Hi everyone. I was browsing FaceBook Marketplace and I ended up buying this old Sony Vaio laptop for a bargain, the surprise of it having a blu-ray optical disc drive and a gorgeous 16.4" 1600x900 display (looks like an IPS panel to me, not sure though), proved too much for a film buff\bluray enthusiast like me to resist. The previous owner removed the HDD and installed a Kingston A400 SATA SSD that made it pretty snappy (within reason) and fast to boot. I'm not sure if the second ram stick was an upgrade, but I suspect that it originally came with only 4gigs. Once home I immediately ran msinfo32 and CPU-Z to check out the detailed specs of the machine (detailed .txt below): I did some research but I wasn't able to find any drivers or documentation for it on Sony's website or anywhere else. I then researched the motherboard's PM45 Chipset in order to try to come up with an upgrade path to make it a little snappier and more usable in Windows 10. My idea is to replace the 2gb ram stick with 4 and the P7350 with a C2D P8700 for about 20% more CPU performance, however, I have no way of knowing if it's going to work other than meeting the 25w tdp and going by what the chipset CPU support list indicates. If possible, I would also like to replace the wifi card with something that could support Wi-Fi 6 and BT 5. One thing I fear is the possibility of this machine having any kind of parts whitelist on the bios to restrict upgrades, like some ThinkPads do. It seems like something Sony would do. I would also like to find the recovery discs that come with the original OEM software\drivers and the InterVideo WinDVD BD solution to play BD movies. (I have installed my copy of PowerDVD but I'd like to use the original software that came with it). I tried finding it on the archive but had no luck. Same thing trying to find any teardown\upgrade guides on iFixit or similar websites, nothing at all. Can anyone help me out with this thing? Thanks! DESKTOP-8P834NV.txt

My VAIO has 35W i5 3230M and want to upgrade to 35W i7 3632QM. I think that generally there is no Laptop CPU microcodes available... but socket is upgradable / not soldered. If someone ever upgraded SONY VAIO E17 / E15 / E13 laptop to any other CPU please let me know... Maybe there is no need of new microcodes and they are built in but as the i7 CPU is expensive, I need more information first. I do not need any other information, comment only if you experienced VAIO (or any) laptop CPU upgrade. and just for the info: This VAIO had two models in shop, i5 and i7 and there is not CPU support information for this models. Generally laptops CPU support isn't available. Most time at least.

Hello, this is my first post on any forum like this and since I watch a lot of LTT content i tought I might as well just come here for help. I have a HUGE problem with my Sony Vaio SVE171E13M (the other model name is SVE1713S1EW). So for a very long time I had a pretty common 100% disk usage problem, you know it's nothing terrible tbh just had to replace my HDD. But even after replacing the HDD to an SSHD and installing a fresh copy of Windows 10 the problem still occurred. After that I tried everything like disabling Superfetch, WIndows Search and other stuff like that. I also completely cleaned all of the hardware and SATA connector, updated my BIOS, updated SATA drivers and everything else I could update. Changed my ram sticks and even tried installing WIndows 10 on another fully working HDD and still the same problem. I connected my SSHD to my PC and booted it, there was no 100% disk usage problem on the pc only on my Sony Vaio. I've looked all over multiple forums and NO ONE has the same problem as me. I have no idea what to do with this I tried everything I could and still to no avail. If you have any idea what to do then please try to help me.

Well this is my friends laptop and he asked me since i finished my gaming pc to take a look at it to see if i could upgrade some hardware on it to make it faster. It tried to convince him that upgrading laptops this old are more of a trivial pursuit due to the age, size problems and possible soldered in parts but he wouldn't take no. Anyways its running windows vista so i already know that has to go. hopefully. here are the exact specs for the laptop. http://uk.hardware.info/product/30691/sony-vaio-vgn-nr38ms/specifications weirdly on the bottom it say its a model PCG-8112L but the parts say different. honestly i'm pretty green to upgrading old computers so i wanted to get some advice where to start. Can this motherboard even support a high priced CPU in that socket size. I honestly don't know so i seek your advice oh wise ones.

what's causing that??? Out of the blue, my sony vaio flip 13 model 2012 (SVF13N13CXB) started doing this :-/ In 2013, just a week after I bought it, the machine suffered from random and frequent shutdowns. I RMA'd it back to Sony and they replaced the motherboard. Then, the touchscreen started making contact with the keyboard, resulting in random sleep wakes and key-presses. And then, the mouse pad's left side sunk into the body of the PC, so I had no choice but to fix it manually. After that, the fan made a grinding noise, so I ordered a replacement and fixed it as well. I have a handy way with electronics, But NOW THIS HAPPENED. And I guess it's a hardware issue, but I need some troubleshooting guidelines about what is actually wrong, and how could I fix it myself. I have no spare money to invest in a shiny new Vaio or Surface Pro since I've gone back being a student (academic nursing school n'shit), and the special abilities and versatility of this puppy are absolutely crucial to my day to day life (my whole notebook, as is my life, is digitized on ONENOTE. Hi! I recently "inherited" an old laptop from my sister, and I was messing around with it, trying to see what issues it had and whatever, and I came across this: It's the first laptop I've had in a good 6-7 years and I haven't really used bluetooth basically ever because of that, so i'm not sure if that actually means this computer is capable of bluetooth, I cannot find anywhere a place to adjust settings, Microsoft's support page says to look for it on the control panel but nothing pops out, it makes mention of having "Bluetooth wireless technology" installed, so I tough maaaybe it's a piece of software, but I wasn't able to find it anywhere, the driver for the device is theoretically up to date too. And I even went into Intel's site and installed their wireless software, a version that theoretically supports bluetooth. So i'm not sure, at this point i'm almost convinced the problem is simply that this thing doesn't have it, what am I doing wrong?

Hello everyone, so I have questions that has stuck in my mind for awhile now; is changing Laptop motherboard possible? I somehow burned my old Laptop motherboard (Anything else is fine except the battery). I don't think it's worth changing the motherboard because of technical complication. Thank you in advance for giving opinion for me. I really appreciate it.

I have a sony vaio pcg-3e2l with windows 7 with out a battery, just a wall charger. The problem is it will not power on when the power button is pressed. The light on the adapter is lit up so there is power, and when i plug the adapter into the laptop, the led light lights up green for 2 seconds and shuts off. When pressing the power button nothing happens, when removing the power adapter the led light flashes green again. I have opened it up already and made sure the connection to the power jack was working. Please help.

So i was unsure about where to post this since i don't know for sure what is causing the problems. Feel free to redirect me to the proper forum if needed. I bought a Sony Vaio Pro 13 (i5, 8gb ram, 128gb ssd, Windows 8) 1½ months ago and generally i'm happy with it, but sometimes i experience weird things with it. Sometimes the screen bightness control feature inside windows 8 stops working. Restarting the computer will fix this issue and it differs how long it will take for it to come back. I haven't been able to connect it to any app. Also the screen brightness will jump up and down during video playback in VLC sometimes dropping way too love. I've tried both deleting the sony programs which are designed to "optimise the experience" and tinkering with their options. Both things have yielded no solution though. Another more problematic issue is it's sleep function. Sometimes when plugged in, it will go to sleep for a brief moment, when i close the lid but then after a while turn on again automatically and the fan will get really hot while doing this. Also sometimes when i open the lid it seems to turn on (Buttons light up, the fan starts spinning) but the screen won't turn on. This is solved either by trying to close it down and let it go to sleep and try again or sometimes only by force-shutting down the computer (holding down the power-button). This issue has especially been a problem since i updated to windows 8.1, and this leads me to my final problem. I thought reinstalling the OS would fix everything, and it may do that, but i have problems figuring out how i am going to do this. I tried using the recovery function in windows 8, but it says that install media is missing and asks me to put in a disc or thumb drive. Problem is that i didn't get a disc with my new laptop. That's ok. I tried to use my serial-code to download the OS from microsofts website to a thumb drive, but oh wait. Turns out they use a new method and hardwire the code into the bios instead of including a sticker with it now. Anybody have fixes for atleast one of these problems?

VG, Norway's biggest newspaper, have tested the new version of the hybrid tablet and netbook from Sony. They lauded the battery life of over 11 hours and the solid construction, but in the end they concluded that this was not enough to make up for the fact that the Wi-Fi antenna is worthless, ruining the entire unit and making it "near useless". According to their test, the Wi-Fi would stop working only one or two light walls away from the router, something Sony has claimed requires a software update, but vg.no essentially called shenanigans on this and called the antenna assembly itself "worthless". Another criticism was that the screen can still not be angled enough, to eliminate roof light reflections. The previous version of this tablet/netbook hybrid had the exact same problem, which begs the question what the hell are Sony's engineers smoking?
