I was just curios how would a top tier gpu perform in gaming/workload on a pci 4x4 (which should be equal to gen2x16) compare to a full gen3x16 or gen4x16. only benchmark i found where from 4090 on gen3 or 3070 on gen2/3. any links would be great i am just curious after watching a few yt vids. how much actual fps would someone lose by going so low

i'm looking to get a USB 3.0 expansion card to put into a PCIE 2.0 8x wired 4x slot. what should i be looking at in terms of bottlenecking and speed? motherboard is a dell 09kpnv in a precision t3500

Every generation of PCIe is twice as fast as the last. This means 16 lanes of PCIe 2.0 is equal to 8 lanes of 3.0 and 4 lanes of 4.0. However, if I plug a 4.0 SSD into a 3.0 slot, it'll use just 4 lanes, cutting the bandwidth in half. And using a 2.0 slot would cut that in half again, leaving you with a fourth of the bandwidth. My question is if there's a way to use all 16 lanes in a 2.0 slot. To adapt them to the 4 lane connector on the 4.0 SSD and get the full speed. Is there an adapter card I can use? I would appreciate any help.

Trying to upcycle some m.2 SATA drives that were going to be disposed. I am running an older system. my mobo is dx58so and cpu is w3690. I have an empty PCIe 2.0 slot and I was wondering if I could raid 4 of the m.2 SATA drives on a card plugged into the PCIe 2.0 slot as a boot drive. (it has to be cheap, I am not running this retro build because I am a hipster). If it matters I have a GTX 1080 plugged into my other PCIe 2.0 slot. Not sure if it matters, but my SATA ports only run 2.0. My wife has a machine with DDR4 and NVME and I would really like to see the snappiness on my machine. (I am hoping it is not all from the DDR4). Anyone have any recommendations for a cheap (50 bucks or lower, used is an option) bootable PCIe card that can raid 0 4 m.2 SATA drives for a noticeable performance boost over SATA 2.0? (or have I seen too many Linus videos achieving crazy things?)

I currently run a 2070 super that seems to be faulty and cant run at stock speeds and so I've needed to underclock it, I've been able to comfortably run most games with little to no artifacting up until cyberpunk released, now I've seemingly reached the limit of the card while keeping it underclocked. Because of all this I'm finally considering getting a new gpu, only problem is I cheeped out on the motherboard during the initial build of my pc and only have a pcie 2.0 x16 slot for a gpu, from what I've read the memory bandwidth of a 2.0 slot is 8Gbps at a x16, while the 3070 card itself runs at around 15-16Gbps, will installing the 3070 in the pcie 2.0 cause noticeable bottlenecking? should I invest in a new motherboard first?

First of all I am new on this forum, altho have been following LTT for a long time now. Anyway I came on here as I got a "new" 128 Gb nvme m.2 drive and I want to install it in my old pc Wich is a HP 7900 minitower running on e8400 cpu. As you may already know that's pretty archaic so the motherboard doesn't have any nvme slot ( heck even it's drives are SATA 2 ) . But I want to try anyway , as I red online you could use nvme drives on the pcie slot using some adapter. My question : Will it work ? Those adapters are only pcie3, pcie 3 it's backwards compatible with pcie 2 so technically it should work , right ? But that's unlikely the only factor deciding it , does it need some special bios that only newer motherboards have ? Well I don't know , and altho it would be fun try, would like to have a general idea if I should even bother for a start . So I came here for your wisdom. Thank you in advance .

So, I'm planning a new system and I'll be using an Intel i9-12900KS and an Asus ProArt Z690 for the motherboard. I need to connect 5 hard drives and configure it in RAID 5, and I figured the most sensible way to do this would be with a RAID card. My concern is that most of the cards I can find are PCIe 2.0 and take 8 lanes. The ProArt configures its lanes 8x/8x from the CPU, for two slots, but I'm worried that introducing a 2.0 device to a 5.0 link will hurt the graphics card's performance. - If I have to configure those 8 lanes at 2.0 speeds, will all the lanes direct from the CPU have to be 2.0? - In fact, is it even possible to configure from 5.0 all the way down to 2.0? - Would it be more sensible to use the chipset slot, electrically wired for only 4x? If it has to be configured down to 2.0, I'll only get 2.0 x4 speeds, but would that matter? Any help and suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

Tldr: I know that it won't run at full speed. I just want to know will it work as a main boot drive without any hassles? Or will it somehow be incompatible with my old Pcie 2.0 PC? And will it be faster than my current HDD, as expected? Also, how long are m.2 nvme drives? From googling, I believe my pc has 1x Pcie 2.0 slot(s), which can go up to 330MB/s. Even though that's nowhere near a gen4 nvme's full potential, it'll still be faster than my current HDD lol. It's not that expensive and it's something I can likely use in a new computer later. Even tho I don't use Windows, DirectStorage sound pretty awesome, and who knows what else the future will bring? Also, how much disk space does windows 11 system files take? Iirc, my current system files on Zorin OS Lite 16.2 barely traits up any space.

Hello, I have a question regarding PCI-e 2.0 (x16 Mechanically, x8 Electrically) .. Does it noticeably impact current gen GPU performance? (Its too dark to take decent pictures of black on black things right now so you get a bad diagram of what there is and because I forgot to put a legend or anything on it, the pink circles mark the SATA plugs I'm using) Okay, so I replaced my PSU after it died and while hooking it up I ran into a small problem. There aren't enough spots to plug into on the new PSU for all the things I unplugged from the old one. This has left me with a bit of weirdness to figure out. As you can hopefully see in the diagram, I do have a spare (not in use) one of those PSU-cables-that-look-like-PCI-E-but-I-don't-think-are-them-actually [I think they're called EPS maybe] so my first thought was to look for an adapter that would connect those maybe-EPS to the SATA power and just take the whole molex bit out entirely but then I realised that the molex to probably-not-PCI-E has the two SATA I'm using on it. I found male to male EPS things that look like they would work to connect that spare cable from the PSU to the weird molex-SATA-EPS(?) cable but is that a stupid idea? My hardware knowledge is rusty and was never heavy on cables in the first place so I'm not sure if putting what essentially amounts to an extension into a power cable thingy is a good idea. FURTHER INFOS: The red SATA power cable doesn't just end in nothing, it goes through the plate the motherboard is mounted on and hooks up to stuff, I just didn't add that in. Adapt is just what I wrote on the SATA end of the SATA to molex adapter thing. The end of the weird molex-SATA-EPS(?) wire is just hanging out next to the PSU becuse there aren't enough places to plug it in there, its not actually hooked in or this whole thing would be a bit of a moot point. My computer (minus one SSD because I just noticed it wasn't on there unless there are two on there when you look, then I apparently added it): PCPartPicker The male to male EPS thingy I found: Amazon Currently has Windows 10 on it, don't think it matters since I'm asking about cables but its in the list of things to make sure to include so there you go. Uh, can't include the BIOS version because its not hooked up but I don't think that matters either? I hope? Because this is one big heavy computer and I really don't want to move it back into place to hook up to turn on to check the version of the BIOS and then move it back and open it back up for messing with cables more. When the PCIEX16_1 slot on my motherboard is set to "Auto" or "Gen 3", Windows begins to load and quickly goes black. When I set the slot to Gen 2, it works perfectly. I am trying to decide if I need to replace one of my components, and determine which one. Let's say, hypothetically, that someone has a motherboard with a PCIe 'x' slot. If the chipset and BIOS supported a CPU that supports PCIe 'y' revision, would it work on the motherboard with the 'x' revision? For example, HYPOTHETICALLY, a person with a motherboard that has PCIe 2.0 and that person wanted to upgrade their CPU to an Ivy Bridge processor, which supports PCIe 3.0, could that person do it? I've got a pretty old desktop PC I've been using for games and work. It worked great up till yesterday, Today for some reason my GPU won't provide a video display, will my onboard graphics port worked fine. The GPU Fan is spinning so I hope it not dead cause I don't have a replacement right now. I've tried to troubleshoot it on my own. ✓ Changed VGA Cable ✓ Took GPU out, cleaned it and placed it back in ✓ Tired a different display output other than VGA, Hooked up an HDMI cable with a LCD to see if it gave out a signal, still no luck I haven't tried anything BIOS related since I'm not experienced with it.
