a few months ago, i woke up from a really loud thunder while in a thunderstorm, when i tried turning my pc on it just wont boot up anymore. i checked and both my ups and my psu's fuse were blown. (glass shattered) because of this, i thought that the pc wasnt working because of the defective power supply so i bought a cheap 700w generic psu online just to check if the other parts were working. when the power supply arrived, i replaced the old power supply with the new one and the pc still wouldnt turn on , however it now has shown signs of power since the cpu fan spun for half a second along with the gpu's. i tried uninstalling the gpu to check if just using my apu (ryzen 3 2200g) would work by itself with the power supply i bought but sadly, only the fans spun and there was no display at all; i also realized that the hard drive was dead and didnt spin anymore. at this point, i thought it would be best to ask a technician for help so i asked my dad who works in the capital of my province to bring it to a technician there. he said that the technician tried a different power supply and other components and told him that it was the motherboard that was broken. i ordered an asus a320m-k as the replacement motherboard and brought it to a nearby computer shop for them to install. turns out, the new 700w generic power supply i bought was actually defective and only got to squeeze out a tiny bit of power when the technician tested it. anyways, i finally got the power supply, motherboard, and my hard drive replaced however the technician said that the gpu wont work anymore as it draws only power and doesnt work anymore when it was tested. was the gpu shorted along with the other parts from the lightning strike near me that day and is there any fix for it?

Recently my generic PSU died and my family helped buying a new one since we don't really have money to be spending I bought a Thermaltake Smart 500w and everything was okay till last night. Last night the pc turned off as usual and I turned off the stabilizer as I normally do. Today I turned the stabilizer back on just to see the gpu, keyboard and mouse lights turn on for a milisecond and the power button does nothing, like if the psu short-circuit protection triggered or something, what do I do?

Greetings and thank you for taking a look! My skills: I'm an tech enthusiast but an amateur when it comes to GPU repair and electronics in general (had some classes in the past going over the basics). My issue: My graphics card causes issues in my PC where it will shut down the whole system when I have the 3x2 PCI connector connected. If I only have the 4x2 connected, then the PC will stay on without any output to a monitor. Another graphics card will work just fine. What I found so far: - I found that two of the 3x2 connectors have a short between the pairs as seen here in red (pictures below) - The board seems to be in a generally good condition (pictures below) - I checked the mosfets similar to this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTPAW0J7NKE and found no shorts there. (Here's a big image with what I assume to be the gates and the PCB lanes I checked marked with green circles and arrows) - I checked the 12V PCB lanes (3 left lanes and 4th from the right) which did not short either I would really appreciate some pointers on either where to check or a good source with more information on how to continue my hunt! So, I was changing the NIC and I swapped the GPU down too the PCIEX_16 2nd slot and the network card into the PCI lane above. I did this with the system off, but the power supply still plugged in - I realise this is quite a stupid idea but it was 6am and I wasn't thinking straight. when I wen't to turn the system back on the system wouldn't start the boot or fan cycles etc when pressing the power button on the front io headers. I tried pressing the power button directly from the motherboard but still no sign of life. Of course the only lights working is the standard motherboard lights for standby power. I removed the GPU, hard drives, ssd everything, except the cpu and the motherboard of course. I unplugged the ATX connector and plugged it back in, the systems powers on for about 5-6 seconds then turns back off onto the same standby state. Hardware: CPU: i5-6600K Motherboard: z170-A I should also mention I've tried 3 PSU's that I had laying around. I've also checked the front io pins.

Hi, wew, a friend of mine got a R9 280x vapor-x for almost 3 years, and when he was playing next to me, the display just get black, and no signal, we click to reset, and wew, dead maybe, never experienced a dead card, but i got into the bios, and enabled igpu as first display, so i logged into the windows, checked Display Adapter on device manager, and the ...R9 200 series was there, with a triangle of error, ok, did check, its windows code 43, so just to give a try, i've made a clean driver instalation, and it just get partial instaled as it says, after that, i just open to check if may be some burn signs, but no one i can see, so i decided to try a x-fire with my own R9 280x, but neither me or him have the x-fire cable, them, i've put it back on his pc, and that error, on display adapters was long gone, saying that everything is fine, tryed again with gpu output, no video, i wanna know if someone experienced something like this and may know a way to fix or at last "use" something of the gpu, i wonder if it on x-fire, if still "fine" as windows says may work, as a 2nd gpu, if it do, i will buy a xfire bridge (expensive on my country and thats why i wanna know opinions), and maybe, a way to use it like the "mining gpu with no video output that linus posted" using igpu to just do everything, and just to game, maybe extract something of gpu.

Hi all,So, let me tell you an interesting story, filled with a nasty hint of BAD LUCK and nerve wrecking "your whole life flashing before your eyes". I have a msi Z270m Mortar motherboard, in a Thermaltake Core V21 Case, during use, the led strip connected to the motherboard carrying 12v just unglued from the top of the case and because the mobo is in an horizontal position, the strip hit precisely the 2 pins marked as “JCI1” which I believe is from the case intrusion. Just to get this straight, the led strip could have fallen in many places, but it fell precisely and aligned with the 2 pins on the motherboard with the contacts of the LED Strip. One in a thousand possibilities. Fl*ck Me hah? Anyways, right after the contact, the motherboard immediately shuts down never to turn on again, not one sign of live, even after clearing CMOS. Basically the sign to turn on the PSU isn´t even sent. After some troubleshooting, and testing components I was pretty sure only the mobo was wrecked, so I´ve ordered a new, same line motherboard and the other components are working fine with no issue. Hurray! This is where it gets interesting, a normal person would just thrown away the old mobo and get along with his/her life. It just so happens I MAY have an OCD where I hord computer components and I have a really hard time throwing stuff away if I´m not 100% sure they are unfixable, and even they aren´t fixable, I´ll probably reporpuse them. For exemple, if I cannot fix the mobo, I´ll just put it in a frame for a nice painting on the wall. Nite. Anyways, I don´t want to give up on this one, so I´ve checked the PCB extensively to look for signs of any blew or torched point, but I couldn´t find anything. NOTHING. Physically the motherboard seems to be fine. Hence, yesterday I connected a old PSU that I have to the motherboard and tricked the PSU into thinking to turn on using a Jumper (while using another jumper in "POWER SW” located in the motherboard). To my surprise the motherboard lights up and the fans connected to it do turn on, and the CPU light turns on (which is normal since I didn´t have any CPU placed in the socket, my 7700k is on the new mobo). After some research and some more serious eye concentration checking the connections on the board, I´m pretty sure the 12V went directly to the BIOS chip. And that´s the problem. The BIOS CHIP! At this moment, I find myself with 3 possibilities. 1- I have a corrupted BIOS, that can be easily fixed placing a crappy CPU into the board and flashing the BIOS and installing it again. 2- I have a completly destroyed BIOS but an healthy chip, in which case I have to use a flashcat and install the bios from another PC using the USB adapter to the JSPI1 connector. 3- I have a completly destroyed BIOS and a completly destroyed ROM in the chip in which case its just a paper weight for an ant. And the only way to salvage it, is to weld a new BIOS Chip (which i dont know if I can buy one online, if so, I can try it, I guess...) Having that said, i´m trying to make up my mind if its indeed fixable and if it justifies to buy a crappy intel celeron G3930 and flash the bios and if that doesn´t work, try to use the flashcat adaptor. If it comes to this, the overall price to repair it myself will be somewhat close to a new mobo. What do you guys think? I really appreciate any suggestions or past experiences that any of you might and that could help me? Sorry for the long post and thank you in advance!

I have previously posted on the forum before about a popping noise from my PC every time I switched my Belkin extension block on, see thread: ... it was recommended to me that I leave the extension block on. And just use the power button on the top of my case (Enthoo Evolv ITX). So that is what I have been doing for the past few months. However, I have just come back from work today and switched my PC on (using the button at the top of the case - like I always normally do) and there was a large like 'popping' / 'arching' / 'sparking' sort of noise, and I think I saw a very brief flash of light (although this could have been my LED strip lights inside the case turning on then off very quickly, not sure) and then the computer shut off. It's like the PC momentarily powered up for like 0.5 seconds, the fans starting spinning a little, but then everything went back off. I have turned it off at the back of the PC and I have switched the extension block off. I am wary to try and turn it back on. Does anyone have any recommendations on what to do? Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thank you in advance, Oli.

Hi guys, my friend recently build his first pc, but when he was instaling cpu he placed it in wrong position and he broke pin off and shorted it (it was ryzen 1400) and here is my question is it possible that the cpu take with it gpu ?

I plugged a fan into my Asus Sabertooth Z97 motherboard fan header while the PC was running. I'm pretty I shorted the motherboard because it no longer boots, and yes I did a strip down test with no luck. The only LED that is lit up on the mobo is the green LED at the bottom right of the mobo. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
