out of my space. 1 SFF Desktop still needs A screen/ keyboard and desk of its own. Putting VMs on the TVs would be .... epic ? EDIT (SHOULD NOTE, the NAS will be used for PLEX and HDhomerun DVR) this is its main use. unRIAD is not supported by HDhomerun but freeNAS is . )

So I'm looking for a bit of buying/setup advise, Currently I have an old desktop that's just running some crap on it such as plex, IP cams, ftp server, nas, backup server etc the usual really. This desktop is getting old and clunky and I've always liked the idea of VMs. I have a little experience with Hyper V and kind of know my way around it so I'd like to setup a tower server at home and create a small VM for each of those uses I listed earlier. Now this isn't meant to be some top wack thing I literally want something to tinker with and that is going to function better than a 10 year old desktop machine. I'd like to just put a couple of hard drives and an SSD into a tower server and run some VMs on Hyper-v in Windows server 2012 I've been looking at some refurbished items online (like I said it's just for a bit of tinkering so I'm not going to buying brand new unless there's an amazing deal) and I've come across this and other similar machines: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dell-PowerEdge-T710-2x-E5620-48GB-PercH700-256-2x-1100WPS-16SFF-DVD-Tower-Server-/282277265531?hash=item41b909407b:g:YDEAAOSwo4pYQVOj Would something like this do the trick for what I want to do or it is overkill/underpowered? I appreciate any advise

Google Compute Engine now has machine types with 96 vCPUs and 624GB of memory
Guest posted a topic in Tech News
Just yesterday (or 10/5/17 if you're a latecomer), Google announced that it is now allowing VM configurations with up to 96 vCPUs and 624GB of memory for its own Compute Engine machine types on their cloud platform. This is a pretty sizable increase over what they offered in March, with VM configs of 64 cores and 465GB of ram. (3) And if the previous options are still not enough and you happen to have workloads compatible with what is mentioned above, you now have even greater options to use your compute budget. Well, you have a beta to try it out and there are even greater offerings coming someday, somewhere... Update 1: Google Cloud Compute will allow you to sign up for a one year trial with $300 of credit (Annual not monthly) if you want to play around try it out. The downside is that during the trial, you can only make VMs with up to 8 cores and 52GB of ram. This configuration is estimated at $345.73/month if that gives you a better indicator of how much the full fat 96 core will cost. What are your thoughts on this and will you end up using it? Sources: (Google) (Tech Crunch 1) (Tech Crunch 2) This is my first tech news and reviews topic so if there are mistakes, please do say so. This post is also compliant with night theme.- 11 replies

Today we were doing a new firewall install, the old firewall is a cisco ASA 5510 that was going to be replaced by a Sonicwall TZ 400(This was happening at 2 locations, the main office and the Colo). The install was a bust and we were switching back to the Cisco, now upon switching back we cannot get virtual machines at the Colo to work, their office is up and running without issue, or any computer to use a couple IP addresses. Example LAN IP:192.168.0.10255.255.255.0192.168.0.1(it doesn't matter what the DNS is set to whether it is a public google/xfinity or to a DNS server that's local)The systems cannot reach the outside network whatsoeverWe have tried rebooting all network equipmenttried running netsh winsock resetrebooting systems multiple timesdestroying VM Switch adapter and recreatinginvestigated Cisco Firewall and no rules are in place stopping it.The Cisco did show that from the inside out it is fine, but from outside in (Google dns to local ip) fails and defaults to the basic deny rule.I have exhausted every resource I have and I am just short of going and sacrificing live chickens to the IT gods. Please someone save me from this nightmare.

I am starting to look into getting a used rack mount enterprise grade server. I am new to this realm of hardware and I am not sure what servers would be good choices or not. I plane to use it for VMs and a Plex server. I want it to have many cores (12 or more) and support for about 64GB of DDR3 RAM. I need to have room for drive expansion beyond the few multi TB drives I have. Non-proprietary connectors and psus would be ideal. I would appreciate any recommendations of what servers to look at or even building my own rack mount system.

I have been wondering for a while and today while watching 2 gamers 1 CPU it occured to me again. Is it possible to run 2 VM's on 1 monitor kinda like split screen gaming i.e. top half is one VM and bottom half is another aside from it making an interesting video, I would be interested to know if someone could make themselves a setup to play local split-screen multiplayer on games that don't support it, if so how? Thoughts, comments and ideas are appreciated.

I have a need to run several machines with each being connected to its own separate Wifi connection. ( I have several mobile hot spots configured so each machines has a separate external Ip) It occurred to me that I could run all these machine in their own Vm and then just have them all running on one large monitor, Only trouble is I can not work out how to configure wireless access so each Vm has its own access to each of the Hot spots, I have little knowledge of Vms and networking and it would appear that I can not have ONE wifi usb adapter and use that one adapter for each of the vms, surely this doesnt mean I have to have loads of wifi adapters plugged in to the host to accommodate each of the Vms...does it .?? Any advice would be appreciated, I am running Oracle Virtual Box. Cheers Chris

Hey all, so I need help with a project my wife's parents are looking at doing. In short, they are building a new home and want the following: IP cameras inside and out (wired) - at least 10 Remote door-unlock after viewing camera At least 2x wired ethernet ports in each room (lets say 10 rooms) Ability to view cameras from tablet + wall-mount touch-screen NAS to store everything they have, including movies and TV shows (at least 40TB usable space) PLEX server to watch their stuff, anywhere in the house + while on the move NVR to store / manage IP camera feeds Ability to have home-automation in the future (I don't know about this stuff) I'm meeting with them next week to get their actual requirements, but so far I'm thinking I'll need the following (and help with: PoE managed switch for IP cameras (24 port cat6) - but which one? IP cameras - but which ones? I don't want to pay any monthly fees / use their online solution NVR software - maybe ZoneMinder? NAS - but which one? Managed switch for home network (24 port cat6a) - but which one? Router - but which one? Patch panels - one for cat6 and one for cat6a - Ideally feed-through as opposed to punch-down 18RU wall-mount rack - but which one? 1RU rack-mount server (maybe an old DL360 G8?) - no idea about server grade hardware / software though Hypervisor - proxmox? Ability to have RAID 6 on 1RU server, or something so I can hot-swap in HDDs when they fail Touch-screen tablet thingy for use in kitchen to view stuff Other things i've not yet thought of The overarching aspects are: No paying monthly fees to anyone All OpenSource if possible Easy to maintain - i'll do the install and config and then hopefully annual maintenance only :) Cheap, but good quality stuff is more important I'm hoping people here can help me shape what I need to do. Thank you if you're able to assist :)

Sorry I hope I am posting this correctly on your site. I got a very interesting question for you guys. I don't have the parts to test this currently but... can you run sli in separate pairs and pass those pairs of two cards threw to vms? Basically use a motherboard like the X99-E-10G WS or the X99-WS/IPMI and then custome water cool 4 gpus running in 2 card sli configurations. Would that work? I know this motherboard supports 2, 3, and 4 way sli but.. I don't know if it will actually support 2 separate 2 way sli configurations. And I chose these motherboards for an example because they give each gpu more pcie band with rather then a board like the ASUS B250 MINING because eventhough you have the ability to give the cards more room. It really was not designed for SLI or cards working together. It was designed for each separate card to have a problem for it to process on its own. And the other problem would be PCIE risers and bandwidth of the CPU because wats the point of doing this if the cards don't have 16x or 8x instead of a lousy 4x. So I really need your help linus to help me test this. Please make a vidoe.

Hey everyone, I've been a long time fan of Linus Tech Tips and have in the past used this forum to answer a lot of technical questions so if like to start off with thank you guys for that. So i'm in a club at my college and we want to build a server and experiment with it. We want it to be decently powerful as we need a shop computer upgrade anyway. We haven't ordered anything yet but we have picked out a ryzen 5 2600 and a B-450 motherboard with 8GB of ram and a 600w power-supply. We want to rack mount and ideally the rack would have room for expand ability in the future. Any suggestions from the more knowledgeable on here any advice would be appreciated. Thank you, Michael Nezz

Is the new 2.5 gig network cards are a better alt for diskless workstations for cheap? or should we ask linus for a video we rather didn't ask for? can it handle multi-response times like a 10gig emulex cards or no? (its for future proofing Internet Cafes when it comes to network arrays or illustrators who want a clean solutions)

Hey guys, I'm currently looking into a new CPU (mostly wanna have around 6 VMS up for labs and gaming), my current budget is $600 bucks for the CPU. I currently own an i7 4790k but i feel like it struggles with both VMS and CPU intensive games (a.k.a ubisoft games). I'm torn between 1950x, i9 9900k or a simpler option i7 8700k (maybe i7 9700k ? haha) Would appreciate any input.

Hi, so I have CentOS and Kali Linux as VMs on Virtual Box, they were working fine until I recently cleared the CMOS because of an issue with overclocking, since then the virtual machines won't start even though I have virtualization enabled in bios it shows this message: (VT-x is disabled in the BIOS for all CPU modes (VERR_VMX_MSR_ALL_VMX_DISABLED)), Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005). I tried looking the code up but all I found was the same fix which is to turn on virtualization in the bios. Specs: CPU: i5 3570K MOBO: Asus P8Z77-V (Bios version: 1805) Ram: Kingston HyperX Fury 8GB DDR3 1600MHz CL10 Software info: Virtual Box Version: 5.2.24 Windows 10 Pro 10.0.17134 Build 17134 Thanks in advance.

I've been watching LMG on youtube for a few years now and I see a lot of videos of his server rack and trying things such as 8 (or 10) gamers 1 CPU but what I've been waiting to watch and what doesn't really have very many (not-so-advanced proof) tutorials online is a cluster server or HPC. From the research I've done, HPC requires some kind of permit to build (at least a permanent build) and the most stable way to accomplish HPC is to use a Linux Host and VM Windows. It would be pretty sick to see Windows server peak at it's limitations as mentioned on Wiki. I know it's an outdated version of windows but it was the latest I could find with some type of limitations. Makes me wonder if the newer versions could support more than the previous versions... (possible video) It could also be a way to make use of your unnecessary 10Gbps Internet speeds. Maybe after you're finished, you could get that permit and sell usage time for people to do some crazy amount of number crunching for extra cheddar. Anyway, I've tried a few times but maybe I'm just thinking a cluster acts as 1 computer... I mean surely an IT guy wouldn't want to remote into each node if there is hundreds or thousands of nodes. Is it possible to get thousands of nodes to share memory and have basically a HDD or SSD for folders (which would be kind of an obvious solution for windows if there are more drives than the amount of letters in the alphabet) A video of windows limitations and what happens if you exceed them... What could go wrong... Everything will be fine... you have plenty of... well I'm pretty sure you'll have to order a bunch of the same model and sizes of things since there are a lot of things that have to be identical in clusters... Well there's my idea for a video. Hope the team accepts the challenge even if it isn't on a large scale to exceed windows limitations.

config advice House storage server & Minecraft server
Gallu posted a topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Hello everyone! Recently I begun to think about building a home server for storage, media server and a Minecraft server instance for me and friends. I thought about going for 5 terabytes (one for each member of the family + 1 shared), and using old server parts from ebay for the build itself. What are your recommendations? Have you ever built a used server off of ebay? Furthermore, for accomodating all the functions, I need to have some VMs, which is the best method right now, and can you link some tutorials (Maybe Linus has done it and i don't know)? Thank you very much
