Hi, I have been a subscriber to Linus Tech Tips on YouTube for a year or so, but this is the first time I have posted on the forums. I am looking to build my first custom PC and want your feedback! The goal for this PC is to game at 1080p 60hz on as high of settings as possible and also be my work/school computer. I have a limit of $1000 (USD) to spend, including the cost of Windows 10, monitors, and a keyboard. The main game I want to play is No Man's Sky. My current gaming setup (a laptop from 2011 with a GTX 540M) technically runs NMS, but gets like 2 fps. Other games I hope to play are Overwatch, Shadow of Mordor, Skyrim: Special Edition, and Mass Effect Andromeda. The main items I am unsure about are the motherboard and how much cooling I will need, so your help with those decisions will be great. Also, pairing the Pentium G4560 with a GTX 1060 feels odd, but would it cause a CPU bottleneck for gaming? Let me know if anything seems stupid, won't work, or is a waste of money. I dabble in app development as a hobby. I also want to get an intel realsense webcam for Windows Hello at some point, which requires a 6th or 7th gen intel processor, I believe. URGENT HELP required, was in the market for a NAS or external hdd solution(ssd too pricey) that is at least 16tb and doesn't break the bank. I am looking to use one for editing 4k content for a documentary. it should provide sufficient reliability and speeds for a smooth workflow ($1000).

I'm trying this again. I figured out that for my desires I needed to increase my budget to meet more of my important needs. I'm a computer science major, and I'm looking for a small laptop with a long battery life for use in college. Budget: $1000 Country: US Size: 13.3"/14" Weight: Under 3lbs Battery Life: At least 8 hours when tested using streaming or wifi testing CPU Cores: 4 DRAM: 8 GB Storage: 256 GB SSD or more (NVMe or sata) I don't care about upgradable ram, thunderbolt, or screen resolution. I was considering an LG gram 13 which Costco had for $800 for an i5 (now sold out). Their i7 version is $900. I was also looking at the Asus UX333. Also saw that B&H has an Asus zenbook 13 UX331FAL for $750. I've heard the XPS 13 9380 is VERY highly recommended. But that is at the top of my price range, currently $1,176 at Dell.com. $976 after their 17% discount and my student discount. So ideally the best for the price the better is what I'm going for. I'm willing to spend the money, but I want to know that the investment is good and that the laptop will last me at least 3 years at minimum.

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a laptop under $1.2k in Canada that is capable of playing modern games well with a discrete GPU, but also doesn't have the "Gamer look" in any way whatsoever. I will possibly be using it at day to do business in which I would be showing clients something using the laptop on a regular basis(Nothing against the gamer look, it just doesn't fit in to what I'm doing). I've had a lot of trouble finding the exact thing I'm describing. I purchased an Inspiron 5577 laptop - the closest to the match I could find (it still had red "gamer details" but they were subtle), but am am sending back because the poor quality hard drive in it caused startup times of close to three minutes and long load times for initial launches of programs and games (Yes, I know, it's the era of SSD, but I have several older laptops from 2011 which actually boot Windows 10 faster than the thing so there is really no excuse. I have never, ever seen a hard drive that bad.). So, now I'm back to the drawing board and am really looking to get something before Fed 22. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!! Cheers!

Hello there! My name is Roborvisci (as you can see by my username). I would like to make quality gaming videos for YouTube, but at the present moment, my computer sucks. I have tried recording several games, including Minecraft, Terraria, and Batman: Arkham City. I have come to the conclusion that I need a different computer. I have always enjoyed disassembling and reassembling computers, so I thought I would give it a go. I plan to go through Newegg.com and other such PC parts sellers, but I thought that there might be someone on here who might be able to recommend a setup to go for. My budget is between $500 and $750, although I will go up to $1000 if necessary. Thank you for taking the time to read through this post.

Does anyone know of any good thin (under 1.5 inches) and light (realistic weight) gaming laptops under $1000 to play games like league of legends and rocket league?

Hi. I'd like community feedback for my new build. For my CPU, I went with the newer version of the i5-3570K running Haswell, the Core i5-4690K. This CPU can overclock well and came at a price lower than the 3570K, which made me question my life. I've not decided fully on the CPU cooler, but I'm thinking of going with the Corsair H60 to deliver some decent overclocks with this CPU. However, I'd very much appreciate feedback on what cooler I should use to get a stable 4.2-4.4GHz clock. And yes, I am aware that not every chip is the same, so I may not get these, but I still want the most out of this CPU. For the motherboard, I just went with the board that had Z97 support, was from a brand I trusted, and had 2 PCIe slots. The board was the ASUS Z97-A(suggested by Speedyv). It has onboard USB 3 connectors, 3 PCIe slots, and from what I've seen, a great BIOS menu. RAM-wise, I just wanted some decent looking and fast RAM. This was 16GB of G.Skill Ares DDR3 Memory @2133MHz(suggested by lee32uk). For the HDD, I just got a Seagate Barracuda 2TB @7200RPM. I've heard good things about it, so I'll try it. The SSD pricing seemed extremely weird. The 850 Pro with 256GB was less than an 840 EVO with 250GB. Oh well, faster speeds for me. Now I'm basing this off of my current upgraded HP Pavillion, running a refresh of my current Z77 chip. So, I'll get myself a free ASUS GTX 760 Direct CU II. I will save for a 980 or wait for something else for a bit. I struggle with cases, simply because I'm just not good with space management. I decided on the Corsair 200R for now(suggested by Speedyv and zonahbear). I don't want to spend more money than I need to on a case, and I want to get some good air flow with it. Feedback on this would be appreciated. For the PSU, I only wanted something that I could afford and wasn't over the top. We've picked out an EVGA 850W 80+ Gold Certified PSU(suggested by lee32uk). It's fully modular and does the job, while also allowing for some upgrading room. If the performance efficiency continues with Maxwell, I could probably get something with a lower wattage. And for the OS, I want Windows 7 Home Premium, allowing me to use my 16GB of RAM while using a very sleek and functional operating system. And when Windows 10 releases, I'll wait a bit for some updates, and then upgrade to that.
