Hello there, so my dad runs a photography studio here in Spain and oddly enough, the volume of clients has increased a lot after the lockdowns so now a network storage solution is required to keep the data organized and secure. Right now we only have 2 editing stations and both have like three 2Tb drives shared in lan via windows, however it is very inconsistent and, at the end of the day they end up just juggling USBs back and forth. I was wandering which are the specs I should aim for (without taking into account hard drives) or if we are better with a NAS box than with a custom system. Thx

Hello, I have a TrueNas server setup (Basic specs are at the end). I have a couple questions... If I put a 2TB Nvme in the server and set it up as a shared drive to 3 PC's. Then point all 3 of those PC's "My Documents", My Pictures", "Downloads", Etc. folders target location to folders on the 2TB nvme. Will this cause any issues if all 3 pcs are logged in as me (same log in on each) at the same time? Will you notice that it is not local storage? Ie: slower, etc. Is there a better way to do this? I tend to download everything 3 times because I forget to move the file to the server to use on the other PC's. Here are the basic specs... The whole house is on a 10 gig network. TrueNas Intel Core i5-10400 CPU @ 2.90GHz 96Gigs DDR4 72TB of spinning disks (10 drives, mostly wd gold) SSD 250gig (OS) 10Gig Intel Nic (2 ports) 3PC's (windows 11) i7 10700K 2.5gig nic's 32 gigs ram Nvme drives for os and programs Thank you for your advice in advance, it is appreciated!

Im looking at getting a NAS, i know Linus wouldn't go here, but i need one for file storage across my network. Im gonna be backing up my Music and some video there, as well as placing all my photos and using it as a server to be able to stream and view all of that on the move on my iPhone. However i am looking at getting a IP Camera or two in/around my house as the neighbours may be getting a extension and will be making security a harder thing for our home, at first I'm planning on a single camera inside with maybe a dummy box outside. As for machines hitting it, it will be my main gaming machine, my HTPC and my MacBook and a couple of iPhones and iPads as well. I have a budget of around £1,000, maybe a little more if the correct is a little more, I'm excluding drives as ill probably be throwing in a couple of 3TB WD Reds to start with, then adding more and more, larger drives as i need to do so. However I am interested in M.2/SSD cache-ing and Ram upgrades at a later date, even a CPU update if you can do that? I like the look of the Synology User Interface in its software, but i like the ease of use of the QNAP units, and am torn to which to get, id like either a 5, 6 or 8 bay unit. Thanks in advance.

Dear community i am looking for a bit of help. I currently have a Dell Poweredge T20 server with a Xeon processor and 16 gigs of ram used for Network Storage (Editing Photos With Lightroom etc.), Webserver and Plex server. I am using 2x WD red 3TB drives configured in Ubuntu software raid 1. Currently i am getting a transfer speed of 35-48mb/s, and i aim to be at least above 100mb/s Also the search time is very slow at times. So my question is - where is the first bottleneck and what can i do to get some more performance out of my network storage. Will a dedicated NAS work, is it the drives - maybe i should go full SSD... thoughts?

Inspired by Linus's server tour, I want to set up my old external drive and my even older NAS as a data-loss-proof... Thing. I'm not big on the code and network side of tech, so for all I know, I need an PC to run the whole thing, but from the looks of things it should be fairly easy. I can USB my 3 TB external to the router, which can be accessed. Then, I can add the NAS to the router via LAN and use software to run it. The biggest unknown is in setting up the main 3 TB with a folder that is backed up to the NAS - that's where I want the most advice. This is a learning thing as much as anything for me - give it a go, try it out, have some fun. Any advice would be most appreciated, regardless of relevance!

I'm building a network for my business and i'm trying to figure out if i have identified what i need correctly. I don't wanna get something that isn't for my purpose and end up wasting money. So i any of you can help me figure out what i'm missing, it would be a great help. So if i explain the scenario, 1. my company provides video production services. 2. We currently have 8 devices that needs to be connected to the network including an iMac, 3 Laptops, 1 storage PC, 2 network printers, and a TV. 3. I have a 100Mbps FTTH connection. The provided router model is ZTE ZXHN F660. 4. I need really fast transfer speeds between devices because we use red cameras and most of the files we transfer would bigger than 500GB. 5. I need WiFi as well The switch I have selected is this http://us.dlink.com/products/business-solutions/16-port-copper-gigabit-switch/ I'm pretty sure i'm missing something here because i really do not know anything about networking so i'm learning as i go. What else do i need? Is this switch suitable for the job. Thank you so much!

Heya, So I currently have the problem that in my dark base pro 900 i had to take out all the hard drive cages so i had room for my watercooling system. No way to install them on the back or anything. Now I have a 1TB 850 pro in the back and a 240GB m.2 for my operating system. But 1TB just isn't enough for my use. I'm looking for some kind of external solution that doesn't ruin the looks. I wouldn't mind doing it with some kind of network solution or just some janky cable stuff. However I am planning to set up some kind of home server, so if it's possible with that it would be nice. I wouldn't mind setting up a 10Gbit connection from my pc to some kind of network attached storage or. The problem with networl storage (at least from what i read on the internet) is that it doesn't really work reliable for gaming. If you think otherwise and know a working solution feel free to tell me. And I want it to be able to get a few HDDs into some sort of raid (not sure exactly what i really want for that, but I at least want the possibilty to do so in the future). Hope someone out there can help me PS: sorry if there are any spelling mistakes ^^ not natively english

Hello everyone, I am new to the forum however I am in need of some help. At my home office, I have my gaming/editing PC setup. With this I have a 500gb external SSD as well as a 4TB external HDD. Its worth mentioning that the 4TB HDD has its own power source and does not run off of USB power. My dilemma is this, I am a photographer and videographer and would like to set up some kind of NAS that would allow me to access my files on the 4TB HDD from any computer on any internet connection. To my understanding, a NAS only allows access from within the same network. However I would like to have access outside of my home network, at location such as my office. Is there a way to achieve this while still maintaining a hard USB 3.0 connection from my HDD to my PC? Please help. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I want to build a NAS server which is good for streaming videos. accessing files (mostly media) and also be able to download any files even when I am outside my hometown. Can anyone suggest me a good build along with how to enable everything I need. Second thing, I want to know is how to manage the backup of my NAS? RAID or any other efficient way of having the backup so if one drive fails, I don't loose the data and just swipe the broken one with a new one.

I'm debating on the best method for a network storage setup for my condo. I will be setting up network storage for backups and media storage and I'm leaning towards just hooking up an SSD dock to my router because it's the less expensive solution. My router(Synology RT1900AC) has some nice built in NAS options that should work well. If anyone with experience/knowledge can offer advice/opinions, I would appreciate it. Thanks, TidaLWaveZ

Hello Community, So I want a home NAS to back up my various computers and laptops and also to have my work files on the network so I can switch what computer i am using and not have to bugger around with emailing it to myself or saving to a stick. I know Dropbox and other cloud stuff is nice, but I really want my information on hardware I own. My question is: does anyone know of or have any decent pre-built NAS? Price matters, I want this to be a lower budget project, I don't really want to build a PC and go the free NAS route, I like the idea of the out of the box, (maybe have to stick a few WD reds in), plug in and go. What are your experiences, what have you bought and loved/hated, what would you recommend?

I currently have a NAS setup as an ISCSI drive which all my games and some programs are installed on this is a single drive setup. Does anyone know what kind of performance increase I would see if I was to add a second drive in RAID0. I have a Gigabit connection to the NAS so the network is not a bottleneck at the moment. Automatic backups are done twice daily so I'm not worried about redundancy; I'm just interested in whether it would be worth the money to add a second drive to improve the performance.

Wondering what the general opinion on prebuilt NAS enclosures, mostly because I'm looking for a budget friendly solution. I'm looking at a Buffalo Link station 441e. I believe it has a Marvell ARMADA 1.20 GHz with 512 MB of DDR3. Will that be sufficient for a home NAS? Connectivity specss check out for what I need I believe. Just unsure of what else.

Hello! I am planning on building a Nas / Server for my house. I do a lot of video editing, do lots of Project Work [ Word, Excel etc.] ,Love to create content and have a lot of media. The thing is that lots of my data gets mixed up around the house, in the laptops, my PCs and finding them is quite hard when there are deadlines and lots of work to be done. So I thought of the Idea of having a Nas / Server in my house to centralise all of that. The Computers in my house: 1. Acer Laptop [Win xp] 2. Toshiba Laptop [Win 8] 3. Custom Built Home PC [win xp] 4. Compaq PC [Win 7] [ultimate] 5. MY GAMING RIG!!!! [Win 7] [ Home Premium ] Other Handheld devices: 1. The usual IPhone, Ipod, Ipad 2. Samsung Tab, S4 Clearly Lots of devices at home 5 computers, and 5 Handheld devices. I do have experience with PCs but not with servers, I hear they are somewhat the same when building with consumer hardware. Thats why I need your help. I did have a plan of how much storage like 2 TB just to get things going then later upgrade. I dont know whether to go with a Atx board or a Mini Itx board. If it was Itx i did see the Cooler Master Elite 120, i thought it had some potential as a server case. The processor and the Mobo is where Im stuck. For Ram i think 4 GB would be enough, and a 400w PSU. For the OS Windows Home Server 2011 seems quite nice. My budget would be around 150$, but its best to get it as cheap as possible. Nothing Fancy just a normal home server. I would like to know more about switches and add-in cards for Gigabit bit second [2 and 4] I also would like to know more about Nas' and servers, and what can be acheived besides network storage. If possible setup remote desktop control over the network. Pls Follow up as soon as possible. Thnx ! Blaze

First off, I couldn't find a post for this so sorry if this type of thread comes up a lot, but here is my question: I am looking for a fairly simple but reliable and somewhat fast NAS for my home network. It would be nice to have a central place to put all my legal movies and music and stuff of the like so I don't have to worry about messing about with external hard drives and stuff like that. Here is my wishlist for the NAS Between $400-500, but if something is a little bit over and very worth it, make a case for it and let me know why its really worth it Some sort of RAID support would be nice, redundancy and all that Does not have to have disks, I have a few spares before I pick up some proper HDDs for it 2 bays minimum, 4 bays would be nice Have a fairly friendly UI, I am not great with networking, but I am also not computer illiterate. Just be from a good reputable brand. Am I asking too much for the price point? Anyways, thanks in advanced for the help. I am fairly good with computers, but networking is definitely my weak spot, so I appreciate any help or advice or recommendations you fine gents and gals have to offer.
