I do simulations in Houdini, and I also do games/Renders in Unreal5. other software I use are, Maya, Arnold, Substance, DaVinci, Zbrush, PS. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I don't have any existing parts, I have peripherals (mouse, keyboard, mic). I have 1 monitor and 1 drawing tablet, both 1080P. I plan on getting 1 more monitor in the future, but not at the moment. I don't need an OS. Why upgrade? I have a Laptop from 2019. it can't handle heavy siming, it crashes a lot when working in UE5, and it bluescreens a lot in UE5. I think I need a more powerful computer now. and I am willing to upgrade. I am In school and I wanted to be able to work from home since I live an hour away from it, and gas is expensive. we do have computers at school that we can use there, so I don't need another laptop. Hello everyone! I am currently putting together a new build that I plan to assemble this autumn, since my current build is 12 years old and well, it is struggling to keep up. I don't know much about computers, but the CPU on the list apparently excels at Houdini, having checked the benchmarks. I am not however at all familiar with motherboards, or RAMs, or power supplies, etc. The components I put on the list in those categories is just stuff I found on the internet, and for example with the motherboard, I feel like it is a bit too expensive? Also, the GPU seems extremely expensive considering it is 2 generations behind? I may be asking some stupid questions, and I do apologize for that, my knowledge of computers is limited. Hi everybody, I'm a artist/student and I'm going to build myself my first rig and I need a bit of help as I've never done it. Budget: 100,000 CZK (roughly 4,000 USD), I'm currently situated in Prague, Czech Republic Purpose: 3D graphics, rendering (mainly GPU, Cycles and Redshift), video editing, (basically a cgi workhorse), possible video streaming (I'm planning to do live classes on CGI) Monitors: I already have one 1920x1080 60Hz display and I might be adding another (probably 1440 one in the future) Why: I'm a freelance 3D artist and I'm upgrading because I'm tired of rendering all my stuff on AWS and other render farms. Got some spare money and I'd like to invest in my work. So far I've been doing all my work on a laptop (Dell Inspiron 15 7559) and even though it's handling most of tasks very well, I can't do more demanding tasks like advanced physical simulations or ray-traced volumetric rendering (technically I can, but it's a pain). Parts: -here's a list of parts I have picked and why I did so, I do need help with some CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3950X - I figured I will benefit a lot from a good single-core performance and this one looks like a great option if I don't exactly need a Threadripper (I think I don't need a Threadripper) GPU: Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti - I have no idea which manufacturer to pick, for starters I will only get one but I'm almost sure I will be turning it into a dual GPU setup later this year RAM: 64 GB - that much I'm sure about since some simulation tasks are RAM heavy, 4x16 or 2x32?, what cl-xx?, what speed? MB: ASUS ROG STRIX X570-E GAMING - will this one be good enough? Will it fit two 2080Ti later? Should I go for EATX? Honestly I have no idea how to pick, apart from the cpu socket. CPU Cooler: NOCTUA NH-D15 SE-AM4 - is this too much or good enough? Any other (better/cheaper) options? PSU: I honestly don't know, did some calculations I think that 1000W should be more than enough (can I go lower?) Storage: I want an ssd, probably M.2 is the best solution (500GB or 1TB) paired with something large but slower like a 4T HDD Case: I honestly don't care, all I need is a good performance/airflow (I do like the looks of Corsair 275R Airflow though) So, those are the parts I think will be best for me. From looking at local prices I think it should fit my budget. But if I can get something better for that price, or cheaper with the same power I'm in. I also want to mention that I am not a fan of RGB lights so... the less it shines, the better. I'll also be buying W10 with it, but I don't need to include that in the budget. Budget (including currency): 5-10k Country: Canada Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: SideFX Houdini, Nuke, Redshift So I am looking into building a new desktop to do some potential freelance (more of a consideration now that everyone is working from home), and some personal testing. The main software package the I use is SideFX Houdini, so that is the main package to build around (I will probably game a bit on it but that is not the focus). OS: Right now my plan in to run linux on the machine since Houdini is much more stable on that than it is on windows (will most likely be running popOS!). I am thinking of building around: AMD Threadripper 3960x Nvidia Quadro RTX 6000 64 gb ram (open to suggestions on brand/speed) So far those are the 3 basic components that I have settled on, Houdini is kind of a hog for every resource on the computer. Houdini has a lot of openCL implementation for running simulations, so that means you need the onboard video memory to be fairly high, and the more cuda cores the better for that. What is the objective: Something a little future proof/can be upgraded - I would like to be able to put in multiple GPUs down the line/or add more ram No Overclocking (it is more about consistency for production work than peaking the performance) Able to hook up to a color accurate monitor (for proper colour display and grading) Air cooling (I am not the biggest fan of water cooling or introducing another fail point to the system) Have a machine that is a monster for production work and can do a bit of gaming on the side What I need advice on: Which motherboard to buy? I don't have any preference in this, but something that can handle multiple GPUs would be nice for expanding down the line Storage, i definitely want a nvme drive for the OS and Apps, and a fast ssd to use for caching things too (brands and suggestions would be great). Cooling I am leaning towards Noctua for fans. Case suggestions, since I want to air cool something with good air flow would be great and being quiet would be nice Power Supply, taking suggestions for this. Monitors: This is something that I also want to upgrade, that can be further down the line though. I would like to replace my 2 12+ year old monitors with something that is HDR compliant and maybe has a decent refresh rate for the odd time I game. Hooking a 3rd small monitor up to the system to use for code would be a bonus.

I am from India and I am a 3d artist, I specialize in shading, rendering and simulation works. I mostly use softwares like Houdini Fx, Autodesk Maya, PF track and Realflow. I have no idea if these softwares use multitreads or not. So, Pleas help me build a workstation best suited for these works. 1) My budget is Rs. 1,50,000, in Indian Currency and I might consider spending another Rs. 50,000, So please consider performance over money. But not over Rs. 2,00,000. 2) As specified earlier I mostly use Houdini Fx, Autodesk Maya, NukeX, Realflow, PF Track and my major concern is 3d works like rendering, shading, video editing and simulation. 3) I would like to purchase a 24" or 23" Monitor, just one monitor now, but I am sure to upgrade it to at-least two monitors later. I would prefer good quality monitors and true color values. 4) I am building a new system from scratch so I will be requiring Keyboards, Mouse, etc., I wont require an OS, so please do not include its cost. And also I don't require any speakers, so please exclude it as well. 5) Please suggest a good UPS because the UPS I currently have sucks, If any rendering or heavy simulation works are going on and I have a power cut, my system immediately shuts down. 6) I would really prefer a good cooling system as I do not have Air Conditioning in my place and India is quite hot almost for the whole year. 7) I would really like atleast a 64 GB RAM supported Motherboard and would also prefer single sticks 16 GB RAMs so that I can give my motherboard full resources.
