  1. I recently bought two USB 3.0 ports and power buttons for the front panel of my G5. I spliced together the power button according to this guide. I'm having a problem with adding the front USB ports, I used a file to enlarge the firewire port to the size of the USB port. The holes are a little too wide for the USBs and the ports don't stay in. I tried to secure it with JB Weld Metal Putty, it failed. So I have to make something that attaches to the backside of the front of the case that can withstand being plugged in somewhat forcefully. I was thinking about using this, which would give it support on the back. The trouble is that I need to permanently attach it to the front. I was thinking about using super glue, nails or screwing it in. Any ideas on how I can do this? I know I'm doing a terrible job of describing what I'm talking about so I attached photos. Feel free to ask questions! Also, I want to do the same with the headphone jack; I'm having trouble finding a 3.5mm combo jack to front panel audio header cable. Does anyone know about something like this. I don't want to spend much. I can do some soldering if I have to. Thanks, AidanOnEverything
  2. Hi All I was given today an Apple PowerMac G5, and I am trying to find and install OS X Leopard 10.5 Server on to it. I have been trying to find some discs for it only, but to not much luck. Do you know where I could find them? Alternatively, anyone in the UK who could send them to me for a shortwhile (2 weeks) then that would be much appreciated. I would pay postage obviously. Thanks!
  3. Hey all I have been trying to get my Keyboard and Mouse to share with my Powermac G5 through Synergy, however I have had no avail. What would you guys suggest? I don't need anything fancy, just something that will hook my Windows 10 machine's keyboard and mouse to my powermac through a network KVM thanks
  4. Hey all, hope y'all having a great day! I'm back again with another post and this time I have upped my build to a new level. Now before everyone starts suggesting to get a standard ATX full tower case, I am hellbent on using the Powermac G5 case and I will not be changing my plans to use it. Now with that said. I plan on building my personal PC inside the 2005 Powermac G5 case as seen here (link to Ebay): http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PowerMac-G5-empty-enclosure-case-build-custom-Mac-PC-Hackintosh-B-grade-/162188602959?hash=item25c331ae4f:g:wBoAAOSwh-1W2oJG I have also decided that this build below suits my needs exactly and are within my budget (link to PC Part Picker): http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/RKTH3F Now knowing that the G5 case doesn't accommodate for standard ATX form factors, I want to get some opinions and suggestions on how I would mod the internals and the rear of the case to mount the motherboard and have the PCI slots line up with the PCI IO brackets. Some people have put up walkthroughs, blog posts and youtube videos, however, I still don't quite understand the process fully but am really keen to undertake this project. I am thinking about installing a Motherboard mounting plate but am unsure if this would put the slots out of alignment with the IO brackets. I am welcome to any comments and suggestions Thanks
  5. Hey all! I just bought myself a 2005 Powermac G5 for a steal on ebay (Only $130 AUD when all other fully working G5 systems costed around $400 minimum here in Aus). I realised that my system is coming with a Quadro FX4500 in it and it had me thinking. Would it be possible to buy a second FX4500 and put the two in an SLI? I am doing various upgrades to it all-around anyway: RAM from 2GB to 16GB ($99 AUD) Adding a 1TB Hard Drive ($99 AUD) Adding an Airport Extreme card for wifi ($30 AUD) Upping from OSX 10.4 to OSX 10.5 Leopard ($65 AUD) Adding a second Nvidia Quadro FX4500? ($99 AUD) Also are there any more beefy Graphics cards that could outperform the Quadro FX4500 that would still be compatible with the late 2005 Powermac G5 as I want to try and squeeze as much power from this rig as possible (more of a fun project thing rather than practicality) Thanks all
  6. Hey All! For a while I have been planning to take my early model 2003 Powermac G5 sporting a 1.6Ghz IBM G5 single core CPU and upgrading to the late 2005 Dual 2.7Ghz dual core IBM CPUs. And whilst I'm at it, upping my system to 16GB DDR3 1333Mhz RAM, and an Nvidia Geforce 7800GTX 512mb GPU. I know my current G5 Motherboard won't support all of this and so obviously I need to get one that supports the Dual 2.7Ghz IBM Dual core CPUs. Will this motherboard support this conversion: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Apple-Power-Mac-G5-Dual-Processor-630-6395-Main-Logic-Board-NEW-/302050067083?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368 with these CPUs: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Apple-630-7008-T6891-Power-Mac-G5-2-7GHz-Liquid-Cooled-Processor-Assembly-/361420380003?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368 Extra links: GPU: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Inno3D-GeForce-7800GTX-256MB-DDR3-TV-Ut-2x-DVi-PCI-Express-/321787404722?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368 RAM: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/16GB-KIT-8X-2GB-4200-ECC-Unbuffered-Apple-Power-Mac-G5-Quad-Dual-Core-Memory-Ram-/221980917317?hash=item33af17fe45:g:Bw0AAOSwUdlWgunD Thanks all!
  7. Hey all! After getting my brand spanking new (pre-owned) Powermac G5, I realised that I will need a switch of some sort as having two sets of peripherals on my desk would not work in any way due to my now dual PC setup. I was wondering if there were any peripheral switches that would meet my needs? (Details below) Needs: A switch that I can connect my USB Keyboard and Mouse, My 3.5' Speakers, and my Displayport Monitor, and switch them between my Workstation PC and PowerMac G5. Switch must have Displayport and DVI outputs Peripherals 1x USB keyboard 1x USB Mouse 1x 3.5' Speakers 1x Displayport Monitor Custom PC IO: 8x USB 1x Displayport output 1x 3.5' audio jack Powermac G5 IO: 3x USB 1x 3.5' Audio+Mic 1x 3.5' Mic 1x 3.5' Stereo 1x DVI output Thanks all!
  8. Hey all! Last Thursday, I created a post regarding using a 2005 Apple Powermac G5 Case for my new gaming and editing rig, which can be found here: But today I have three new questions regarding the use of this case for my needs: This question regards the front IO on the G5 case. How would I be able to hook up the front IO (Power, Headphone/Mic, USB and firewire) to an ATX motherboard? (specifically the Asus X99 Deluxe II) Secondly, would a Gigabyte Geforce G1 GTX 1080 GPU fit within the case using this rear ATX conversion mod (http://www.thelaserhive.com/product/g5-atx-kit-psu-holder/)? What are the dimensions of the case and card? And lastly, how would I go about making the apple logo on the side panels glow white when turned on, just like macbooks Thanks all again for taking time to answer! I will create a build log and video log when I begin this build, and I will post here for y'all to see!
  9. Hello everyone! I am planning a build for a new pc. I currently have an old laptop, as my job keeps me moving between countries but in 3 months I will be coming back on a permanent basis to my home city. So I am planning to keep the laptop for work and simple stuff (over the last 5 years I bought 8 Gb ddr3 1600 and a samsung 850 evo 250 Gb SSD, so the laptop is holding out very nicely. Also I take good care of it, maintenance wise.) and build a new pc using and old Powermac G5 I got for cheap. The new pc will be used as a budget gaming station with a steam link wired connection to the living room tv. I will mostly use emulators and Bluetooth controller based games on the living room and the pc will also serve as a machine to run some more recent games that I have on my library but I never managed to play on my current laptop(like Witcher 3 or Doom). The case modding on the Powermac G5 will be mostly a fun project and I know how to proceed for the most part. I will be using some power tools from my fathers garage and I will order an ATX motherboard tray online. These are the desired parts: http://www.performance-pcs.com/lian-li-replacement-removable-motherboard-tray-pc-6x.html#Questions-Answersqa[cT0zMjM0] and the cables from the front panel of the Powermac G5 case: https://www.ebay.com/sch/?_nkw=CBL084L&clk_rvr_id=394368884147 I will flip the orientation of the tray so it fits the case and assemble the build upside down inside it. I will repurpose the original case fans and try to keep the modular design of the case. No need to make it complicated. For the build itself is where I need your help. I am planning to go easy on the spending and go true budget with a ryzen APU build. I also have an old lcd monitor lying around for immediate use. If I feel unsatisfied I can upgrade later on. I have chosen a local store to get all my parts from (they have an online store and a physical store in my city where I can pick up the parts). Also, by buying all in the same store I can try to get something extra from them. For example, I can ask them for a AM4 mounting kit for the new fan or to upgrade an old Ryzen b350 mobo firmware before I take it away. Also, having the warranty support on a local accessible big retailer is a plus for me. This is my selection so far: https://i.imgur.com/jx6QA4z.png Ill repurpose my SSD for the build, restoring the original HDD to the laptop. I also have some extra HDD´s I can use if needed. I will not buy a GPU until the annoying crypto dwarves go back to sleep in Khazad-dûm. The APU should be enough for now as my habits are not that extravagant. I'm ok if I have to play HoMM3. Later on Ill consider upgrading to a dedicated GPU or even new memory in a few years. I am also conflicted regarding the necessity for a new Cooler fan for the APU versus using the stock one from AMD. Also conflicted regarding buying a cheap off brand 80+ PSU or going with the Cooler Master one in the list. As I said before, I have 3 months until I move, so I will not buy the parts right now. For now I am exploring my options and would like your honest feedback. This would a first for me as I never had the possibility to do it myself before. I'm sure I need to change something and I am sure there is always someone with more knowledge and good advice to share. Also, I'm sorry for my English, it is not my native language but I tried my best. Please consider helping me out and giving me some tips. TY!
  10. So I'm about 80% of the way through my Powemac G5 ATX conversion and because there were already some pieces cut in the rear panel I didn't get much choice of how to do this. Anyway I now have to get a non modular 1KW PSU in here and I just got the velcro i need to mount it but now the problem is I don't know where to place it. The mod didn't alow for space enough at the rear for the PSU because of the before mentioned cuts not made by me and I only realised just now anyway I have come up with a few places to mount it and the points for and against them so please pick the one you think is the best one Front bottom: Would tangle up and potentially bend the front IO cable but makes the case more stabile and maxes available GPU space. Makes HDD mount tricky and covers a small piece of an ATX motherboard(but Il be using a DTX board for now) Half way up and all the way to the front on the motherboard side panel facing the other sidepanel: Looks epic, would make HDD mount nice and easy but limits GPU length to only ~275mm Same as above but facing the front of the case: Looks kinda odd and I fear the PSU might wobble and break loose while moving the case but would have 335mm of GPU length clearance and HDD mount is still simple. PSU mounted through the perforation in the front panel with screws: 350mm of GPU clearance, HDD mount is simple and the mount is secure but it blocks ~50-60% of the front panel and removes the possibility of front 120mm fans. The reason I mention the GPU clearance is that the R9 290 I plan on using is 310mm and the next best GPU I have around is a GTX 550 TI Thanks for any help!
  11. I started planning to redo my Powermac G5. I had a h100 in it. But it died a few weeks ago. Now i am considering wasting 400euros on an awesome custom loop. It would only be for my 3570k and a 670 or 880 depends on how much i waste in the steam sale. I already choose most of my parts. Currently i am struggeling on deciding radiator size. It would go in the bottom of my G5 where my psu is located right now. I can fit a 360 most likely but I am not sure wether i should go for 30mm, 45mm or even 60mm thickness. I have about 9cm from bottom to mainboard but also need space to hide my 8pin. Would I need a 60mm to cool properly or is 45 enough? Sorry for the bad pictures. Didn't feel like making it look pretty for you yes the fans are held in place by tape. Don't worry i had the h100 screwed in. I had nearly all cables sleeved but my old psu died on me 2 weeks before the h100 died. I am going to sleeve them again when summer holidays begin here in germany and I dont have to sit in school everyday. The red and green wires are going to my ghetto powerbutton but that problem i will safe for my next post. Here you can see the space in between psu (nearly the same as 60mm rad with fans) and mb But I also can't decide on fans. I really dislike my Sp120. They did the job but sound like a starting jet. Should I go for the Nf f12 or the nb eloop (http://www.aquatuning.de/product_info.php/info/p14175_Noiseblocker-NB-eLoop-B12-PS-Bionic-fan---120x120x25mm--.html) They are about the same price but both are stupid expensive. The nff12s cost about 22euros while the noiseblockers only cost 18. I hope you will thake your time to read my post and help me with my problem. I will also start a build log when I actually start my built
  12. As many of you probably know by now, I've been slowly chipping away at my first real case mod. This project has been in the works for almost a year; I got the PowerMac G5 in April of 2018 and decided after spending hours troubleshooting it, that I wanted to modify it to fit ATX hardware in August of that year. Thus the research phase began. If you go on Google and look up "powermac g5 mod", odds are I've read and watched every build log on the first page and a half of results. This phase continued for a few months while I planned how I wanted to do the mod. I also talked with people who have done mods like this before, aka @DrMacintosh. The next step was deciding on parts to use. I decided on the X99 platform as the base for this mod. I had been spending some time with the lovely people in the X58 Xeon/i7 Discussion Thread, which fed me a lot of information about Intel's HEDT platform and how it had been aging. X58 is 10 years old at this point however, and I don't really want something that old in my new gaming PC and workstation. So I popped over to the used market and started looking at X99 prices, since I knew it was still modern and the CPUs perform pretty well by today's standards. Over the summer and fall of 2018, I went about gutting the G5 case entirely. By this time I knew how I wanted to modify it and most of what I'd need to fit an ATX motherboard in. Apologies for lack of pictures, there were technical difficulties and I ended up losing all my documentation of most of the project . Hope y'all like to read, this isn't a very image-heavy thread. A couple years ago, I got an Athlon MP system from a church friend who was looking to rid of some of their old computers. That's not as important to my story as the case that system came in is. The Athlon MPs were housed in a Lian Li PC-61: This case is important to this project due to its motherboard tray and back panel. The PowerMac G5 is extremely proprietary, and won't house an ATX motherboard with all 7-8 expansion slots without some fairly extensive modding. The PC-61's motherboard tray and back panel slide out with the removal of 4 thumbscrews on the back, leaving you with something like this: I knew when I saw it that this was how I could mount an ATX motherboard in the G5. So I took some power tools to the G5, cut out a big hole in the back(it's not pretty due to the tool I was using, but it's functional), cut down the back panel just a little bit, sanded everything down, JB welded it in place, and boom! ATX motherboard support! However, my journey was nowhere near complete. I still had to figure out mounting for my power supply, hard drives and SSDs, and still source parts. Back to research, it was. Not much was helpful this time around, most people reused the G5's drive cage. Not an option for me, that cage was brutally ripped out of the case with most of everything else. Keep looking. By the time I reached this point, through a chain of events, I had started and stopped working for @CUDAcores89. Long story short, I got his X99 rig as payment. Housed in a Fractal Design Define R5. With removable drive cages. The stars had aligned perfectly, or something. I tore the hardware out of the case as soon as I got it home so I could do some test fits. I found places for the drive cage and the power supply, and started ordering various parts from Amazon and eventually Ebay to finish the project. By this point, the date was roughly 2 weeks ago if my memory serves my correctly. pakidges started arriving, and my hard drive cage was JB welded into the G5 case. Featured in this picture are also my Crucial MX500 SSD and WD Blue HDD. Again, not exactly pretty, but functional. This was my first time using JB Weld, give me a break. Gosh. "But Crunchy, what did you order from Ebay?" I'm glad you asked! My GeForce GTX 780 has served me well for sure over the year and a half I've had it, but I thought it was time to move on to something better. That something arrived today, taking the form of an EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 SC: I know the lighting and quality is bad. Bleh. This was to be my crown jewel of the build(in a manner of speaking). I started doing tests(had to figure out some technical difficulties, thakns to @Stefan Payne for attempting to help me through them). Everything fit together nicely, and cable management was surprisingly decent. How is the power supply secured, you ask? Industrial strength Velcro. I didn't want to fabricate a mount for it. It's been holding up pretty well. Is that Lego between the power supply and CPU heatsink? Yes. Why the heck did you put Lego there? There's only half a centimeter of space between the GPU PCB and heatsink, the Lego is there to make sure the PCB stays off the heatsink so it doesn't kill itself. FINAL THOUGHTS: This was a fun project overall. I can't wait to do it again in 10 years with a Mac Pro 2019 and a G5. FUTURE PLANS: I'll want to wire up the front panel power button at the very least. If I could get some intake fans mounted as well, that would be nice too. I may cut a bigger hole in the back so I can mount a 120mm exhaust fan. Eventually, I'll have to find some way to upgrade storage.
