Hi Guys, My company is looking to replace some aging Sun 3/E systems as the Coaxial & SCSI Ethernet Boards are failing and spares are hard to come by or none existent. So now I'm looking at the community of UNIX & Linux Hackers around to help out. Would like to replace the system with new hardware running BSD or Linux, but thinking about how we could interface the legacy ports and connectors. The Device all these machines are connected to is a Flight Safety B737-300 Flight Simulator. Most if not all of the cockpit parts are from a real aircraft, so most of these lagacy ports are there to adapt it to the tech of the time (Some of which are from 1988). I will checkout whatever you awesome guys have sent me thus far. As we see it, this machine has another year or so if the parts hold up. The manufacturer wants an insane amount of money to update the whole system to just 2 racks with 2-3 modern machines (Mostly running Linux now), we're trying to find a solution that enables us to run Video Tour : https://youtu.be/GtmpFWxo_aA Flight Simulator : This is the Flight Safety (Manufacturer) B737-300 Flight Simulator manufactured in 1991. We use for Flight Training, many airlines from the Asian and African sector still operate these Aircrafts. https://ibb.co/mvtYSmc https://ibb.co/4t9zHRh https://ibb.co/mBXv4Rs Host Sun 0 Machine : This has the main OS on it with whatever applications are needed to run the IOS Software (Instructor Operating Station) Host_1 : https://ibb.co/tL5KMhj Sun Micro 501-8027 3/E Ethernet/SCSI Card aka the Ethernet Board that has failed : https://ibb.co/NZh58ZP https://ibb.co/48sVJYV https://ibb.co/0yJwwwJ https://ibb.co/stdWJ8g https://ibb.co/jLKBqpK Client Sun Machine : The images below are for a client machine of sorts, It connects to a Host machine (also Solaris Based using the Sun 3/E and Motorola Chassis) and gets an IP Address of sorts to link the two machines using the 501-8027 Cards. Old Faithful, soon to be retired to a farmhouse where it will live, attached to a living room TV to just play the Sims and YouTube videos for the rest of its days: i7 4790k, ASUS Maximus Hero VII, 32GB DDR3, EVGA (rip) GTX 1080 FTW, Samsung 850 EVO Sata SSD, and a 2TB mechanical hard drive for mass storage. (Paid around $1200 in 2017) Replaced with: Ryzen 5 7600x, MSI MAG Tomahawk, 32GB DDR5, EVGA RTX 3080 TI XC3 Ultra (used from Jawa for $500), and two 1TB NVMe m.2 drives in addition to my existing storage. Paid $1150 earlier this week for all the parts. Right now, I feel like I've gotten a fairly capable machine for a decent price. The 3080 TI retailed initially for more than my whole build put together, and with it being the 12gb version I'm hopeful I can get a similar lifespan out of the 3080 as the 1080. Anyone else have experience buying (or selling) a GPU through Jawa? But I'm interested to know anyone else's opinion, as well!

1. Budget & Location Germany, <1.5k EUR would be preferred and 2k is my upper limit 2. Aim After hosting some stuff in the cloud for a few years I'm now in a position where I can move that into my home. I'm using a mini PC as a server which has ample resources, except storage. My storage needs have gotten quite large (<8TB) over the years and since I'm a bit of a data hoarder I can't get myself to delete old stuff. Thus a NAS is probably the only solution, which brings me to my problem: Do I upgrade my PC and use the old parts for my NAS or buy new components for the NAS and leave my PC as is? Here are my current PC specs, I have highlighted the parts which I would use for the NAS: AMD 5 5600X Palit GamingPro GeForce RTX 3080 12GB LHR 12 GB Video Card MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory Corsair SF750 750 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully Modular SFX Power Supply Samsung 980 Pro 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive Samsung 980 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive Samsung 870 Evo 2 TB 2.5" Solid State Drive Samsung 860 Evo 500 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic (more of a temporary solution, since I do plan on getting some kind of rack mountable solution in the future) I currently have 6 fans + a Lian Li Galahad AIO in my system + I still have the cooler that came with the CPU, I could probably split these up between the two systems and only buy 2 (?) new fans. The case comes with 2 fans and if I notice performance problems a fan or two won't break the bank I also have a GTX 1060 3GB which I might be able to use for hardware encoding/decoding. So if I were to turn this into a NAS I would just need to buy some storage. The Motherboard has a lot of SATA connectors, 2 NVME slots and 2.5GBE and if necessary I could easily slot in a 10GBE card. My mini PC also has a 10GBE SFP+ port. The only downside I could see is the power draw. Energy in Germany is quite expensive at the moment, so any money I spend now to decrease the power draw will be well worth it. On the other hand, the power draw of the CPU does not seem too bad and the PSU is platinum-certified. My main PC is mostly used for programming. I mostly work on web apps and their backends, but I'm trying to get into ML development. On the side I do some gaming, my most recent games include Balatro, heavily modded Minecraft, The Finals and Lethal Company. My most played games are Minecraft and Rainbow Six and I want to try Manor Lords. Except in modded Minecraft, I haven't noticed any real performance problems. Docker might run a little sluggish, but I think that's to be expected on Windows. If I were to go the upgrade PC route this would be the new specs: Reuse Palit GamingPro GeForce RTX 3080 12GB LHR 12 GB Video Card Reuse all of the storage AMD Ryzen 5 7600X (~200EUR) (I mostly looked at AMD CPUs since I'm happy with my current one, but there is no real brand loyalty) MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK (~200EUR) (The same applies for the motherboard) Corsair Vengeance 32 GB (Correct me if I'm wrong but the important part seems to be that the speed is "right", so in this case I would need 5200 MT/s) (~100EUR) be quiet! Straight Power 12 750W ATX 3.0 (~140EUR) Fractal Design North (is the XL worth the extra money?) (~140EUR/~170EUR (XL)) ---------------------- 780EUR/810EUR, leaving over 500EUR for NAS drives. 3 Recertified Seagate Exos x16 HDDs with 16TB each would cost about 530EUR and would allow me to run a RAID 5 array. I might be able to find something cheaper on Ebay if I take some time. Feel free to change the specs, but there are a few things I need: Wake on Lan, enough place/ports for storage, at least 2.5GBE, one USB-C (most of my peripherals are connected via a USB-C Hub) in the back and one easily accesible at the front. If I were to go the "just build a NAS" route, I would probably follow this YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjDoQA4C22c which has the following specs: Topton N5105 NAS Board (~155EUR) 2x Crucial 16GB DDR4 SODIMM (~66EUR) Fractal Design Node 304 (~100EUR) Corsair RM559x 2021 (~130EUR) --------------- ~450EUR, about 330EUR cheaper, compared to the upgrade plan. But, the CPU is about ~80% slower according to CPU benchmark. 3. Monitors I currently use two monitors. One 21.5" AOC E2275PWJ as my horizontal second monitor and one SAMSUNG LS34J550WQUXZG 34.1" as my main monitor. Both run at low refresh rates and resolution which probably explains why I have high FPS in most games. I noticed that a lot of realy nice monitors are currently being released, so I'll probably wait a little longer before upgrading to see what I can get and let the prices come down a little. I especially liked the MSI MPG 321URX, but it seems to be quite a bit more expensive in Europe. 4. Peripherals No new peripherals are needed and any Windows license I might need to purchase won't count towards my budget as I can probably transfer my current Windows 10 Pro license. So the final question is do I upgrade my current PC and use the "old" parts in a NAS or do I keep the PC as is and just build a NAS? Is there anything else I should consider? What is your opinion? Thank you in advance for any tips/advice

So unlucky me got a 16GB DDR4 3600Mhz cas 18 Trident Z C-die Ram that can not handle 1.35v(XMP).After days of trying different settings and many posts later I've managed to stabilize them at 1.30v 18-22-22-44. I'm about to upgrade to 32GB ram but im trying to save some money at the same time. My question is if i get an other 16GB (so that i have 4x8GB) and they work like they are supposed to will they have trouble booting with my current settings? (for the faulty ram i already have) or should i grab 2x16GB?

Budget (including currency): $1000 Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Light gaming, mostly Factorio, some AAA modern games but not too much. I use a 3440x1440p monitor, so would be nice to be able to play most games at 60fps high settings. Other details: I am currently rocking a Ryzen 7 2700X (8c16t) and a Radeon VII GPU and I am starting to consider upgrading to something more modern. Not sure what the best path would be, thinking of going the 7800X3D route for the CPU, but factoring that and a new motherboard, I am wondering what GPU would be an upgrade to the Radeon VII I currently have without going crazy with something like a 4090. I have an 850W power supply that I would like to keep. I am OK with going used for the GPU as well, just not sure where to start.

I have recently upgraded to a 7900 xtx and got a new PSU to make sure I had plenty of power. I was running a 750w before and upgraded to a 1000w. But since I hooked up the new PSU, I cannot get the PC to boot. When i power up the PSU, RGB lights on the motherboard light up and then if I hit the power button the pc briefly lights up then dies, when I press the power button again, nothing happens. If I power down the PSU, let it discharge then power it back up I can try to power the PC again one more time before the Power button does nothing. I switched back to the old one and it does the same thing... Any help would be appreciated... :) Added a video of the issue. https://photos.app.goo.gl/fnwm9WSrA2DuFhqR9

I use a homebuilt UnRaid server as a file storage and media streaming server. I have around 14TB of Blu Rays and DVDs stored on a JBOD with 1 drive of parity (made up of 4TB and 8TB HDDs [I think they're WD Reds], about 24TB total capacity). The 4TB drives are all 2-3TB full. Lately, I've noticed that the Finder window takes about 10-15 seconds to load all of the icons when I open the Movie folder. Similarly, playback is stuttering when both playing the file directly via VLC (Plex not functional due to Comcast modem IP passthrough issues). Similarly, 1-2 threads/cores show higher loads during playback, but the eth0 connection doesn't appear to saturate the 1 Gbps ethernet connection I use. I attempted to add a 2TB NVME cache drive, but it doesn't appear to do anything. I do rip using Make MKV at full quality (~40GB for Blu Ray, ~24GB for the main movie file) instead of pulling a compressed version. I did also build it about 6 years ago (May 2018) and have not touched it since apart from adding 2 more HDDs and the NVME drive so it's not exactly new. Looking for a potential solution to upgrade the server to make playback smoother/Finder display faster if anyone has a solution. Not sure if it could be processor related, drive fill or speed related, OS related, etc. Specs (not currently IVO the server, so from memory): CPU: i5-8400 RAM: 16GB DDR4 GPU: N/A Storage: WD Reds or Red Pros at 4TB and 6 or 8TB, 2TB Samsung 900 something cache drive OS: UnRaid Ethernet: 1 Gbps Should I upgrade to a more recent processor, swap to SSDs, use a different OS, add a GPU? Not sure where to go next and looking for any assistance that can be provided.

I have a PC right now with an i5-11400f and want to upgrade my GPU from a 1650 SUPER to something higher. I've heard and seen that I should get a 3060, or a 3070, but I'm just here as a way of verification for what I should actually get. I don't want too much bottleneck, but also not some obviously crazy expensive GPU. Thank you, if you respond. I'm adding this in as an edit: my budget is 300-400 dollars

Budget (including currency): ~$300 Country: USA, Alaska, Anchorage (Bonus points for buying local to avoid shipping delays) Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: BeamNG, Cyberpunk, RimWorld Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Hello all, I have an old Alienware Aurora R4 that I want to last a little longer before I build a new PC. Specs are Intel i7-3820, 16gigs DDR3, a GTX 660, and lastly an Intel SATA SSD Right now it runs BeamNG at about 30fps on lowest. I'm not expecting a miracle to happen like 4k at 300fps, but a more realistic 1080p at 60fps (120 would be nice). My budget being ~$300 may be weird to some, but I plan on repurposing the GPU later for a home server. All recommendations welcome Update: Threw an RX 6650 XT in it and got it to run Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 FPS avg. (Even though the CPU is pegged at 100% the whole benchmark) I'm happy, bought myself a little more time before I have to start with a fresh build.

Hey! I am looking forward to upgrading my pc a bit in the next few months. First a want to upgrade my CPU. I have had it for quite a while now and in certain situations I can feel its age. Later I am looking forward to upgrading my GPU to something like a 4070. So what CPU would you suggest buying right now? (not too expensive) Ryzen 5 3600 Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus Corsair RM850 As far as I know my mainboard shouldn't be a problem right? A BIOS Update should make it possible to pair it with newer ryzen CPUs (AM4)? Thanks!
-
So I have a 1070 now I want to upgrade for a decent 1440P GPU 4070 Super or one of the AMD Cards? Trying to keep it between 500-700 USD Range but anything less with decent performance is a plus give me decent reasons as to what card you suggest I see these 12GB cards preforming well but some games use more VRAM so I just worry and have always been a green card owner but would be willing to move to an AMD platform if the price and performance warrants it.

Budget (including currency): 300-400 USD (can change) Country: no healthcare for free (USA) Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: VR and unity mainly, current rig gets like 20-30 fps on vrchat with slow unity imports Other details: I have a dell xps 8930 right now, it has a i7-8700 with 32 gbs of ddr4 3200 mhz ram (downclocked bc of dell's bios to 2133 mhz) with a AMD 6600 XT with a old driver (22.5.1 instead of 24.2.1, more info later), a 700 watt EVGA bronze rated psu, and 1 m.2 drive with one ssd. I'm hoping to keep the ram, psu, gpu maybe, and storage, I have a MSI MPG Series GUNGNIR 110R case already. I just need to know whats good, used or new. I may wait to buy the parts for like 2-3 months if that makes a difference. Noise is no issue, i do not care how loud it is, i just want it to be fast. It will be on the carpet however as the listing for the desk i bought had wrong measurements. With the previously said driver version thing, the reason it has to be that is because while in vr, any other driver version will cause videos inside vr to become green and all messed up and causes crashing. (https://community.amd.com/t5/drivers-software/22-5-2-and-newer-has-bugs-in-vrchat-through-video-player/m-p/560479) I would perfer to go super cheap on the motherboard and get a super good cpu as right now my software for just face tracking in vr uses 20-30% of my cpu with other needed things for vr taking 20-30% as well. (pc pic attached for those interested, its open so it doesnt overheat)

Budget (including currency): $200-500 (AUD) Country: Australia Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Halo, CoD, GTA V, Asseto Corsa, Apex Legends, WRC, DiRT Rally 2.0. I also do a reasonable amount of graphic design and video editing with a lot of post FX processing. Goals: Overall FPS and performance increase, CPU and GPU are maxed out on GTA V around 100fps avg Very High settings. Current Specs: CPU - Intel Core i5 9400F GPU - Radeon RX 570 Armor OC 4gb RAM - 48GB - 2x8 gb 3200mhz DDR4 - 2x16gb 3200mhz DDR4 Motherboard - MSI B360M Bazooka SSD - Kingston A400 240GB HDD - Seagate Barracuda 2TB PSU - Phanteks PH-P550GF 550w Gold Note: I will be upgrading/adding a larger SSD so don't factor that into the budget/upgrade suggestions as I'm onto that already. I'm looking for a GPU and/or CPU upgrade that is compatible with what I have already. I read on another forum post that people going from RX 570 to RX 5700xt almost doubled their FPS. From my understanding RX 570 is GDDR5 and 5700XT is GDDR6 would it still be compatible with my board? I'm happy to buy used parts FYI. Please help I'm kind of a noob. Thanks in advance

Hello, I just "upgraded" my PC to I think better specs but I'm not sure that's why I want to ask here (I generally don't know too much about building a Computer). I had previously built 2 x 8GB (3200 MHz) in my PC. But now I took "old" parts from my other PC and now I've installed additionally 1 x 16 (3000 MHz) and 1 x 8 (1200 MHz). The question now is, is it optimal? I now have 40 GB of RAM but I'm unsure how many MHz they are running. The task manager tells me it is 2133 MHz but I don't know if that's true or if that is even good. Thanks for the help already!

I have a small 500gb SSD as my main storage for my operating system and programs but it's starting to get full with programs and updates. I would like to get a larger storage device and maybe go to a m.2 drive and transfer my OS to it. Anyone ever done this and do they know how to as it would be good to be able to upgrade space and still use my SSD as a game storage device.

So I will be upgrading my pc within the next 5 ish weeks and I've decided to change my 6500xt out for a 6800, my current CPU is an i5-11400f and I wanted to know how much better an i7-11700 is and of its worth it or if there are better options for upgrading my CPU. I mostly play Rainbow 6 Siege, Asseto Corsa Competizion, Fortnite, and Minecraft, and yes I know that Fortnite and Minecraft don't need much to run them but I play both in a competitive scene so things do get laggy when alot is going on. So basically I'm just wondering if the i7-11700 is that much better that I should upgrade or if there is another CPU that is worth it.
-
So I've basically already decided on the 6800 but I wanted to hear what some of you guys think and if maybe I should go for the 6800xt instead and or if the 6700XT and 6800 are so comparable it that I should go with the cheaper one. As far as I know the 6800 is better than the 6700XT by quite a bit.

So as of right now i use a Ryzen 5 2600 with the RX 6700xt which i upgraded form the GTX 1650, i am looking to upgrade my CPU from the Ryzen 5 2600 to something better. I have my eyes on the Ryzen 7 5700x right know but i do not know if that is a good choice or not, i checked the compatibility with my Motherboard which is a ASRock B450-HDV R.4 which to my knowledge can run the Ryzen 7 5700x after i upgraded the BIOS which i did. Or should i upgrade to AM5? but i have a budget of like 150 $US or something like that, i'm not living in the US though. My Computer Specs as of right now is : CPU : Ryzen 5 2600 GPU : RX 6700xt MotherBoard : ASRock B450-HDV R.4 RAM : 16x2 GB 3200 MHz DDR4 (Limiting it now because CPU only supports upto 2933 MHz) PSU : 500W PSU 80+ Silver(I Think) Applications i'm using are : Blender (Later) Photoshop Video Editing Games that i wanna play : Cyberpunk CS2 BG3 Valorant Thanks and help me.

Budget (including currency): up to 1,200 Euro Country: Germany Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, Valorant, Minecraft My current build: - Ryzen 7 5800X - MSI MPG X570 GAMING EDGE WIFI - VENGEANCE® LPX 2x32GB (3200MHz) - MSI 3070 GAMING X TRIO - Samsung 980 Pro 1TB (Main SSD) - Crucial MX500 2 TB - Toshiba 2TB HDD - STRAIGHT POWER 11 850W - NZXZ H510 Elite I'm thinking of upgrading my PC to handle my work stuff better and do a little gaming on the side (Valorant and Minecraft). I spend most of my time in Premiere Pro and Photoshop, but I really want to start working with After Effects aswell. My projects usually stick to 1080p, but sometimes I work with 4k footage. I'm not sure where to spend my cash for upgrades. Should I beef up my CPU, motherboard, and RAM to improve overall performance? Or should I invest into a better GPU like a 4070Ti or even a 4080 Super? Oh, and in case it helps with the decision-making, my main display is the Odyssey OLED G8. (3440x1440p)
