So, 2nd system will only receive an NDI source from 1st main system and encode it. Just that. Just as a safety measure. - 3rd system is for a professional graphical designer, mostly Illustrator, InDesign, and website creation on online platforms. - *4th system??? Is it possível to have one “setup” that would boot the full system, full cpu, every gpu used (all other systems would be unaccessible while this setup is online)? - **5th system??? I think I should use vDGA for assigning each gpu to each system, but is it possible to also use vSGA? So, system 1/2/3 would be using vDGA, but then I would have another GPU that was being shared for system 5 6 and 7 using vSGA, is it possible? Makes sense? Current Setup CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960x 24core Turbo 4,5GHz Motherboard: Extended-ATX MSI Creator TRX 40 Ram: 4x16 DDR4 3200 MHz CL14 G.Skill Ripjaws V GPU: RTX 2060 Super Why: My girlfriend (graphic designer) wants a new computer (she uses one MacBook with 8gb of ram and a not so recent cpu). She asked me if the new MacBook Pro, retailing at 6k wouldn’t me the best solution. After I died and comeback.. I thought “Well, Linus is using a virtualization solution in his house for wife computer and more, and on office for full editing team.... so, virtualization must be a good option” I think I have a good enough cpu and motherboard for this project, I would essentially need more ram and individually assign gpus. Right? Is this a good idea? Got some hints? I was looking into Titan GPU... maybe? thanks in advance

I've got a few programs like SolidWorks and Blender that I need to run. However, I was curious if running them in a VM using a hypervisor (such as KVM or Hyper-V) would result in significantly slower performance compared to just running that program in a bare metal OS. If it helps, I'll be doing some more advanced simulations (large fluid simulations) and renders that require some higher-quality images (such as SolidWorks Composer, which although not supported works just fine in a VM). I will be using graphics acceleration and, since VT-d is enabled for PCIe, a GPU passthrough would be used to the VMs. I know that it will run slower in a VM compared to the bare metal OS, but I'm wondering if the speed difference will be significant (i.e. will it take something ridiculous like twice as long for a 1 hour render).

I'm currently planning a new built and plan to either host both Linux and Windows as VMs on an VM Manager OS or host an Windows VM in Linux. The Windows Part will only be used for Gaming (maybe I will also try to use Proton for as many things as possible) and Windows proprietary software. The actual work for Data Science and co will be done in Linux. So the following questions come up: - should I virtualize both systems? or just virtualize windows through linux? - if any of the above solutions, which software would be the best way to go? The built I'm planning will include 8+core CPU, 32GB RAM, dual GPU (will use my old GTX1070 and maybe a new GTX3070).

Okay, I need to provide some context since my title isn't quite accurate. I'm using an ASUS TUF Gaming F15. (R7 4800H, 1x8GB 3200MHz, 512GB NVMe, RTX 3050 Laptop, Windows 10 Home) I have tried the reverse (Linux Mint guest on Windows host) using QEMU but I can't get GPU passthrough working because search results mostly show Linux host and Windows guest. Those that aren't are having having different issues. I have checked my laptop's BIOS and have seen virtualization setting enabled by default, no other related settings found. Yes, Windows 10 Home does not have Hyper-V. I found a batch script that enables it then installed through Windows update. I was able to get Mint running with good performance but awful framerate. I have read that IOMMU support is needed on both the motherboard and the BIOS for GPU passthrough to work, but I found it conflicting that virtualization is supported yet IOMMU might not be. (I'm not sure how I can confirm if my laptop has IOMMU support.) Here's what I'm trying to achieve. I want to transition to Linux for further control of the OS and absolute refusal to use Windows 11. I need OBS Studio, DaVinci Resolve, Waveform Tracktion, and of course, some games (cheers Valve), all of which have native Linux support. Of course, all the apps I need are supported in Linux, that's why I need a VM. One notable software I wish to (strangle) use is Genshin Impact which absolutely needs the GPU passthrough. I can't risk using a hacky workaround because I have a very high level account and I don't wanna get false banned. Dual-booting Windows IS something I can consider given a lack of other options, but I want to avoid it as much as possible. Based on what I know (or how I've set it up in the past), I can only give each OS a fixed amount of usable storage, wasting some storage space to give headroom for both OS's, not to mention the duplicate apps. I'm aware of the possibility that what I'm doing has an entirely different and way more efficient solution, so please bring it up if you do happen to know one. In any case, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated even if I don't quite understand it. I'm a very novice Linux user who's already trying to tackle fairly advanced problems. But it's fun regardless isn't it?

You don't have to choose hey showed win 10 and macos virtualized on a linux host with a sepereate gpu passed to each machine i remember it was a ryzen system with 2 gpus so how will user manage the host os without any gpu (since both cards are passed to vms) i was trying to do so myself and faced this hiccup.

I'm looking to switch away from windows as I generally dislike almost everything about it, but I dont wanna use wine, so i was wondering if i could create a windows VM in linux and dedicate the GPU to it to play my games on (and use some windows specific software development tools), and use linux for my other stuff. I have a multi monitor setup too, where I have the monitors connected to the GPU, there arent enough ports on the motherboard to have the displays run off of it, but I do have onboard video for the linux system. What VM software would you recommend for this use case and any tips how to set this up or things like that, I've never really used VMs so I'm a total noob here. Anyone can tell me how to set this up would be amazing. (I also want to have this kind of setup for my laptop,which also has a dedicated GPU) Thanks in advance!

I would like to try my hand at running a guest OS *cough MacOS* on my machine, but I require a dedicated GPU to run my host OS. Sadly, my 3600 does not come with an integrated graphics processor, so I was wondering if I could use an inexpensive USB display adapter as the main graphics card for my host (Linux). Something like this: MWave AliExpress My experience with one before was that it was ultra laggy and required display drivers - so it stands to reason that they would be dedicated display processors that run over USB. I intend to automatically launch my guest OS as soon as Linux boots, so there is no drama about the host being laggy. Is this a thing? Can I do this thing? Anthony?

I want to preface this with: This is purely for my own enjoyment and curiosity. I want to do it more as a side project than anything else and am not necessarily looking for an "easier alternative." If it doesn't work, that's another thing. Anyway: I am looking to make a MacOS VM that I can passthrough either an old GPU (Sapphire Radeon HD 6600, i think) I have or a used GPU I will purchase. When everything is said and done, if I do get the machine up and running, I will use it for GarageBand and possibly some Photoshop. The pieces of Information that I am looking for are: What version of MacOS X should I look into installing? I know not all of them have functionality with PCI Passthrough, but I haven't been able to find a clear answer on what could support it and what cannot. What VM software should I use for the best results? I have VMWare Workstation Pro and VirtualBox. I have made a Mojave VM on Workstation Pro but have been running into an issue installing VMWare Tools (I get an error saying it cannot reach the download server, or something to that degree, but I can get the exact error when I am home later). There are other questions I have, but I will refrain from asking those until I do a bit more research on them Any help I can get with this would be much appreciated!

Hey, so I've just watched this new 2020-06-20 Linus video on linux gaming better than windows. And since I'm making a new PC, I'd like to try (again, after a couple years) to have Linux (Ubuntu or Mint) as my main host OS and daily driver, and escape the windows 10 nightmare, ...but still keep my Windows as a VM for work reasons and maybe for the odd game that doesn't run on linux (due to DRM etc). I see it's pretty easy to even convert your current OS from your current PC, into a virtual machine version of that PC, but before I jump into any rabbit holes I need to know: - Can I make my Windows VM actually have access to my Nvidia GPU? Right now it's a GTX 1660Ti but will likely become an RTX 3070 or so. -- If so, can my GPU run both the host OS and the VM? Because I don't have Intel HD graphics. (team red) -- if so, what virtual machine software do you recommend (for a linux host)? -- If so, I understand RTX support for Linux is iffy or just beginning at best, but even if RTX doesn't work on the Linux Host, will it be possible to get RTX support within the Windows VM??? Alternatively, as a last resort, and for the sake of research and completeness, will my requirements (of GPU virtualization to the VM) be met if I used a different GPU? Like some Quadro or whatever, or an AMD GPU? THANKS ^__^

Has anyone tried passing through a 10 series card yet? Looking at buying a 1060 for my wife and a 1070 for myself. Only question is if there are any known issues with the normal workarounds to get an nvidia card to pass through nicely on the new 10 series cards. If there are I might have to get a 480 and wait for the 490 for myself. I have a really nice 32 thread server I'm using as a desktop with a custom case I built (replaced the 40mm screamer psu fans with 40mm noctuas, too). Going to use it as a dual headed gaming system + nas and private developement pipeline with a local gitlab, dns, and chef server. Might also move to using pfsense in a vm at some point, too.
