  1. TLDR; I'm looking to build a server to run 4 Windows VM and RDP in via thinclients. How do I license each Windows 10 install on the VM's? I'm trying to draw up a proof of concept for a small business of my family member. They have recently had an increase in employment and are struggling to get suitable laptops/desktops for each employee. Currently there are 2 Offices in different locations, 4 employee's per office. The 1st Office opened has 4 Desktops with Intel Dual Cores (unsure of exact model), 8Gb RAM. The newest office currently only has 2 laptops one of which being a private one only my family member can access. All Office work is administration, so Office apps and more intensive above that use case. I dabble with homelab virtualization projects and believe that the growing needs of this business would be perfect for a server VM configuration. I firstly plan to only deploy a single 12 or 16 Core server at the first office and moving the existing desktops to the new office. I plan on buying some older intel xeon workstation (preferably with 2 sockets) so that I can upgrade to more cores in future if we need them. I'll use ESXi to manage and create the, currently, 4 VM's and plan to either ebay some refurb'd thinclients or use WTWare on some Raspberry Pi's to use as thinclients to RDP to server. The one issue I am currently struggling with, with homelab i just create a VM for Windows 10 Pro and do license it because its a throwaway VM Project, in a business I'd have to license each VM. How would I go about doing this? I'm so confused by the Windows Server Licensing and this appears to be a replacement for VMWare ESXi, it is also very expensive and appears to only cover 2 Window Pro Vm's? Feel free to share any other information you think i may have missed in all this too? Added note, I do plan on eventually added a VPN to the server so that i could also use it to RDP from the 2nd Office as employee numbers grow. As it currently stands im more interested in replacing the 4 Desktops in Office 1 with VM's that have 3 cores each and 8Gb RAM each with possible expansion in future by making everyone dual core or upgrading CPU's down the line. BTW by dual core i mean 4 vCore as in 2 physical 4 threads.

Hello everyone, To get some context, here's the hardware and detailed on my plan for the next month trying to upgrade my current machine : Be aware that I didn't try anything yet, and all this work is just preemptive research to see if my goal is achievable. To summarise, I'm going to be upgrading my GPU from a 1070 to a 2070s. Since I won't be needing the 1070 anymore (plan is to use the old stuff like cpu, ram and mb for an HTPC) I'd like to investigate the possibility of creating a headless VM with GPU passthrough to the 1070 so that my friend can play remotely on it while I'm still using the computer. I've done some initial homework and here's the checklist that I'm keeping : Even if there's some hack associated with it, Parsec (the gaming remote software I'll be using for the VM) does support headless machine The platform I'll be upgrading to (AMD ryzen 3rd gen and the MSI x570 motherboard) support AMD-V for hardware virtualisation I'm going from 16 to 32Gb of ram to account for the VM overhead and having two systems at the same time My storage solution might need some revision, but I think I might get away with what I have considering the headless VM will be used to play a verry limited amount of game (<100GB of game + OS) My Current PSU of 600W might be enough, but I'll be upgrading to something else to avoid getting poor power efficiency, especially with the Bronze one I have atm. I do have access to 2 different key of windows 10 I got access to a cheap laptop if I ever have to setup or use an hypervisor My desktop machine is wired to simplify the setup Nothing will be plugged into the 1070 in normal use, but I do have access to a old tv that I can use for debugging or setup purposes I also have some requirement on what I want to achieve : I want both my main OS and the headless one to starts whenever the computer is switched on I want to be able to game on both system at the same time, so discrete audio and video output I want my system to support Wake-on-lan as it's part of my house automation (my pc case being out of reach to actually use the power button daily) I got a few question on how to conceptually do it, I'm curious and got an IT background, so I'm fairly certain that the technicality will not be a problem here Is it more sensible to have 2 VM both running out of a bare-bone host like unraid ? or should I just try to host the headless machine through my main windows system (and is this solution even possible) What would be the overhead difference between the two solution ? Would getting a separate network card help in anyway ? I know a few things around networking, but it isn't my strong suite I'm afraid. Is there any solution that would let me edit the amount of allocated CPU cores at run time without having to restart VMs ? The idea being that the headless VM would be used just a couple of hours a day, and when it's not, getting the cores allocated to my main OS would be idea not a huge issue, but if it's not really practical, I'll go for a 3900x instead of the 3800x. Because my needs or probably unusual, I'm not expecting anyone to have an already made tutorial or anything, Virtualisation looks really deep and wide as a subject, so if anyone has any idea on which technology might be better to use, that would actually be really helpful. I'm currently looking at videos and skimming old forum posts, but I wouldn't want to ignore a quick and easy solution to my problem. Feel free to correct me on any assumption that would be wrong, and again, any input, even small ones, pointing me in the right direction are appreciated. Thanks

  4. Hi everyone! I wanted to know if anybody can help me with my new workstation. We are a couple and we are planing to build a new PC for 4k Video editing, audio recording and production, engineering and architectural desing (BIM), and some soft gaming. And our goal is to have only one workstation for both of us. We use principally Davinci Resolve in ubuntu studio and we try to only use Linux. So i need advice in 2 things. First of all, Software: It's possible to have 2 independent users in linux running at the same time with independent graphics server each one?. Something like have a PC for each one. That should be the same use as run a virtual machine for the second user (like in the video with the hackingtosh VM), but due that we uses the same software, the same distro, and the same files, i think that run without a VM would be better. And like that i think i don't have to concern about to give to one or another "pc" more or less cores or ram or whatever depending in wich of us are doing the more resource hangry task. (because that will be automatically did... or not?). And well, sometimes i need a windows machine that will be a VM but that happens only once each week or less. And Second of all, Hardware: What PC i need? I think that a 3900x with 32gb of ram would be good enogh. I haven't selected yet a GPU but in this moment nvidia is less problematic with Linux than AMD. In the ideal Scenario of having one distro runninng with 2 users, is possible to have 2 GPU? one for each user. What cards would be better under 600 (that doesn't have to be the same because not rarelly we use the pc at 100% of capacity at the same time). or in what i need to think for get one? Also i have a great doubt with the storage. I have a 500gb nvme and some hard disks. Normally i use the ssd only for all the software and the hard disks for media and all the archives, but for video and audio edition, what is the recomended read speed i need from a drive for be able to work with multiple tracks? I have had crashes with my usbHD that works at 100mb/s. Do i necessarily need a SSD for save the video and audio files? Thank you very much! So, i recently found out about Aster ibik (https://www.ibik.ru/) which is like running 2 or more computers side by side from one cpu but without virtualization. And I was wondering if anyone knows it's performance compared to UnRAID. Yeah I know that UnRAID can do many other things too, but let's focus on performance on that post.   6. I have Ubuntu Server 18.04 LTS with some Samba shares, Nextcloud and other services but i want to create a VM with KVM which I can access it outside LAN. I have basic KVM knowledge and at the moment I only can create VM and connect via SSH tunneling and this is the problem because I need to connect outside the LAN. I read a few things in Google that I need to create bridge to connect to VM's outside the LAN. I created bridge then I installed Lubuntu and from the VM I have access to the internet also I checked DHCP list from my router and I can see the VM name and the IP but I can't connect with VNC to the VM without SSH tunneling. Can someone help me to figure out what I am doing wrong? I can give you whatever logs you want to fix the problem. Thanks in advance.

  8. Hi, I'm looking for a way to run 20 independent computers on one cpu. Is that even possible? It's for a gaming/internet cafe. My budget is 2000 us dollars for the cpu, components new or used can be used. My excuse for my shit budget is that I want to run 20 monitors in 720p resolution and would play games of low calibre like pubg pc lite, not too demanding. No AAA titles, just the good old ones. Would prefer using a good value for money ryzen processor like a 3600 that could be repurposed again with flexbility in future unlike server parts... I hope that works... Heck, for GPUs I guess multiple 1050ti would work too, but I have doubts on its power requirements getting fulfilled through the pci express slots alone, since there are no power connectors in that gpu. I can get hold of 1050ti cards for about 75 us dollars a piece, used, in bulk. Again, I'm from india and 2000 us dollars is the average annual income of an earning person. It's kind of a big deal here. Also, if it's not possible, any suggestions regarding this would be great help. So I'm currently in the process of learning how to use VirtualBox, I was successful in getting Ubuntu to run on it, so now I'm going one step up in trying to learn to get Android Oreo running on it, now I know you can use Bluestacks for Android Emulation, but are there advantages to a virtual android system compared to using the emulator? Are there disadvantages?

Hi Guys, I am trying to move out of ESXi (licensing and support is killing me) and into Proxmox but I dont have another host to install Proxmox and migrate the VMs. I use an IBM x3550 server with a LSI RAID controller for storage. 1) Is there anyway where I can remove ESXi and install Proxmox and connect it to storage? 2) I use Veritas Backup Exec for backups. Can I backup the ESXi VMs and restore onto Proxmox? 3) Can I do a Proxmox VM on ESXi and migrate all the VMs and then dump Proxmox onto the bare metal? Please advise. Best regards, Gdcrocx

    My first build

    So up until now, I've just used laptops, but I finally decided to build a pc. I just recently graduated college and got a decent job, so I have some money to work with, but I also have student loans to pay off and a wedding coming up, so I needed to keep it reasonable. I really enjoy virtualization and I've wanted a fully virtualized system for a while now for several reasons, on top of that I found out about the $75 E5-2670 cpus, and I had my starting point. This build will be a dual headed gaming rig for myself and fiance, a nas, and a development pipeline server for my private projects. I managed to get 2 E5-2670's for $68 each after shipping, and an Intel s2600gz motherboard for $99. Got the original water coolers from the motherboard and 2 riser cards for about another $100, and 2 750 Watt redundant psus for $15 each. Finally I found a steal on 4Gb ddr3 ecc ram at $3.50 a stick, and grabbed 8 of those for now (the board has 24 slots, so I can triple my ram to 96Gb without needing more ram per stick. All of this was used on Ebay. Of course, the oddly shaped (and enormous) motherboard and it's 2 power supplies aren't going to fit in a normal case, so I went down to the local lowes and homedepot, and bought an 8'x4.5"x.5" board which I had cut into 4 2" long segments, a 2'x2' sheet of birch plywood, and a ton of screws, bolts, washers, and angle brackets. I also grabbed a 2'x2' sheet of acrylic later and ordered some glass standoffs on ebay for about $1.25 each. Out of this I made a box and mounted everything inside. I cut holes for the two radiators, but I don't have a lot of tools to work with, so I just made two round holes for each one, roughly corresponding to where the fans will be on the inside. I replaced the screaming 40mm server fans in the psus with 40mm noctuas, got 2 120mm noctuas for intake fans, and 2 80mm noctuas for the radiators. I'll need 2 more later, but for now this is what I've got. I managed to squeeze in an evga 1070 sc (literally and financially) along with a usb 3.0 pcie card. I'll get a second gpu, likely a gigabyte mini 1070, for my fiance probably at the beginning of next year. I already had 2 terabyte harddrives (the second one hasn't been mounted yet, so it's not pictured) and a 512 gb ssd. The screws holding the motherboard are countersunk on the back of the plywood and screw into t-nuts on the motherboard side, then there's a nut and washer as standoffs, and another washer and nut on top to hold in the board. Also pictured is the template I drew for the fan holes in the acrylic. I was really scared of cracking it, but it actually went super smoothly. Four small holes for mounting, and six large holes around the fan blade area for air flow. Due to where the system is in the house, there's not a good way to get ethernet to it, so I actually stuffed in a router that bridges to the main router across the house. That also allows me to plug in all four nics on the motherboard. I'm passing through 3 of them to different vm's, allowing them to easily have their own mac addresses and dedicated internet lines. I haven't finished optimizing everything for my windows 10 gaming vm, but it does have the 1070 passed in to it and games just fine so far. I'll put up some benchmarks once everything is set up properly. Software setup right now: host ubuntu mate system with kvm setup centos vm for development work windows 10 pro with 1070 passed through I think I've spent about $900 on this build so far. With the second gpu installed, it'll be about $1300 for effectively 2 gaming rigs and a server. Not too bad for my first build I think
  12. Hello! We have a small HP server (ProLiant ML310e Gen8) in our office which is running 2 VMs (besides some other stuff). Those VMs are very slow > the server only has - old HDDs (2 x 2 TB in Raid 1) - Xeon E3-1220 V2 - 24 GB RAM (1600 MHz ?) I upgraded one VM to Windows 10 some time ago, today I am upgrading the second VM from Win 7 to Win 10. If I start Word i.e. in Task Manager under the Performance tier I can see: CPU ~ 40% RAM not max Disk ! : pinned at 100% / average response time all over the place from 30ms to over 4 seconds Anyone know how to improve the performance? Would a SSD upgrade help? If you need more information, let me know. Thank you! Regards Thomas
  13. Hello everyone! I would like to preface this by saying that I have limited experience with servers, but I DO have my own rack with a couple old Poweredge R420's which have served me well. My objective in this is to replace the various desktops within my home with a single server containing 2 or 4 Xeon CPU's with all the dedicated GPU's from throughout my machines (kind of like what Linus has done recently with his and his wife's machine and his VR build) I have sorted out what chassis I will use but I am stuck on motherboard and CPU's. I am open to using used hardware, mainly I want each CPU to cost less than ~$150 each and the total machine to have 24+ cores for all my VM's. I want similar single-thread performance to my i7-8700 (In my main gaming rig) Also, I am looking for an OS to manage VM's with and I have semi-decided on UNraid, although I am open to suggestions if anyone has objections (It must have GPU passthrough, obv) Thanks!

For a while, I've been using Linux virtual machines for the majority of my browsing and other online activities but I've recently heard about the Xen hypervisor, which VirtualBox apparently, doesn't include so I am eager to find a way to use Xen-based virtual machines on both Windows and Linux. So far, I came across XCP-ng but it requires you to install it as an OS in a server machine before accessing it online on your main computer. Is there a more straightforward way to make and use Xen-based VM's, particularly on Windows like how you do it on VirtualBox with a more regular hypervisor? Thanks.
  15. Hello Guys, I plan to build me an perfect setup for my needs. It can be more than one PC and i am absolutely free for the OS. At this moment i have 2 systems running Ryzen 5 2600x, one heavy system for Gaming and another one running as an VMware Host/NAS. On the Host i plan to build a gaming system which i can use by remote and there must be an NAS solution like freenas running too. So i need a host OS for NAS features and running different VMs. Also i need some advice because i am looking for a powerful Laptop that doesn't have to be able to game but must have some power for programming and virtualization. 1. So what OS should i use on the Host? 2. What CPU from AMD *.* should I use for the Host with money on my mind? 3. Dual CPU system? 4. It would be nice if there is a way to share the mouse, keyboard and monitor for one of the system through LAN/Ethernet without blocking the LAN cable? 5. Can i Plug my peripherals direct to the Host system? 6. If i do so can i switch through the VMs? 7. Which Laptop to use when i am on a Budget? Feel free to give some advice in any kind of way.   16. Hey everybody! I'm new here. I've been watching Linus' videos for over a year and he's taught me a lot of what I know about computers, and I am so grateful. Tech stuff actually is, little by little, starting to make sense to me. So, my problem is, I'm trying to run old games/programs. Most are CD-ROMs, but others are from websites like Big Fish Games. A lot of them run on Windows XP, and while I do have a Windows XP computer, I have been advised to not connect to the internet from that computer because it is too old and not supported anymore. So I've been learning about virtualization and emulators, but I'm having a hard time understanding how to emulate properly. Or which emulator to use for Windows XP. Additionally, I want to use an emulator on the newer computer instead of just installing the games on the older computer because I'm wanting to record myself playing these games, and the newer computer has a video recording program installed already. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Here's an app promising root on any Android phone through the power of a second Android instance contained in a VM. ? Reviews are mixed, some mention the app is slow, some praise... At 1M installs I wonder how my YT binge career has never unearthed this before... And I'm afraid it's vapor ware at best or sketchy mal/spyware at worst. Anyone of you guys who tried it already? VMOS on the Google Play Store I wonder if that environment passes SafetyNet. ?
  18. Hello everyone! I would like to run two of my computer drives at once using some sort of virtualization technology. I have two SSDs, one with Windows and another with MacOS, and I was wondering if someone could give me an idea on what I would need to do. I know Unraid exists, but from what I have seen I would need to convert the drives, but I don't know if they would run on their own again (I don't need to run both of them at the same time, all the time). I know on one of the LTT videos Anthony used a Linux host and KVMs to run his Mac. Could I do something like that with a physical drive and then have them boot separate when I'm not using both? The reason I can't use virtualbox is because I need OpenGL (Or whatever the Mac equivalent is) to run Blender, virtualbox only supports 2.1. If anyone has any methods of doing this, I would be extremely grateful!
  19. I would like to try my hand at running a guest OS *cough MacOS* on my machine, but I require a dedicated GPU to run my host OS. Sadly, my 3600 does not come with an integrated graphics processor, so I was wondering if I could use an inexpensive USB display adapter as the main graphics card for my host (Linux). Something like this: MWave AliExpress My experience with one before was that it was ultra laggy and required display drivers - so it stands to reason that they would be dedicated display processors that run over USB. I intend to automatically launch my guest OS as soon as Linux boots, so there is no drama about the host being laggy. Is this a thing? Can I do this thing? Anthony?

  21. Hi, I need a lot of different Mac OS (X) versions on hand for different software only running on those versions. For now I am just using an external SSD with my VMs for Mac OS X 10.4/5/6/7/8/9/10/11/12/13/14/15 which run virtualized in Proxmox. While the performance is pretty good this way, it is annoying to always shut down the VMs, unplug the SSD and move it over to another Computer when I want to access the VMs from a different Workstation. Since I'm also reworking my Server at this moment to run Proxmox for my Linux VMs I though of moving my Mac instances over to Proxmox. I'm probably pretty spoiled by the performance and ease of use with Parallels so I'm looking for a decent Remote Access Tool for those VMs. Proxmox's NoVNC just plain sucks (also no shared Clipboard). So far I tried using the built-in Screensharing in Mac OS and connect from another mac with the built-in VNC Viewer which does work, share clipboards and I can even drag and drop files, but it shows both cursors (the "virtual" one and the real one) and the virtual one is lagging behind a lot, so the experience is suboptimal. Also, colors look pretty poor. Using RealVNC's VNC Connect with Mac OS's VNC Server is a better experience, image quality is better and I only have one mouse. Moving windows or images (creating a fast changing image) is lagging behind and is showing the progressive scan. Then I tried Parallels Web Access which (so far) has the best framerate, but has a high latency and is noticably compressed (which makes sense since it streams over their servers). What other options are there that allow clipboard sharing and have a good performance? Preferrably no Cloud-based solutions. Bandwith usage within the home network doesn't matter and shouldn't be a factory when deciding on a solution. I do not have issues with paid software if it delivers good results. So far my RealVNC version delivers the best performance and experience. Oh and then there is one more option... Parallels RAS (Remote Application Server). I havent looked into that a lot as it is not very cheap and has an annual subscription. Has anyone tried that and how does it work? Or do you have other ideas on how to accomplish this task? Maybe other hypervisors that support remote desktop natively?   22. Hello, After I turn on CPU Virtualization in Bios, I notice that CPU and RAM frequency decrease - CPU from 3.9GHz to 3.8GHz, and RAM from 3200 to 3133. Does anyone know why this is happening? Is it because of buggy MSI bios or something else? I am trying to help a friend to build a low budget pc, and we study a "Higher Level Training Cycle of Informatics Systems Administration on Net" (I am from Spain so I don't know how its said outside Europe), so we need to use VirtualBox to virtualize from Debian servers (only text) up to windows 2016 server, to do from a simple router to a simple DNS for example, and some times we use like 8 to 10 maximum, virtual machines at once. So because my friend doesn't want to spend like me (i have a amd 2600X and a RX570) because he is not going to play, i dont know how powerful is the 3400g(i search and it have the AMD-V for virtualization), because in class we use a i7-4XXX (i dont remember which model is) with 4 cores and 8 threads, but all the virtual technology available for intel's cpu for regular users (nothing like a server type). So: 3400g is good enough, or i should use another, for a similar price? If you have more ideas feel free to expressed them please. After talking about my upcoming new PC build a friend told me that Intels Virtualization technology (Vt-d / Vt-X) is way faster than AMDs (V / Vi), and that if I want to pass a PCIe device through to a virtual Win10 guest system, I would get a hefty performance penalty on AMD because their Ryzens are not designed to directly access/control IOMMU groups and that I HAVE to get an Intel system to avoid those problems. There were some numbers during the conversation, ranging between "about 90% of possible fps on AMD, maybe less" and "at least 30% performance loss on AMD". Though I find one forum post on tomshardware with the "best answer" claiming Intel is "better" with IOMMU, I can't find any reliable data on that topic, especially if it comes to PCI-passthrough. I never heard about any noticable performance differences between team Red and team Blue regarding virtualization myself, which is why I planed to go for a Ryzen 7 / X570 based system on Arch Linux, including a Win10 guest system with a 5700 XT passed through for games. Hope you can help me out here, I really don't want to buy unsuitable hardware.

I’m looking to run Windows as my host os just for VR gaming and then run a linux box guest as my daily driver and maybe sandbox environment as well? What’s the best way to tackle this? ESXI, I only want one set of monitors and keyboard and mouse. This Option is out then. VMware Workstation, Is guest os multiple monitor support actually working as if it was the host OS?
