So I recently subscribed to LTT on Floatplane for the first time. I've been sorting through the years and years of content there, and I wanted to ask what your guys' favorite FP Exclusives are.

So I’ve found out that LTX 2024 isn’t happening, and this really bums me out. I wasn’t able to make it this year because I live in the southern US and plane tickets to Vancouver are 700 freedom eagles for two people. I was going to try to make it next year, but now I can’t. So I had an idea: What if the community organized an LTX-like event for next year? Maybe sponsored by LMG? We might be able to rally the community and get some of the same sponsors and companies out if we got other creators involved. This is probably an unlikely scenario, but I wanted to throw the idea out there just in case it isn’t totally bogus.

EDIT: New information seemingly has come out from an ex-worter at LMG. It would be nice to hear what LMG has to say about that too: ----- I WANT TO MAKE THIS VERY CLEAR: THIS IS NOT A CALL TO ACTION OR TO GET OUT THE PITCHFORKS AND TORCHES. I WANT CLARIFICATION AND UNDERSTANDING. THIS IS NOT AN ATTEMPT TO VILLIFY LINUS SEBASTIAN OR LMG AS A WHOLE. I ASSUME THERE WAS INTENTION BEHIND THIS THAT ISN'T MALICIOUS, EVEN IF THE PRACTICE IS GENERALLY FROWNED UPON. So I just stumbled over this thread on /r/LinusTechTips: In the thread, we get the following pictures from the latest WAN Show: [Description of the picture: A picture of an LTT backpack with the big orange text next to it saying "Thanks, Anonymous!". Underneath the big orange text the question from a Merch Message reads: "As employers, what is your opinion on employees sharing their salaries? I live in an at-will state, and my boss told me that won't be tolerated because it spreads animosity when people aren't paid the". The message cuts off before the rest of the merch message can show. The picture is time stamped February 17th, 2023, 11:24 PM.] Which gets answered like so: [Description of the picture: The official staff LTT Logo appears on screen where the Merch Message was with a Reply for the previous message. It reads: "Reply @Anonymous! It is frowned upon here, not allowed. The picture is time stamped February 17th, 2023, 11:24 PM.] Now this could have been a joke. Tone is impossible to tell from the text alone. But then OP of that thread also includes the following picture seemingly from the LMG Handbook that they received a copy of. The source of that handbook is, far as I can tell, unconfirmed though perhaps it is accessible somewhere and it was sent their way? I'd love clarification on this. The picture of the handbook in question is this: [Description of the picture: A white page with several different points to it using the LMG Orange color for each title is shown. Each of the titles in sequence are: "34. Wages", "35. Employee Classifications", "36. Seniority", "37. Promotions" and finally "38. Progressive Discipline". The relevant point from the picture that OP of the reddit thread wants to point to is "34. Wages". Underneath the title it reads: "Wages are determined on a case-by-case basis and will be determined at the sole discrection of management. All wages, wage structures including any kind of bonus or commission or other, and wage adjustment information is considered highly confidential. It is not to be shared, discussed, or left in a place that can be seen by co-workers or third parties outside LMG."] What I find jarring here is that even co-workers can't share it with each other. This to me sounds like suppressing information about wages internally. It is well-known that employees knowing what each person earns is often considered empowering the worker and while I don't want to accuse or call a "cancel mob" upon LMG or Linus and Co I do want clarification and understanding of the *why* for this decision. We have already heard Linus' stance on unions and other workers rights issues like it so this is troubling. I understand that legally you can do this according to Canadian law in your area (at least I think so from what I could read, I am not a lawyer). But given that you fight for what is right so often on the WAN Show and in your videos I, and I suspect others, would expect that the same amount of time and effort that goes into things like "Right to Repair" also go into "Worker's Rights". Even if you can't address this today, it would be good to see it talked about on the next WAN Show to understand the justification and keep pushing transparency as LMG seems to agree is the way to go.

So why was this section renamed to Whale LAN? I mean a lot of the threads here are about LTX and not as much Whale LAN (although there is a presence of Whale LAN topics on here)

I was wondering if, and if so how, LMG/LTT contributes to charity? I'm aware of...: That the auctions at LTX was for charity. Folding@Home is for charity. ...however, both of these was money/computer resources coming from their fans, not themselves. LMG was allegedly offered to be purchased and valued at a 9 figure number. Also, Linus has enough money to go around and build tennis centers for people, both LMG as a company and Linus as a person has a lot of money. Controversial opinion that might trigger a lot of people: I personally believe we as humans should try to leave the earth a better place than we found it, and no matter if you make $1000 USD or $10000 USD per month, I strongly believe that donating at least $1 USD per month to charity is a million times better than donating nothing. I'm a student with basically no money or income at all at the moment, but I still make sure to donate $5 USD per month to a local cat shelter, since that's a charity that personally feels important to me. Being open about which charities you donate to is not about boasting or bragging, it's about normalizing it and making it the norm.

So around May (I think) I listened to a WAN Show where Linus had a merch message that asked why LTT (and I think other LMG channels as well) had stopped making YouTube Shorts. Linus replied to the message and said that they just didn't find it profitable enough for the time it took to make a Short. Recently, I've been seeing LTT create YouTube shorts (in fact, they uploaded one yesterday). Does anyone know what changed?

So I generally like to listen to podcasts rather than watch them, so I usually listen to the WAN Show when the VOD becomes available on Spotify. This week I noticed that the audio levels on the VOD are kinda quiet. I was wondering if it's just me or if everyone else is having this problem.

Hi everyone. Something I've noticed over the last year or so is how inconsistent LMG are with their investment disclosures. These disclosures are often short or easily missed, and in ShortCircuit videos (at least the ones I've seen) they aren't mentioned at all! As frequent viewers are aware, Linus invested in Framework 2 years ago and has been posting fairly frequent updates on the main channel. They also committed to disclosing the investment in any videos that cover laptops since Linus has invested in their competition. While they have been disclosing the investment in LTT videos, the disclosure is oftentimes placed towards the end of a video and/or mentioned in passing. In some ShortCircuit videos on laptops, this isn't mentioned AT ALL. In the AliExpress laptop video posted to LTT last week, the investment disclosure was made at 19:30 in a 22 minute video with Linus briefly saying "investment disclosure" in the middle of a run-on sentence about USB and CPU power management. This disclosure would be easy to miss if you're not looking for it and many viewers don't make it 20 minutes into a video. While this may seem incredibly nit-picky for frequent viewers who are already aware of the investment, this does not serve as an adequate disclosure of a potential conflict of interest, especially for newer viewers. What isn't acceptable though is completely missing this disclosure on other channels. The XPS 15 video on the 28th July and the Hyundai laptop video on 5th October do not mention the framework investment at all. The Hyundai video hilariously even includes an MSI sponsorship which mentions "Looking for a laptop for next semester? Well they've got those!". In a video about another company's laptop. While ShortCircuit videos aren't necessarily reviews, they are first impressions that are used as information for purchasing decisions. While it is often another person on-camera, the video is still on a channel owned by LMG and is thus owned by Linus, who has also invested in Framework. Despite it being on a different channel with a different presenter, this still constitutes a conflict of interest and MUST be disclosed. I don't want to attribute to malice something that could easily have been missed, but giving consumers the financial context behind the content they're watching is vitally important on all channels owned by LMG. Content creators on YouTube are already required, by law, to disclose any advertising in their videos in clear and obvious ways. These standards should also be followed for potential conflicts of interest originating from financial investments. It doesn't have to be anything long or overly wordy, but a brief "Hi, I invested into Framework, a competing brand that also manufactures laptops. Do with that information as you wish" at the start of any laptop video would be much better. It's clear, concise, and crucially, at the start of the video. This way it cannot be missed. While I, for the most part, trust LTT to not allow the Framework investment to colour their laptop content or reviews; the disclosure is vital for transparency in an increasingly opaque media landscape. Unfortunately this is a discussion adjacent to conflict of interest in the tech influencer space in general (i.e. reviewing or featuring products from companies that are paying for sponsored ad space, even if the ads are placed on other videos) and has lead to an atmosphere of "trust me bro" in the industry. While I have been able to trust some of these people through their great track-record, limiting conflict of interest is still vitally important. Addressing CoI doesn't mean that the sketchy collusion is happening, but we should want to limit the circumstances where they COULD happen. In turn that will limit the circumstances in which they DO happen. I want to trust LTT, I've been here since the GTX 580 days (damn, it's been 12 years), and I'm aware that there are many other problems that need addressing right now. I don't want to just jump into a dog-pile but making clear and obvious investment disclaimers is a consumer-friendly change that will give people vitally important context into the content they're watching. If I've got anything wrong I'm sure people will let me know and I welcome any corrections. Otherwise I hope this feedback finds the right people

What are some goods alternative sources to get data about the things LTT/LMG covers? For example, I know https://www.rtings.com/ is great for things like laptop, camera, speaker, headphones, keyboard, mouse, monitor and TV reviews. (Also mods please keep this as a separate thread since it's not directly related to the discussion of the controversy).

I'm not sure if this is where I should post this thread but this seems non tech related so I guess Off-Topic is a good place for this. I have wondered for a while if Floatplane Inc. was a subsidiary of Linus Media Group Inc. or if it was a sister company to LMG.

Hey, just jumped on the forum now to spread the word. Sadly I forgot to use the video's direct sponsorlink, could had been the first time I used a sponsored link then lol. This site is actually very cool - I had 68 companies I didn't recognize or didn't want to have my email/data. On top of that it was fun to see my email-history dating back to 2005. So now I know when I made my first online purchase and all that kinds of things. So even if you don't care about privacy (which you should) at least its cool and well-made. Now back to my email....So many email consent reply backs this morning lol.

I was wondering would it make sense for Linus to but bitwit’s channel or employ bitwit under LMG? I feel like it could be a smart investment considering that just the news of Linus buying him would boost his channel and also that Bitwit doesn’t have such a well monetised channel as Linus. If Linus were to employ Bitwit under LMG, he could make him atleast 50% more profitable. Idk maybe this is stupid after all that would be like LTT monopolising the tech space but i still think it’s an interesting topic.

Hi there, I have to write up an essay about the inner workings of Linus Media Group for an essay. So far, I've been able to find most of my questions on the LTT forums, discord and the internet, but a few questions remain unanswered. Q1: How does LMG handle recycling and what are its policies on sustainability? Q2: When it comes to employing new people, does LMG have any policies in place to deal with EEO (Equal Employment Opportunities)? Q3: What sort of union represents the employees of LMG if there is any? Q4: What policies does LMG have in place for WHS (Work Health and Safety) if any? If so, what safety measures / policies have been put in place for employees? Thanks for any answers guys (Btw, yes I have already emailed them using the contact page on the LMG website but never heard back from them)

What are your general thoughts on if LMG creates a cryptocurrency? Pro's and Con's? I think the only use case I could think of off the top of my head was one in which holders could vote (costing a certain number of coins) or submit news ideas (also costing a certain number of coins) for the TechLinked channel on a cyclical basis. Then, whoever's ideas were used gets paid out a portion of the coin pool determined by voting popularity. Further, a portion of the total coin pool goes back to LMG as a fee. This puts less of a reliance on YouTube monetization, sponsors, and other forms of income for LMG, thus allowing them to focus on creating the best content with less focus on the money. Don't get me wrong, they seriously do the best at their sponsorship disclaimers, and transparency with money. Logistically, this could be a nightmare to create and would be unreasonable to even attempt for all I know (which is not that much for the creation of a crypto). But I know I would buy the coin, not for the profits of it, but because of the people behind the coin. I would like to hear y'all's thoughts on this matter (from people who know about this stuff way more then me). Lastly, has this discussion been made before? if so, where? Have a good day!

So my current laptop is a Late 2016 Razer Blade Stealth and I bought it december 2016, ive kept hold of it this whole time for one reason, I got my Dbrand skin signed by Linus, Luke and colton at LTX2017 (wanted to get the rest of the team but couldnt grab them when they were free). Im getting a new Laptop soon as I wanna treat myself to a new one as im finally going to uni and will be getting a DBrand Skin for the new laptop too and would love to get it signed by the team, due to covid the next LTX is a while away. now this is the crazy long shot part, but if i didnt ask i would never know. What would be awesome is if i could ship my order to the LMG office to get it signed by as many members of the LTT, SC, TL, CSF, TQ team as possible and then ship it to its final destination (all costs paid my me) this scenario wouldnt happen untill late summer anyways as also i appreciate alot of the team are working from home. Honestly this is such a long shot if anyone see's this but yea, you dont ask, you dont get

So recently I've been going through the LTT video history on YouTube and just enjoying the old unboxing/build guide videos all over again from the Ivy Lake/Haswell era. I'd absolutely love to see a stripped back, dedicated PC component unboxing and walkthrough channel for any newcomers to the PC game. They're the videos that made me confident enough to build my own PC way back then, and I feel this generation are missing out, because most/all channels gloss over the features and installation of different parts and just palm it off, saying 'but you knew that anyway' - some people don't. Don't know if there's enough of a market for it, but a 2-3 times per week unboxing/back to basics PC building class channel would be well received by me - and I'd watch it even though I know how to build a PC in its current format! Any thoughts anyone?

Summary GamersNexus has been following the news surrounding Linus Media Groups statements on warranty issues, mainly pertaining to the backpack warranty and will now be changing their policy in reporting to keep it in line with how they report on other manufacturers. Quotes Steve seems to nail a couple of points, this "trust me bro" standpoint wouldn't really be accepted if it was another company, I could imagine the response if NZXT were to release a marketing campaign calling their cases "lit" with fire emblems behind pictures of a new case.
